Published on: Saturday, July 12, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 12, 2025 By: Jo Ann Mool Text Size: The charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code carries a punishment of one to five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, on conviction. Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed man, who was recently jailed 12 months for assaulting his elder sister, was on Friday sentenced to another 14 months in jail and fined RM2,000, or two months jail by the Magistrate's Court for smashing the windscreen of his sister's car. Ridzuan Roslan, 29, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to committing mischief by smashing a helmet onto the front windscreen of a car belonging to his sister, Normala Roslan, 48, which caused RM550 in damages. The incident took place on April 27, this year, at 1pm, at the parking area of Cyber City Apartment in Penampang. The charge under Section 427 of the Penal Code carries a punishment of one to five years' imprisonment, a fine, or both, on conviction. The prosecution informed the court that a dispute between the siblings began when Normala told Ridzuan, her younger brother, to stop shouting inside the house. Ridzuan reacted aggressively by punching the victim on the right side of her head, choking her, and slamming her left arm against a metal grille door, said the prosecution, adding that the victim sustained bruises and injuries as a result of the attack. Ridzuan then ran outside to smash her red Proton Saga using a blue helmet, shattering its front windscreen. Dzul ordered Ridzuan to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest. On July 1, Ridzuan was sentenced to 12 months in jail by a Magistrate Court for assaulting Normala. Meanwhile, a 21-year-old woman was fined RM100 or three days in jail for having RM6,599 in her bank account that she could not explain. Noor Cahaya Yusuf pleaded guilty to having the money, dishonestly obtained from the account owner, Mohd Khairil Ikhwan Abdul Rahman, for which she failed to provide a reasonable explanation as to how she had obtained the money on March 31, 2024, here. She was charged under Section 22A(1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance (Chapter 80) of Sabah, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM100, a jail term of up to three months, or both. According to the prosecution, the victim had seen an advertisement for gold rings on Telegram and agreed to purchase two pieces. He made six separate transfers totalling RM6,599 into a Bank Simpanan Nasional account under Noor Cahaya's name for the purchase and delivery. However, the jewellery was never delivered, and he was later asked to make additional payments. Feeling cheated, he lodged a police report. Inspectors Mohamad Hamidi Mohamad Hamzah and Yusdi Basri prosecuted. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? High MyKad usage for Sara programme in Sabah

BELURAN: Sabah has shown a high rate of MyKad usage for the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) programme, with 94% of recipients making purchases on registered premises. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying said there are 506,000 Sara recipients with RM500mil approved annually. 'Currently, there are almost 4,000 registered grocery shops and supermarkets in the country compared to 700 in 2024. 'In Sabah alone, there are over 430 registered premises, and this number will increase to ensure better access in all areas,' she stated in a press release yesterday. She also said that the government is enhancing the range of basic necessities permitted in the programme by expanding the current 14 categories to include household items such as soap, detergent, and floor cleaners, effective May 1. On her working visit to Beluran with Finance Ministry officers, Lim said it was part of their commitment. 'The main focus of the visit is to check out the implementation of the Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) in addition to Sara and to directly interact with recipients, as the programme allows the government the opportunity to assess the effectiveness of the aid and to obtain feedback from recipients, especially from the interior of Sabah. 'In Malaysia, there are 566,000 STR recipients without bank accounts; in Sabah, 62,000 out of 830,000 STR recipients do not have bank accounts. 'Today (Monday), almost 400 recipients in Beluran without bank accounts showed up for the STR cash payment programme,' she added, Bernama reported. Lim also shared that RM410mil has been channelled for Phase One and Two of STR payments in Sabah, with two more STR payments to be made in August and November. 'As such, a mobile Bank Simpanan Nasional branch has been initiated to offer banking services, including deposits, withdrawals and financial advice, to rural residents in Beluran at their doorstep.'

High MyKad usage for SARA programme in Sabah, says deputy minister

BELURAN: Sabah has recorded a high adoption rate of MyKad for the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) programme, with 94 per cent of recipients using it to purchase essentials at registered outlets. Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying revealed that 506,000 individuals receive SARA aid, with RM500 million approved annually. Currently, nearly 4,000 grocery stores and supermarkets nationwide are registered under the programme, a significant increase from 700 in 2024. Sabah alone has over 430 participating outlets, with plans to expand further for better accessibility. Lim noted that the government has broadened the range of eligible items under SARA, adding domestic cleaning products like soap, detergent, and floor cleaners from May 1. She made these remarks during a working visit to Beluran with Finance Ministry officials. The visit aimed to monitor the implementation of Rahmah Cash Aid (STR) and SARA while engaging directly with beneficiaries. 'This allows us to evaluate the aid's effectiveness and gather feedback, especially from rural Sabah,' she said. In Malaysia, 566,000 STR recipients lack bank accounts, with 62,000 in Sabah alone. During the visit, nearly 400 unbanked Beluran residents received STR cash payments. Lim also shared that RM410 million has been disbursed for STR Phases 1 and 2 in Sabah, with two more payments scheduled for August and November. To assist rural communities, Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) deployed a Mobile Bank Branch, offering deposits, withdrawals, and financial advice. 'This service eases access to banking for Beluran's rural population,' she added.

No more 80km trips: New ATM eases banking woes for Lojing's Orang Asli community

GUA MUSANG: More than 3,000 Orang Asli residents from several settlements in the Lojing Highlands no longer need to travel approximately 80km to access an automated teller machine (ATM), following the installation of the facility at the Lojing Highlands Rest and Service (R&R) area yesterday. A resident, Sani Alang, 45, said they previously had to travel to Gua Musang town at least once a month just to withdraw cash from an ATM. He said the new ATM service had brought great relief to the community, easing the long-standing hardship of having to make long trips for basic banking transactions. "Previously, I had to spend almost RM50 on fuel and travel around 80km to town just to withdraw money. Now, not anymore," he said. "However, we hope that a cash deposit machine (CDM) can also be made available in the future for the convenience of residents." Meanwhile, Galas assemblyman Mohd Syahbuddin Hashim said the facility benefits not only the Orang Asli community in Lojing but also tourists and road users travelling between Gua Musang, Lojing, and Cameron Highlands in Pahang. He said this was the first ATM installed in the Lojing sub-district. "This long-awaited Bank Simpanan Nasional (BSN) ATM has finally been installed and is now operational at the Lojing R&R. "We are grateful to BSN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Awang Adek Hussin for the approval, and to the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister's Department for funding the building through the Galas assemblyman's service centre," he said. "We have opened access and provided the necessary facilities for the people in remote areas," he added.
