UT police's crackdown on armed crime: 463 held with 196 pistols, 392 knives since 2022
1 2 Chandigarh: Once celebrated for its serene boulevards and lush greenery, Chandigarh now finds itself grappling with a chilling transformation. Beneath the surface of its peaceful reputation, a surge in armed crime is shaking the city's foundations — and the numbers paint a grim picture. Between Jan 2022 and May 2025, the city's 16 police stations, crime branch units, and operation cells have been locked in a relentless battle against a growing tide of violence. In total, 463 individuals have been arrested under the Arms Act, including 24 operatives linked to notorious gangs such as Lawrence Bishnoi and Goldy Brar's syndicate and the Bambiha gang. The haul? A staggering 196 country-made and sophisticated firearms, 647 live cartridges, and 392 long-handled knives — all recovered from the possession of the anti-social elements. The trend is not just alarming — it's escalating. Arrests under the Arms Act rose from 110 in 2022 to 126 in 2023, and 157 in 2024. In just the first five months of 2025, 70 individuals have already been apprehended with weapons. Street brawls have turned bloody, with dozens of stabbing incidents reported annually. In response, the police have intensified late-night patrols and nakas, intercepting hundreds of suspects armed with knives. One of the most chilling incidents unfolded last year, when the district crime cell, in a joint operation with Punjab Police, nabbed six gang members in Gorakhpur, UP, recovering four pistols and 51 bullets. The accused had allegedly fired shots at a businessman's residence in a VVIP area, demanding Rs 2 crore in extortion — a move orchestrated by gangster Goldy Brar. Another dramatic bust saw three shooters from Lawrence Bishnoi's gang arrested with three pistols and seven bullets, allegedly plotting to assassinate rival gangster Bhupi Rana inside a courtroom, disguised as lawyers. In Dadumajra, three men were caught with two pistols and five cartridges, accused of attempting a hit on a local resident under orders from Anmol Bishnoi, Lawrence's cousin, operating from the US. Despite the grim statistics, there is a silver lining. SSP Kanwardeep Kaur emphasized that constant surveillance and swift action have thwarted multiple assassination plots and gang wars. "Our teams have been vigilant, and their timely interventions have saved lives and preserved peace," she said.

After US arrest, terrorist Passia may soon be sent to India
Happy Passia arrested in California NEW DELHI: Pro-Khalistan terrorist and ISI's key henchman Harpreet Singh, alias Happy Passia, is expected to be extradited from the US to India soon. Passia was held on April 17 in Sacramento, California, by FBI and US Immigration & Customs Enforcement and is lodged at a detention centre in the US. Passia's arrest prompted an appreciation post from agency chief Kash Patel. "Captured: Harpreet Singh, part of an alleged foreign terrorist gang here illegally in the US, who we believe was involved in planning multiple attacks on police stations both in India and the US. @FBISacramento conducted the investigation coordinating with our partners locally as well as in India," Patel had posted on X. Punjab Police have sought his extradition and, sources said, that Indian agencies have received information from their US counterparts that the request for the pro-Khalistan terrorist to be handed over is being processed. With a reward of over Rs 5 lakh on him, Passia is accused of being behind grenade attacks in Punjab, targeting law enforcement installations, sacred sites and residences of well- known figures. According to a dossier, Passia operates on instructions from ISI and banned Khalistani outfit Babbar Khalsa International. More gang violence in Punjab: 9 days after killing of gangster's mother & aide, man shot dead in Amritsar
Amritsar: Nine days after jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's mother and cousin were shot dead in Batala, another killing was carried out on Saturday to avenge the May 26 killing of Bambiha gang member Gora Bariar, adding yet another fatality in a brutal gang war that has ravaged Punjab. This time, assailants shot dead Jugraj Singh 'Tota' (28) in Amritsar's Channenakae village. According to CCTV footage, three unidentified youths arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire on Jugraj at close range, killing him on the spot. The attack was carried out in a public place and in broad daylight. Earlier, it was rumoured that the deceased was the brother of Jagroop Singh alias 'Roopa', who is alleged to be behind the killing of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala. However, police later denied this, saying the rumours were spread due to the false identification of the victim. Amritsar senior superintendent of police (rural) Maninder Singh said an FIR had been registered at Mehta police station. A post was later uploaded on a Facebook ID named after deceased gangster Gopi Ghanshyampur, who belonged to the Bambiha gang, claiming responsibility for the murder. Punjab gangster Bhagwanpuria's mother, cousin killed: Kin refuse to cremate bodies, allege political conspiracy
Gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's family members on Saturday protested at the Batala bypass and blocked the Amritsar-Pathankot national highway by placing the bodies of his mother and cousin on the road, a day after they were shot dead allegedly by a rival gang. The family alleged political motives behind the killings, naming a Member of Parliament and a liquor contractor. The protest was lifted after nearly four hours, only after police assured them of a swift investigation within one week. The bodies will be cremated on Sunday. Police, meanwhile, formed multiple teams to probe the case, and CCTV footage was being scanned to identify and nab the assailants who opened fire on Bhagwanpuria's mother Harjit Kaur (52) and his cousin Karanvir Singh on Thursday night. Harjit Kaur's sister Rajwinder Kaur, sarpanch of Bhagwanpur village, alleged, 'The MP and his son had earlier threatened her family for opposing them in elections and resisting to cooperate in liquor trade activities. My son was threatened multiple times on the road by the MP's son, who warned him not to contest elections or support anyone against them.' Rajwinder Kaur claimed that police protection provided to her son Gagandeep Singh was withdrawn under political pressure. 'Fearing for his life, we sent him abroad,' she said, adding, 'Harjit and Karanvir were identified and targeted after they were seen in Bhagwanpur village.' She alleged, 'The shooters informed their local associates after the killings, saying 'The job is done'.' Police have provided protection to Rajwinder after she lodged a complaint and made public statements. Police officers said that they were examining the allegations and that all individuals named in the complaint would be investigated. Earlier, a social media post claimed that the Bambiha group murdered Harjit and Karanvir. When asked about the claim, police parried the question by saying investigations were underway. However, the Bambiha group denied involvement in the killings in a social media statement, 'Mothers belong to everyone. This was wrong.' No official response has yet been issued by the MP or his family. Harjit, who hails from Bhagwanpur, had been living in Batala in a rented house for the past two to three years. The bike-borne assailants fired upon their car on the Qadian Road in Punjab's Batala, in which Karanvir was declared dead at the Batala Civil Hospital, while Harjit Kaur was referred to a hospital in Amritsar. She later succumbed to the bullet injuries. In March, jailed gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria was detained by the Narcotics Control Bureau under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act and shifted from the central jail in Bathinda to Assam's Silchar jail. Bhagwanpuria was already in the custody of the Punjab Police in the 2022 singer Sidhu Moosewala murder case.

Jailed gangster Kaushal claims revenge hit on rival's mother in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: Gangster Kaushal Chaudhary, currently lodged in Bhondsi jail, has claimed responsibility for the murder of rival gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's mother in Punjab's Batala. The attack, which occurred on Thursday night, also claimed the life of a key aide of Bhagwanpuria who handled operations for his gang. Harjit Kaur, Bhagwanpuria's mother, and Karanvir, son of an assistant sub-inspector, were returning from a court hearing in Tarn Taran when unidentified assailants on motorcycles pumped bullets into them near their house. While Karanvir died on the spot, Kaur succumbed to multiple bullet injuries in hospital. Shortly after the attack, a post surfaced on social media, where Haryana-based gangsters Prabhu Dasuwal and Kaushal — associated with the Bambiha gang — claimed responsibility for the killings. The post targeted Karanvir specifically, alleging he managed operations for Bhagwanpuria, such as handling fugitives, weapons, and funds. Police said they were yet to ascertain the veracity of the message. Kaushal (40) is no stranger to crime. With 46 criminal cases against him across Haryana and Punjab, including nine murders in Gurgaon alone, he was extradited from Dubai in 2019. Despite his incarceration, he continues to operate his criminal network from behind the bars, according to police sources. In 2018, an FIR was registered at Delhi's Rohini police station against Kaushal under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act. Thursday's attack, police said, appears to be a retaliation for the recent murder of Gurpreet alias Gora Bariari, an A-category gangster from the Gopi Ghanshampuria gang who was killed outside a petrol pump in Gurdaspur on May 26. The Bhagwanpuria gang was suspected to be behind that attack. The latest attack has once again brought to the fore the complex web of gang rivalries in the region. The rivalry between the Bishnoi and Bambiha gangs, as well as Kaushal's faction, has escalated over time. Once considered close allies, Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria became adversaries following a clash at Tarn Taran jail in Feb 2023. Bhagwanpuria was subsequently moved to a prison in Assam, while Bishnoi was shifted to a Gujarat jail. In 2022, the Bishnoi and Kaushal gangs fought over control of the lucrative liquor trade in Gurgaon, leading to shootings intended at avenging earlier killings of each other's associates. Additionally, Kaushal was named in the murder of Youth Akali Dal leader Vicky Middukhera in Mohali in Aug 2021. The Bishnoi gang later avenged Middukhera's killing by shooting Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala dead. Kaushal was also accused of masterminding the 2022 murder of international kabaddi player Sandeep Singh Nangal Ambian. Police said investigations were underway to trace the network that sustained these gangs, focusing on how members coordinated from behind the bars. "We have intensified efforts to address issues such as firearms inside jails and retaliatory strikes," an official said.
