Retail giant employee caught stealing phones on the job

Harvey Norman Mandurah used CCTV to catch an employee stealing two iPhones. Amy Louise Barnard, a 45-year-old mother of three, stole an iPhone 13 worth $879 and iPhone 16e worth $997 while sorting stock at the Gordon Road store. The theft occurred in October 2024 and February 2025 and on both occasions, Barnard was caught on CCTV placing the phones in her bag. Your local paper, whenever you want it. Barnard pleaded guilty to two counts of stealing as a servant and faced sentencing at Mandurah Magistrates Court earlier this month. Duty lawyer Dan Jones said Barnard's offending was an 'egregious breach of trust', but explained that her ex-partner's death from cancer had contributed to the offending. Magistrate Leanne Atkins said she was looking at sentencing Barnard to community service work. But Mr Jones asked for a fine as community work would place a significant burden on her due to her having sole care for her three children since her ex-partner's death. Ms Atkins agreed and fined Barnard $2000 and ordered her to pay the value of the iPhones in reparation to Harvey Norman.
