1 shot, robbed in a North Carolina mall parking lot Friday night, police say
A person was shot and robbed in the parking lot of Carolina Place mall in Pineville on Friday night after an arranged meeting led to a fight, police said. The person was hospitalized in stable condition after being shot in the leg in the parking lot of the food court/Barnes & Noble area, according to a Pineville Police Department news release. A Pineville officer who was on an unrelated call at the mall heard a gunshot at 6:43 p.m. and immediately responded, police said. 'The officer provided life-saving measures by placing a tourniquet on the leg area, controlling the bleeding,' according to the police statement. The person's injury was non-life threatening, police said. The shooter ran away, and police didn't announce an arrest Saturday. The person was shot after meeting someone, Pineville Police Chief Michael Hudgins told Charlotte Observer news partner WSOC at the scene. 'It does appear that the crime was targeted based on the information I have at this time,' Hudgins said. Police said they interviewed witnesses and were reviewing security videos. This is a breaking story that will be updated.

The best Prime Day deals on Verge-favorite 4K Blu-rays
Here at The Verge, we love physical media, and we know many of you do as well. That's why it's our duty to share the news that many great 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray movies, TV shows, and box sets are on sale for Prime Day. Amazon is currently offering a ton of great Blu-ray deals (including a 'buy two, get one free' deal), but if you'd rather shop elsewhere, other retailers have an excellent selection of deals, too. Now through July 12th, for example, Target is running a 'buy two, get one free' promo. Barnes & Noble, meanwhile, is hosting a big sale on Criterion Collection classics through July 27th. One thing to note — and you may already be aware of this — is that you need a 4K Blu-ray player to play 4K Blu-rays. The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X can both serve as a basic option, but we thought you'd like to know that Panasonic's solid UB420-K 4k Blu-ray player is also down to $229.72 (normally $250) at Amazon. If you'd like to take a gamble on a returned 'like new' model through Amazon Resale (formerly Amazon Warehouse), Prime members can get one for just $148.79 before tax. It's tough to beat the value of getting all three LOTR films in 4K (both the theatrical and extended cuts) in a single set for under $100. Plus, each film is presented in Dolby Vision HDR with Atmos. You can get all three of Christopher Nolan's Batman movies for $40 off for Prime Day. The 9-disc 4K set will put speaker systems to the test with plenty of Hans Zimmer's signature 'bwaaaaaah' sounds. The 4K version of 2024's sleeper hit is presented in Dolby Vision HDR and Atmos sound. It includes director commentary, deleted scenes, and plenty of creepy smiles. Everyone's favorite interstellar horror film from '97 got the 4K Dolby Vision treatment. It includes a commentary by director Paul W.S. Anderson, a 'making of' documentary, and more. Arcane, the incredible animated series based on the League of Legends franchise, has jumped from Netflix onto this three-disc 4K Blu-ray set. You'll also get a 'making of' featurette, as well as scene breakdowns. You can now buy both acclaimed Nickelodeon series in one collection, each presented in 1080p. The set includes several bonus features as well, such as audio commentaries for The Legend of Korra. This 4K version of Parasite is available in HDR10 and HDR10 Plus formats. More importantly, the included Q&A with director Bong Joon Ho is in 4K, too. The 4K version of Quentin Tarantino's 2003 revenge epic features Dolby Vision HDR and a 'making of' featurette, along with other bonus content. Twin Peaks: Z to A includes all three seasons of David Lynch's surreal crime drama. All episodes are presented in 1080p, except for the pilot and part eight of season three, which are in 4K. You also get a host of bonus features. The 2023 film is presented here in glorious 4K, with visual effects so impressive that the film earned an Oscar at the 2024 Academy Awards. If you've never seen The Substance, get ready for some of the most intense body horror imaginable. Nothing will prepare you for the twists… or for how good this flick is. This 1999 Star Trek spoof has a lot of heart. Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Rockwell, and Tim Allen star in a sci-fi comedy that is, yes, very dumb, but definitely worth watching. Looking for a summer read? Barnes & Noble is on track to open more than 60 new bookstores this year. Here's where
Nothing says summer more than a trip to the beach, and for many people, that includes the perfect summer read. If you're looking, here's some good news: After a decade of downsizing, partly due to Amazon's rise combined with changes in consumer behavior, bookstores are back—with Barnes & Noble leading the renaissance with a major expansion, on track to open over 60 new bookstores in 2025 alone, according to a spokesperson for the bookseller. The retailer currently runs approximately 600 bookstores nationwide, as well as online. Halfway through the year, Barnes & Noble told Fast Company it has already opened 23 bookstores in 2025. '[We] are enjoying a period of tremendous growth as the strategy to hand control of each bookstore to its local booksellers has proven so successful,' a spokesperson for Barnes & Noble said. 'We are experiencing strong sales in existing stores and have been opening many new stores as a result.' In the early 2000s, Barnes & Noble opened 30 stores or more a year, but simultaneously closed about half that number too, according to The Wall Street Journal. By 2013, a decade later, it was on track to close about a third of its brick-and-mortar retail stores, and would continue shrinking over the next 10 years. But by 2023, consumer demand was back, and the bookseller started ramping up again. As Fast Company previously reported, the resurgence is thanks in large part to social media, in particular, TikTok 's #BookTok. But some credit also goes to a rise in so-called third spaces—places people are flocking to post-pandemic that are neither home nor work, as Americans seek real connection amid an epidemic of loneliness now plaguing our nation (especially among Gen Z). As Americans spend more time at home and on their devices, many now have fewer friends (particularly men) and fewer social outlets. But many new bookstores today are opening with a cafe or even a bar to allow for more interaction, like New York City's Book Club Bar and Bibliotheque, or (my personal favorite) Boston's romance novel bookstore, Lovestruck Books. 'Bookstores are a social spot to gather and offer that third space that online shopping cannot provide,' Barnes & Noble told Fast Company. 'Our booksellers are knowledgeable and can provide a dedicated customer service to the in store shopper.' Here's a list of locations where Barnes & Noble has already opened new stores, as well as a list of states where it will be opening new locations in 2025. New Barnes & Noble locations opened in 2025 Barnes & Noble locations expected to open in the second half of 2025 A spokesperson for Barnes & Noble told Fast Company that the company has signed leases to open additional stores in the following states: Pennsylvania New Hampshire Washington South Dakota Texas Massachusetts Tennessee New Jersey Kansas Minnesota Maryland California Louisiana Florida Idaho Michigan Colorado Ohio District of Columbia
