Eritrea: Training on Social Science in Gash Barka
The office of the PFDJ in the Gash Barka Region has provided training on social science to youth workers in the region. The training was conducted from 23 June to 2 July in Barentu. The objective of the training was to enhance the productivity and overall awareness of the youth working in PFDJ and Government institutions. The training was attended by 139 participants, including 68 females, composed of youth Government workers and PFDJ organizations. Mr. Ahmed Tahir, Head of Political Affairs of the PFDJ in the region, stated that the training covered the basic concepts of politics, the significance and necessity of organization, the history of the Eritrean people from ancient times to independence, the National Charter, organizational framework and transitional law, nation and nationalism, religious radicalism and its consequences, as well as the role of youth in resilience and development. Indicating that this was the first training of its kind organized at the regional level, Ambassador Mahmud Ali Jabra, Secretary of the PFDJ in the region, said that it would make a significant contribution to strengthening political and organizational activities. At the event, Brig. Gen. Eyob Fesehaye (Halibai), Commander of the Eastern Command of the Eritrean Defense Forces, delivered a seminar focusing on the role of cadres in the political and armed struggle of the Eritrean people, as well as on the current situation in the homeland. Brig. Gen. Eyob also called on the youth to develop their overall understanding and awareness and to strengthen their contribution and participation in national affairs. Eritrea: Programs in Connection with Martyrs' Day
Various programs in connection with Martyrs' Day, 20 June, have been conducted in Asmara from 16 to 18 June. The National Confederation of Eritrean Workers conducted a popular campaign at Asmara Martyrs Cemetery, along with cultural programs and support initiatives for martyrs' families. The campaign at the Martyra Cemetery was attended by 160 workers from the central office and affiliated workers' confederations. At the cultural program organized at the confederation's central office, Mr. Tesfay Girmay, Head of Administration and Finance, stated that over 80 members of the central office have been supporting eight families of martyrs since 2024. In related news, the cooperative association of members of the 52nd Division organized a program in connection with Martyrs' Day at the Meshalit historical site on 17 June. The event was attended by members of the association and youth workers' organizations. At the event, veteran fighters provided briefings on the heroic feats demonstrated by the then 52nd Division of the EPLF in its 1988 battle against enemy forces at the Meshalit Front. Meshalit Front is located 30 km north of Keren. The cooperative association of the 70-16 Division also conducted a popular campaign at the Barentu Martyrs Cemetery, which included tree planting and environmental sanitation activities. Eritrea: Workshop on Reducing Environmental Pollution
A workshop aimed at addressing health problems affecting humans and livestock, as well as environmental pollution caused by unsafe waste management and plastic use, was conducted on 13 June in Barentu, Gash Barka Region. Mr. Abubeker Osman, Director General of Agriculture and Land in the region, stated that although directives have been issued at the national level to mitigate the impact of plastic use on the environment, plastic products are still widely used by the public. He noted that the workshop aimed to review the measures taken so far and to discuss further actions needed to ensure environmental safety. Mr. Abraha Gebreamlak, head of the Agriculture branch, provided an extensive briefing on environmental resources, their benefits, and the challenges related to solid and liquid waste management. He highlighted the coordinated efforts in areas such as Teseney and Akordet, where administrations and communities are working together to eliminate hazardous wastes, including plastic. He stressed the need to implement the existing national guidelines. Ambassador Mahmud Ali Hirui, Governor of the region, emphasized that environmental pollution caused by plastic is becoming increasingly alarming. He called for the establishment of a committee involving all administrations and relevant institutions to assess current waste management practices and plastic use, and to propose concrete measures for improvement. Eritrea: Seminar on Meaning of Independence and the Sacrifice Paid
A seminar focusing on the meaning of Independence and the sacrifices made to achieve and safeguard national sovereignty was conducted in Barentu. The event was organized by the National Union of Eritrean Youth and Students in connection with the 34th Independence Day anniversary. Brig. Gen. Eyob Fesehaye (Halibai), Commander of the Western Command of the Eritrean Defense Forces, emphasized that independence goes beyond mere words, carrying deep significance and an immeasurable cost. He noted that due to the tireless efforts of the Eritrean people and Government since independence, the values of the revolution have been preserved, placing Eritrea on a firm footing while foiling direct and indirect external hostilities. Highlighting this year's theme as a reflection of the resolute stance of the Eritrean people and Government, Brig. Gen. Eyob elaborated on the importance of remembering the resilience of the Eritrean people and the heavy price paid for independence. He also called on the younger generation to play their part in preserving the legacy of their forebears and protecting national sovereignty. Participants called for the organization of similar seminars to enhance the younger generation's understanding of their history. Similarly, a seminar focused on the history of Eritrean resilience and the atrocities committed by enemy forces was conducted for students and members of the Defense Forces from 11 to 13 May in the port city of Massawa, also in connection with the 34th Independence Day anniversary. During the seminar, Mr. Simon Woldemicael, a member of the PFDJ Central Office, gave an extensive briefing on the Eritrean people's struggle for independence. Mr. Simon also urged the public—particularly the youth—to actively and consciously participate in preserving and transmitting Eritrea's vibrant history to future generations.
