NCP (SP) MLA bats for smooth traffic on Nagar & Alandi roads

Pune: In the ongoing monsoon session of the assembly on Thursday, NCP (SP) MLA of Wadgaon Sheri Bapu Pathare raised the issue of traffic congestion on Nagar Road and Alandi Road, while demanding removal of BRTS and demolition of the dedicated lane on Alandi Road to ease vehicular movement. In the question hour session, the MLA raised the issue of traffic snarls, particularly on Nagar Road, during peak hours. "The area is close to the airport. Commuters face daily hardships because of traffic congestion, which worsens because of diversions whenever there is VIP movement. There is urgent need for the state govt to intervene and resolve the issue," he said. In Aug 2024, Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had sanctioned Rs97 crore to construct an underpass and flyover on Nagar Road. Pathare said, "There has been no progress on ground. I urge the govt to direct PMC to expedite the process." He cited the example of Nagar Road, where the BRTS lane was removed to provide more space for smooth vehicle movement. "The BRTS project in Pune is defunct and the civic administration has cleared all corridors, except the one on Alandi Road. There is no point keeping it. The state govt should instruct PMC to clear the road like they dismantled the BRTS lanes on Nagar Road," Pathare said in the assembly.

Traffic congestion, infra issues on Pune's Nagar Road prompt MLA to demand action from PMC, police

Pune: Residents of Nagar Road have cited rising distress due to unabated traffic congestion, poor road conditions, inadequate infrastructure, and unsafe pedestrian pathways. To address these issues urgently, Wadgaonsheri constituency MLA Bapu Pathare has submitted a memorandum to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), traffic police department and other administrators for urgent action. Recently, a signal-free plan was implemented in areas including Yerawada, Shastrinagar, Kalyaninagar, Ramwadi, Vimannagar, Tata Garden, Kharadi Bypass, Janak Baba Dargah, Yuvan IT Park, and Kharadi Check Post. Although the speed and flow of traffic has increased in the aftermath, many safety measures are still pending. Against this backdrop, the MLA proposed several measures in his missive. Some of the key measures suggested to the authorities include repositioning the disrupted divider after BRTS corridor removal in the area to the centre of the stretch. Further, citizens are demanding installation of zebra crossings, footpaths, pedestrian signals and reflective boards at the start of medians, besides directional and road guide signboards to major areas. Another demand is smart signal systems for traffic control. Additionally, in another memorandum, Pathare has also highlighted the extremely poor condition of the underpasses in Vimannagar and Chandannagar. He has demanded their urgent repair to make them safe for public use. According to him, these underpasses lack adequate lighting and cleanliness, making them feel unsafe for women, students and elderly citizens who regularly use these amenities. Speaking about the overall demands, Pathare told TOI, "The traffic system in Wadgaonsheri constituency needs streamlining. It is essential to have not only smooth traffic flow but also safe transportation. I am confident that the administration will consider my demands."
