Audi Partners with Dolby to Bring Next-Gen In-Car Audio to Select Models

Audi announced today their new partnership with Dolby to bring Dolby Atmos to the Audi Q7, Q8, A8, and e-tron GT starting July 2025. According to the two companies' press release, 93% of Billboard's 2024 Top 100 Artists are releasing music in Dolby Atmos, so if you're a subscriber of the aforementioned streaming services, you'll have plenty to listen to. My only gripe is the focus on platforms like Amazon Music and Tidal rather than more commonly used ones like Apple Music and Spotify. I understand that both Amazon Music and Tidal use lossless codecs for songs that Spotify has yet to offer, but for me, this severely limits my music choices. Hopefully, if enough automakers omit Spotify integration from their high-tech in-car audio systems, the streaming service will get its act together and finally offer lossless codecs on its platform as well. New Audi models are getting a major Dolby sound upgrade
If you're considering buying a new Audi you will want to read this, as there's a major sound upgrade coming to a number of the auto maker's models. From July 2025, new Audi Q7, Q8, A8 and e-tron GT EV models will come with Dolby Atmos support. This immersive surround sound experience has been common place in movie theaters and home hi-fi systems for years, but it also appears in a number of cars. Recommended Videos While it's not the first firm to introduce this tech, it's a boost for future owners looking for a premium sound experience on the move. Audi joins a long line of manufacturers who have Dolby Atmos in select vehicles, including Cadillac, Mercedes‑Benz, Porsche, Rivian, Smart and Volvo. While surround sound has existed in cars for some time, Atmos dials things up a notch by not only surrounding you with speakers front and back, left and right, but by also delivering sound from above, to create a cocoon of audio. One of its majors use cases is creating a more immersive experience when watching movies, but this isn't an option in Audi's vehicles. Instead the Bang & Olufsen Premium 3D Sound System, which has been specially adapted to integrate Dolby Atmos Music, will provide you with premium music playback. You'll be able to listen to Atmos tracks via the Amazon Music, Audible and Tidal streaming services, with the ability to download their apps directly on Audi's infotainment system for easy access. Premium sound for premium models While this is a welcome addition to Audi's in-car entertainment setup, Atmos for now is only available in the firm's most expensive vehicles. You'll need to make sure you have the Bang & Olufsen Premium sound system with 3D option selected, which isn't included in the base-level trims of the Q7, Q8 and A8. That means Audi's two best selling cars in the US during 2024 – the Q5 and Q3 SUVs – are not getting the Atmos upgrade. At least, not for now. Audi could look to bring Dolby Atmos to more models in the future – although we've had no word on whether this is being considered – so for now you'll have to make do with the top-spec options.

Dolby Atmos Sound Coming To Audi Cars From July
With recent research from the Federal Highway Administration revealing that more and more of us are spending longer and longer in our cars, Dolby seems to be on a mission to make the estimated three trillion miles a year Americans collectively spend on the road more enjoyable. The audio brand has already introduced its Dolby Atmos surround sound system to a range of different cars from brands including Mercedes, Cadillac, Lucid and Lotus (see the links at the end of this article), and now it's adding another big name to its Dolby Atmos car 'fleet': Audi. Dolby Atmos sound is coming to multiple Audi car models from July. No less than four different models from Audi's current car range are going to start being delivered with Dolby Atmos support built in from July 2025: The Q7s, Q8s, A8s and e-tron GTs. To make Dolby Atmos work in these ranges, Audi has had to introduce two significant innovations to their already impressive sound systems. First, the cars' integrated Bang & Olufsen Premium 3D Sound Systems have been specially adapted to handle Dolby's premium surround sound format. Second, Audi has provided access to multiple sources of Dolby Atmos audio content, including Amazon Music, Audible and Tidal, via apps integrated into the cars' multimedia interface and available via the Audi Application Store. Tracks can be selected for playback via this system by either the driver or front passenger. If you're not familiar with the benefits of Dolby Atmos sound, it's a so-called 'object based' sound system designed to create a three-dimensional sound stage that wraps right around the listener, including over their head. Sound effects and musical layers and elements are then placed within and steered around this three-dimensional space, rather than sounds just appearing to come from the position of the speakers as happens with traditional speaker systems. Or to put it in Dolby's own terms: 'Dolby Atmos allows artists to fully realize their creative vision, bringing the listener inside the music. Dolby Atmos creates a deeper connection between artists and their fans, transcending ordinary listening experiences by immersing listeners in their favourite songs and revealing every detail with unparalleled clarity and depth.' Artists really seem to be embracing the Dolby Atmos format now, too. In fact, no less than 93% of Billboard's 2024 Top 100 Artists released music mastered for the Dolby Atmos format, and both new Dolby Atmos releases and old track remasters have continued to become available across all the Atmos-enabled sound streaming networks throughout 2025 to date.
