Katseye Cat-Fight Over Jessica Alba's ‘Gabriela' in Telenovela-Inspired Video
The girls of Katseye are leaning into the fake drama fans often pit them in for their new 'Gabriela' music video. On Friday, the six-piece group released the visual for their new single, which sees them fiercely competing to become the successor to a company CEO, played by Jessica Alba. 'It was the most fun we've ever had shooting a music video. We might all have scars from the fighting scenes, but it was so worth it,' Manon tells Rolling Stone. 'We were able to fully step into a new character and not be ourselves and just play on this little narrative that some people have of us, that we all hate each other. It was fun to make fun of that a little bit.' More from Rolling Stone Kesha Gets Wild and NSFW in Outrageous 'Boy Crazy' Video The Weeknd Is Stuck in Purgatory in 'Baptized in Fear' Video Feid and Tony Hawk Play PS2 and Share Cereal in Nostalgic 'Ando XXIL' Video 'We were rehearsing those fighting scenes. We didn't even have to, but every day, in the middle of rehearsal, we would be like, 'Megan, come over here, I'm going to punch you,'' adds Sophia. 'We couldn't stop laughing.' 'We're fighting for our lives to not laugh,' continues Lara. The video follows the members of Katseye as chaos unfolds, as the girls fight over who should become the next CEO of Alba's company. 'We were like, 'Wow, we're such good actresses.' And then Jessica Alba came in and this is a real actress,' says Sophia. 'This is her life, and when she came in, we were like, 'Shit, we all suck. That's acting.' We were all like, 'Period!'' After battling for the CEO position, the video spirals into a fever-dream-like sequence, with the group members fighting over a mannequin, throwing vases and food at each other in true telenovela fashion. 'I feel like the song is about paying homage to telenovelas and Latin culture and for me, it's honestly such a big opportunity,' says Daniela, who's Cuban, and sings the song's chorus en español. 'I feel very honored to be able to sing in my native language and just connect with our Latino fans and that community a little bit more.' The video for 'Gabriela' comes a week before the group — comprising Lara, Sophia, Manon, Daniela, Yoonchae, and Megan — is set to release their sophomore EP, Beautiful Chaos, next Friday. Sly & the Family Stone's Earliest Known Live Recordings to Be Issued on New Album
Close to 60 years since they were committed to tape, the earliest known live recordings of Sly & the Family Stone will be released this year. Dubbed The First Family: Live at the Winchester Cathedral 1967, the collection of unearthed live cuts will be issued on July 18 via High Moon. More from Billboard The Weeknd Wanders Through Purgatory in 'Baptized in Fear' Music Video Miley Cyrus Says Madonna 'Was Down' to Mud Wrestle in a '4x4' Music Video, But Her Label Said No Belinda's 'Indómita' Album & More Best New Music Latin They'll be available as digital, vinyl and CD editions, with physical copies being issued with a booklet featuring never-before-seen photos, interviews with Sly Stone and original band members, and liner notes from producer Alex Palao. The CD edition will also feature their cover of Otis Redding's 'Try A Little Tenderness' as an exclusive bonus track. Recorded on March 26, 1967, the live set sees the influential group performing as part of their four-month residency at the Winchester Cathedral club in Redwood City, California. Recorded by first manager Rich Romanello, the tapes were soon shelved, but later rediscovered in 2002 by Dutch twins and band archivists Edwin and Arno Konings. 'The Winchester Cathedral recordings showcase a one-of-kind outfit that was already at the peak of its powers, long before it became internationally famous,' said Palao in a statement. 'Sly is fully in command, while the unique arrangements and tighter-than-tight ensemble playing point clearly to the road ahead, and the enduring influence of Sly & the Family Stone's music.' Alongside the announcement of the package, a preview of the record has been released by way of final track, 'I Gotta Go Now (Up On The Floor)/Funky Broadway.' Despite being recorded in March 1967, the live set features no tracks which would appear on their debut album – A Whole New Thing – when it arrived in October of that year. Largely comprising cover songs, only the opening track, 'I Ain't Got Nobody (For Real),' would be issued on one of the band's albums, appearing on Dance to the Music in 1968. Sly & the Family Stone would release a total of ten albums across their 19-year career, with the band coming to an end in 1983, and later being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. Stone would release a solo album in 1975, with his most recent full-length release being 2011's I'm Back! Family & Friends. Earlier this year, Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson directed the film Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius), which provided a deeper look into the life and legacy of its titular musical mastermind. 'I wanted to investigate and interrogate the idea of Black genius. How is it different from the idea of genius in general? What is the effect of being saddled with that label? How much promise is built into it, how much fear and how much unreasonable expectation?' Questlove said in a statement. 'Sly wanted to take you higher — I hope that this film also takes you deeper.' Eric Church Defends Bruce Springsteen After President Trump Remarks, Says Political Parties Are ‘Total Bulls–t'
When Bruce Springsteen put the Donald Trump administration on blast at a concert in Manchester a few weeks ago, Eric Church was in the crowd. And in a new interview, the country star shared what he really thought of the moment that sparked a social media rampage led by the president against one of the country star's musical heroes. Speaking to Rolling Stone in an open-ended interview published Friday (June 6), Church made it clear that he thinks Springsteen — who made headlines for calling the White House 'corrupt, incompetent and treasonous' at his kickoff Land of Hope & Dreams Tour show in May — has the right 'to say and do what he wants.' More from Billboard Bruce Springsteen Drops 'Land of Hope & Dreams' EP Featuring Speech That Set Off President Trump The Weeknd Wanders Through Purgatory in 'Baptized in Fear' Music Video Miley Cyrus Says Madonna 'Was Down' to Mud Wrestle in a '4x4' Music Video, But Her Label Said No 'I respect the hell out of somebody having the balls to do something like that,' he told the publication. 'If you're Bruce Springsteen, at 75 years old, if that's what floats your boat, then you should do that. I was just ready to hear 'Chimes of Freedom.'' Regardless of whether you agree with Springsteen's comments, Church — who in 2011 paid tribute to the New Jersey rocker on Billboard Hot 100 No. 19 hit 'Springsteen' — added that he thinks the passion behind the moment only elevated the show itself. 'You could tell he wanted to get something off his chest,' said the 'Heart on Fire' artist. 'It added a little more, whatever that was … angst … and the show was fantastic. Best Springsteen show I've seen.' The topic of the E Street bandleader's viral speech came up as Church was discussing his thoughts on America's political landscape, which has been more fraught than ever since Trump returned to office in January. Following the Manchester show, the twice-impeached POTUS ranted on Truth Social that Springsteen was 'highly overrated,' 'dumb as a rock' and a 'dried out 'prune' of a rocker,' later lobbing long-debunked accusations that the 'Born in the U.S.A.' musician had participated in an 'illegal election scam' for Kamala Harris. Meanwhile, Americans' satisfaction with the economy under Trump has been dropping, while many people have been calling out the president's administration for working to slash funding for programs supporting reproductive healthcare, LGBTQ rights and more. But as the divide between Democrats and Republicans deepens, Church told Rolling Stone that he thinks pledging unconditional allegiance to any one political party is 'total bulls–t.' 'I have a problem with the political system where I believe things on both sides, but if I have to pick a party, it means that I can't believe some of those things,' he told the publication. 'If I'm a Republican or I'm a Democrat, I have to be all Republican or all Democrat, and there's no way those guys and girls believe that. There's no f–king way.' Even so, Church doesn't want to label himself as an 'independent. 'It sounds like I can't make up my mind,' he said. 'I bristle at that. But if you look at how broad these issues and topics are, I think there's a small percentage of Americans that truly believe in 100 percent of a party's platform. Most Americans go back and forth. I change my mind all the damn time.' The interview comes about a month after the release of Church's new album, Evangeline vs. the Machine, which debuted at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 in May. The North Carolina native also recently appeared on Morgan Wallen's chart-topping new album, I'm the Problem, guesting on the song 'Number 3 and Number 7,' which entered at No. 52 on the Hot 100 and No. 27 on the Hot Country Songs chart. Mariah Carey isn't playing it safe on new single 'Type Dangerous,' which ushered in a new musical era for the vocalist Thursday (June 5). Featuring the superstar singing over a swaggering, percussion-heavy beat, the track showcases Mimi channeling her sultriest, most confident self. 'Looking for the dangerous type,' she croons. In that same clip, the camera panned down to show that the vehicle's license plate displayed the characters, 'MC16' — leading fans to conclude that the Songbird Supreme also has a new album on the way. 'Type Dangerous' serves as Carey's first proper single in years, with the five-time Grammy winner last dropping an album, Caution, in 2018. The project — which marked the 15th album in her discography — reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200. Carey has since busied herself with her annual 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' promotional cycles, as well as celebrating the anniversaries of her most iconic albums. Most recently, she commemorated The Emancipation of Mimi turning 20 years old by dropping an expansive two-disc set compiling numerous remixes, bonus tracks, radio mixes and a cappella cuts. (Billboard also celebrated the milestone by ranking all 18 of the album's original tracks.) Listen to Carey's new song 'Type Dangerous' below.
