India trying to facilitate safe and early return of 34 Indian fishermen detained by Bangladesh
New Delhi, July 18 (UNI) India is trying to facilitate the safe and early return of 34 Indian fishermen who were taken into custody by the Bangladesh navy for allegedly fishing in Bangladeshi territorial waters earlier this week. According to sources, on the intervening night of July 14-15, 34 Indian fishermen along with two of their Indian fishing trawlers, FB Jhor and FB MaMangalChandi, were apprehended by Bangladesh authorities near Mongla, for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in Bangladeshi territorial waters. As soon as information about the incident was received, the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh took up the matter with Bangladeshi authorities through diplomatic channels seeking immediate consular access. 'We are constantly pursuing the matter for facilitating the safe and early return of all the fishermen along with their boats,' the sources added. The vessels, FB Jhor and FB Mangal Chandi-38, were intercepted near the Fairway Buoy area in the deep sea late on Monday. Several species of sea fish were recovered from the trawlers, according to Bangladeshi reports. The 34 men from Kakdwip in West Bengal were produced before a Bangladeshi court, following their detention by the Bangladesh Navy. The West Bengal state government had reached out to the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh, requesting diplomatic intervention for the release of the detained fishermen. UNI RN

The vessels were intercepted late yesterday near the Fairway Buoy area in the deep sea and the detained fishermen were then taken to Mongla, Daily Star reported Tuesday. The West Bengal state government is also coordinating with Indian diplomats in Bangladesh in an effort to expedite the release. The arrest underscores ongoing tensions along the maritime boundary between India and Bangladesh, where fishermen on both sides frequently navigate contested or poorly demarcated waters. This is not an isolated incident. In October 2024, 95 Indian fishermen and six trawlers were detained by Bangladeshi authorities and were released only after serving nearly three months in prison. 24 hours on, fate of 34 detained Indian fishermen in Bangladesh uncertain
Over 24 hours after they were detained by the Bangladesh Navy, 34 Indian fishermen from Kakdwip in South 24-Parganas have still not been released. The fishermen were allegedly apprehended late Monday night for crossing into Bangladeshi waters while fishing in the Bay of Bengal. Two trawlers, FB Jhar and FB Mangalchandi, were seized during the operation. The fishermen were reportedly taken to Mongla Port by Bangladesh authorities. 'The arrested fishermen and their seized trawlers have been taken to Mongla Port. The fishermen likely crossed the maritime border accidentally due to adverse weather conditions,' said a source from West Bengal's Kakdwip. A Bangladeshi patrol ship is believed to have intercepted the trawlers before escorting them to port. Top officials of the state administration are in touch with the Indian Embassy in Dhaka to facilitate the early release of the detained fishermen. 'This is an international matter, and in past incidents, our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has personally intervened to ensure the safe return of fishermen detained in Bangladesh. There will be no exception this time, and I urge the families not to worry,' said Manturam Pakhira, MLA from Kakdwip. Satinath Patra of the Sundarbans Maritime Fishermen Workers Union called for a broader resolution to such recurring incidents. 'This isn't new. Just as our trawlers have inadvertently crossed into their waters, theirs have entered ours,' he said. 'Previously, these situations were resolved with less tension.' 1 2 3 Kolkata: Thirty-four fishermen from Kakdwip in two fishing trawlers were allegedly detained by the Bangladesh Navy in the early hours of Monday for allegedly crossing into Bangladeshi waters while fishing in the Bay of Bengal. According to sources, the two trawlers — FV Jhor and FV Mangalchandi — were intercepted about 77 nautical miles from the Fairway Buoy of Mongla Port in Bangladesh. Bangladesh media reported that a Bangladesh Navy patrol vessel spotted the trawlers fishing within their exclusive economic zone and detained the crew along with the boats and fishing equipment. The fishermen are being held in Mongla, where legal proceedings have begun under Bangladesh's fisheries and maritime departments. "They may have accidentally crossed the boundary due to natural calamity. I have asked fishermen's organisations for detailed information," said Kakdwip MLA Monturam Pakhira. Kolkata: As many as 34 fishermen, mostly hailing from the coastal belt of Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, have been detained by the Bangladesh administration after their fishing trawlers allegedly crossed the international waters and entered the neighbouring country's coastline. As per information communicated to the West Bengal government, the incident took place late on the night of July 13, and the matter was communicated to the Indian and the West Bengal administration officially by the Bangladesh government on Tuesday morning. Because of darkness coupled with bad weather conditions, two fishing trawlers, namely 'FB-Jhar' and 'FB-Mangalchandi, lost direction and inadvertently crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line and entered the Bangladesh waters, said a state government official. After that, the 34 fishermen were detained by the Bangladesh Navy along with the two fishing trawlers. As per the latest information available with the state administration, the 34 fishermen along with the two fishing trawlers were nabbed at a distance of 77 nautical miles from Bangladesh's Mongla Port Fairway Buoy. An office-bearer of the Sundarban Deep-sea Fishermen Workers' Union said that, as far as the last information available to them, although being detained, the 34 fishermen were not facing any difficulty there. 'The state administration has already started the process of ensuring the return of the detained fishermen to the state,' the union representative said. 'In the changed political situation in Bangladesh, both the administration as well as our union had been regularly cautioning the fishermen going for deep-sea fishing to be extremely cautious with regards to remaining within the Indian water. But still, mistakes happen at times either because of the darkness or because of the bad weather, as it happened in this case,' the union representative said. Meanwhile, an official from the state fisheries department said that the office of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka has also been contacted, and the latter had requested to initiate talks with the Bangladeshi administration immediately to ensure the return of the detained fishermen.
