BHU team scales 4,650m Mt Moon Peak

Varanasi: A 14-member group from BHU Mountaineering Centre successfully scaled the 4,650m high Mt Moon Peak in Himachal Pradesh. Centre in-charge Prof Anil Kumar Singh said the team was flagged off by BHU registrar Prof Arun Kumar on June 23 and it returned on Friday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Singh said the team, part of Advanced Mountaineering Course-18, included six girls and six boys and were led by instructors Balram Yadav and Shivnarayan Yadav. Balram Yadav said the team reached Laka Glacier via Melodganj and Triund, where they underwent acclimatisation and snow craft training, including climbing, descending and self-rescue techniques. The climb began at 2am on June 28, requiring 19 hours of continuous trekking, a significant challenge that involved crossing Indrahar Pass and several glaciers to reach the summit that stands at an elevation of 15,129 feet above sea level, where the team unfurled the tricolour alongside the university's flag. Sherpa guides Sachin Sharma, Sushil Kumar, Anil and Ashwini Sharma played crucial roles. Local guides said this expedition was special, as such a large team had not climbed Moon Peak before, and it was the first successful ascent of the season after three previous teams returned without summiting. Balram Yadav said the team underwent nearly two months of training for this, and although everyone was fit, four members experienced high-altitude sickness. The team members included former students Anil Yadav and Anupam Agrawal, leader Sakshi Kumari, deputy leader Sachin Kumar, quartermaster Harsh Gupta, Poonam Saini, medical officer Neelam Kumari, information officer Golu Singh, equipment officer Himanshu Singh, luggage officers Shivansh Chaurasia and Ojaswini Sirke, transport officers Abhishek Tomar and Khushi Singh, recreation officer Vibha Kumari, along with instructors Balram Yadav and Shivnarayan Yadav. Dean of students Prof AK Nema congratulated and extended best wishes to the team.
