Classic Gundam's Design Fixed In New ‘GQuuuuuuX' Toy
The upcoming Metal Robot Damashii toy of the classic Gundam from 'GQuuuuuuX'. In the final episode of Gundam GQuuuuuuX, the original RX-78-2 Gundam appears, and its latest toy has a lot more to it than it first appears. To back up quite a bit, the original design of the classic Gundam by Kunio Okawara is surprisingly curvaceous, and that has always caused issues when it gets translated into model kit or toy form. Back in 1999, Bandai did a solid stab at getting the original Gundam 'right' with their Kado Senshi chogokin release. I have it, and for its time, it's very nicely done. More recently, though, the design has been forcibly modernized for model kits and especially toys. The latter being an issue with the Robot Damashii spin-off series Ver. ANIME. The point of these Ver. ANIME toys were to accurately replicate mecha designs from the various host anime, and all of them were wonderfully done. All except one. The classic Gundam still had a modernized sculpt and proportions, which naturally irritated the fans in Japan. Every toy variant of the classic Gundam in this Ver. ANIME toyline had the same issue, and most had given up on ever getting a proper version of the design. Following the other Metal Robot Damashii releases from GQuuuuuuX, which feature die-cast in their construction, the original Gundam has been added to that lineup. While we only get a beam saber and shield with this release, so no beam rifle or hyper bazooka, the fact that this toy finally fixes this issue of being faithful to Okawara's design is definitely welcomed. Pre-orders start today in Japan via Premium Bandai, and the price tag is also pretty decent. Coming in at 16,500 yen (or around $114 at the current exchange rate), you will also likely be able to use the hands and weapons from prior Robot Damashii releases to get the full load-out. Gundam GQuuuuuuX is now streaming worldwide via Amazon Prime Video. Follow me on X, Facebook and YouTube. I also manage Mecha Damashii and am currently featured in the Giant Robots exhibition currently touring Japan.

We're Entering a Golden Age of Marvel Fighting Game Figures
A few weeks ago, Hasbro revealed it was cooking up a massive tribute to the legacy of Capcom's Marvel fighting games, from Children of the Atom all the way through to the legendary Marvel vs. Capcom franchise, with a series of Marvel Legends figures replicating aesthetics and matchups from across some of the most iconic fighting games ever made. But would it be a fighting game without a shock new challenger entering the ring? Last night Bandai confirmed that it would be kicking off its own 'Gamerverse' line of figures in the S.H. Figuarts range, likewise inspired by the classic Capcom Marvel games, starting with a downright glorious Cyclops that's due out this November for ¥9,900 (or around $68). Heavily inspired by the aesthetic of Bengus' artwork for the likes of Marvel vs. Capcom and X-Men vs. Street Fighter (itself drawing inspiration from Cyclops' then-current Jim Lee suit from the '90s refresh of the X-Men comics), the figure is more than just Bandai's first crack at comics-inspired X-Men figures (the Figuarts line has had a few mutant entries via movie adaptations, most notably Deadpool and Wolverine via their appearances in Deadpool & Wolverine). It's a celebration of Cyclops specifically as he appeared in those classic fighting games. View this post on InstagramIt's very cool to see the SHF Cyclops hitting all the poses you'd want him to hit from those early games, from his legendarily sassy Optic Blast pose, to hitting a Gene Splice uppercut, to, of course, using a set of back sheets to replicate his massive Mega Optic Blast hyper combo. He can even do his little x-hand pose before he fires, to boot! But what's most interesting about this wave of merchandising nostalgia for the early Marvel/Capcom games—off of the back of the re-release of several of the classic games in the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection last year—is that they're now all dropping right as Marvel's fighting game legacy prepares to move away from Capcom itself. The start of this month saw Sony make a surprise reveal of Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, a new tag-team fighter in the vein of those classic Capcom titles, but made by Guilty Gear's Arc Systems Works. It was the first major Marvel fighting game not developed by Capcom in years, and came in the wake of the disappointing release of Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite back in 2017. The MvC series had spent nearly a decade wash with disappointment for the latest title, while also patting itself on the back for the legacy that had come before it. Now, on the video game front, that legacy is preparing to go elsewhere. But on your toy shelf, at least, it's staying firmly put in Capcom's court. Want more io9 news? Build-a-Gunpla. This September, Bandai will open a Gundam museum in Japan, where you can not only watch staff members manufacture Gunpla kits inside its factory, but also create a plastic mini mech of your own, as spotted by IGN. You'll get to design the concept of your model, pick a color scheme, create plastic runners to house the individual parts, and even make the packaging. Time to buy a plane ticket to Japan!
