White Sox call up former top prospect Colson Montgomery ahead of Colorado series
Four years after getting drafted out of a small-town Indiana high school, Colson Montgomery is making his major-league debut for the White Sox. The 23-year-old Montgomery will hit seventh and start at shortstop in Friday evening's game in Colorado. He was hitting .218/.298/.435 with 11 home runs and 30 RBIs in 55 games with Triple-A Charlotte. Advertisement Montgomery's ride to the majors almost stalled out of after a hot start. A 6-foot-4 shortstop was drafted No. 22 overall out of Southridge High School in Huntingburg, Ind., by the Sox in 2021. By the following February, The Athletic's Keith Law ranked him as the top prospect in the White Sox system after a solid stint in the Arizona Complex League. In 2022, he played for three teams in the Sox system, including a 14-game stint in Double-A Birmingham. By the following January, he was No. 25 on Law's top prospect list, one spot ahead of Cubs minor-league outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong. Colson got the call 📞 — Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) July 4, 2025 He missed two months with injuries that season, but still put up an .827 OPS in 37 games at Birmingham. In the Arizona Fall League, he was the Fall Stars Game MVP, and while he rose in many prospect rankings (he was No. 9 in baseball for MLB Pipeline), he fell to No. 42 in Law's list. Law wrote: 'He performed well at every level but never quite looked like he did in his torrid 2022 season, when he earned some comps to Corey Seager …' Last season, he looked completely overmatched in Triple-A Charlotte, putting up a .214/.329/.381 slash line with 164 strikeouts in 130 games. He was still in many top 100 prospect rankings, but not The Athletic's. But this winter, Law ranked him as just the seventh-best Sox prospect, writing, 'It's his history — and maybe some blind optimism — that's keeping him alive here.' Montgomery didn't make the Sox roster out of spring training and was off to such a bad start (.149/.223/.255 in 23 games) in Charlotte, the team pulled him out of Triple A in late April to work with director of hitting Ryan Fuller at their Arizona complex and play in the ACL. It felt like a last-ditch effort to salvage his Sox career, but it also worked. He came back up on May 13 and put up a .270/.353/.574 slash line with Charlotte. Advertisement Nineteen of his 33 hits in that 32-game span were for extra bases, including eight homers. He had two multi-homer games last week against the Toledo Mud Hens and slugged .672 in June. Montgomery was drafted during the high point of the Sox rebuild process. Now, Montgomery joins them for the start of their series in Colorado, a matchup between the team that set the modern major-league loss record last year and the team that could break it this season.

Pirates Prospect Update: Pair in Bucs system named top performers
The Pittsburgh Pirates farm system continues to hit headlines as it remains one of the best in baseball. This week a pair of the team's prospects made waves as Konnor Griffin and Edward Florentino were named Players of The Week in their respective leagues. Griffin was called up to High-A Greensboro on June 10, and since his debut with the club against the Rome Emperors he has been dominating the South Atlantic League. Baseball's 34th-ranked prospect has been lights out at the plate, hitting .407/.469/.778 with the Grasshoppers. He's also added 2 homers and 6 stolen bags, bringing his season totals to 11 and 32. Advertisement Griffin has been one of the best players in the Minor Leagues all season and seems to be living up to his high draft position from a season ago. He has a big league ETA of 2028, but many think it's not out of the question to see Griffin in Pittsburgh before 2027, especially if he continues to dominate like this through his development. This past week saw Griffin gather 11 hits, score 10 runs, and add 8 RBIs to his season total to go along with the aforementioned homers and stolen bases. He also had an OPS of 1.247. Florentino is currently the organization's 23rd overall prospect and is quickly making a name for himself in the Florida Complex League. The 18-year old outfielder has started his season in the FCL strong, after spending last year in the Dominican Summer League following his signing with the Pirates. This season Florentino is batting .349/.430/1.093 with 30 hits and 6 RBIs so far. Florentino earned player of the week honors after gathering 8 hits, 1 home-run, 6 RBIs, while having a batting average of .471 showing off as one of the best with the FCL Pirates. At only 18-years of age, Florentino still has a long way to go before even sniffing Major League play, but considering he's shining this much early on and is ranked as one of the organization's top prospects, it brings a lot of hope to see what his future could be like in Pittsburgh. Advertisement The Pirates opened up the season as the 14th-ranked farm system in baseball, but with the way their prospects are playing, it's reasonable to think that they will move up a couple notches when the mid-season rankings are released. The team currently has five prospects ranked inside the top 100. More from

Tigers rookie right-hander Jackson Jobe set to undergo Tommy John surgery
Detroit Tigers rookie right-hander Jackson Jobe will undergo Tommy John surgery, the team announced Wednesday evening. Jobe entered the season ranked as The Athletic's No. 11 overall prospect, and posted a 4.22 ERA through his first 10 starts, enduring learning lessons but also showing flashes of elite stuff. Jobe went on the injured list after his May 28th outing with what the team called a Grade 1 flexor strain in his right arm. Jobe had pitched 4 2/3 innings against the San Francisco Giants, surrendering three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts against three walks. Advertisement His velocity was down across the board, as he averaged 1.4 mph less than his season average on his fastball and 1.8 mph less than average on his sinker. Concern only heightened when Jobe did not talk to reporters and was not seen at all after the game. The Tigers initial medical review alleviated concern for the worst. The Grade 1 diagnosis indicated the strain was mild, though it could still take as long as two months for Jobe to return to play. Further medical evaluation revealed worse damage to Jobe's ulnar collateral ligament, prompting the need for surgery. So now the Tigers are down a starter. And one of baseball's most promising young pitchers will miss the remainder of his rookie season and quite possibly most, if not all, of next year, too.

Top prospect Roman Anthony gets first career hit in second MLB game
BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony, the top-rated prospect in all of baseball, hit a two-run double on Tuesday night in Boston's game against Tampa Bay for his first career base hit. A day after going hitless with an RBI groundout in his major league debut, Anthony came up with runners on second and third in the first inning and drove the ball to left to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead. The 21-year-old second-round draft pick went viral over the weekend when he hit a 497-foot grand slam in Triple-A Worcester. He batted .288 with 10 homers and 29 RBIs in 58 games for the WooSox this season. Anthony's call-up on Monday was so sudden his parents didn't have time to make the trip from Florida, but they were at Fenway Park on Tuesday night to see his second game. ___ AP MLB:
