Could the Boston Celtics sign Charles Bassey to a training camp deal?
Throughout the first three games of Las Vegas Summer League, Charles Bassey quickly endeared himself to Boston Celtics fans around the world. Currently, the Celtics frontcourt looks thin heading into the 2025-26 NBA season, and after some dominant showings, there was hope that Bassey could provide some depth and competition at the center position. However, after his third game with the franchise, Bassey left the Celtics' Summer League roster. He'd only been signed for the first three games in Vegas, reportedly due to other commitments. As such, Bassey's chance of earning an Exhibit 10 contract to continue fighting for a roster spot during training camp and preseason took a significant hit. During a recent episode of the "How 'Bout Them Celtics?" podcast, hosts Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance discussed whether Bassey could still be given an opportunity to challenge for a roster spot with Boston, or whether his tenure with the franchise is over before it even began. Why Charles Bassey did not play with the Boston Celtics in the last game of summer league
If you are wondering why unsigned big man Charles Bassey did not play with the Boston Celtics in their last game of the NBA's 2025 Las Vegas Summer League, we now know why. The Sin City Celtics found themselves without their best overall player in summer league action due to the free agent center having commitments elsewhere this summer. To get the lowdown on why Bassey did not suit up for the Summer Celtics in their penultimate tilt of the annual Nevada summer exhibition series (and their last of the Las Vegas Summer League regular season, if you can call it that), check out what the cohosts of the CLNS Media "Garden Report" podcast, Bobby Manning, Noa Dalzell and A. Sherrod Blakely, had to say in a recent pod with cohost of "The Big Three NBA" podcast, Gary Washburn. The four took some time to talk about Bassey's future, why it won't be with Boston in Vegas, and more. Celtics Summer League standout leaves team after 3 games
LAS VEGAS — Celtics Summer League standout Charles Bassey is no longer with the team, the Celtics shared ahead of Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers. He was always slated to play just three games, the team said, and had prior obligations the rest of the way. Bassey was one of the team's most consistent performers through three games. He opened up Summer League with a 14-point, 11-rebound performance in a Celtics' win over the Memphis Grizzlies, and followed that up with a 22-point, 13-rebound, 3-block performance over the New York Knicks. In Bassey's final game with the Celtics, he recorded 10 points and 9 rebounds. Bassey wasn't initially listed on the Celtics' Summer League roster, but was a last-minute addition. Summer league head coach Matt Reynolds said that Bassey missed the live portion of the first day of practice, but joined the team shorty after. After his debut, when asked what drew him to the opportunity, Bassey cited a reason several Summer League players have pointed to this summer: 'The culture.' Bassey's departure provides Amari Williams with more opportunity Bassey, who was on a two-way contract with the San Antonio Spurs last season, seemed like he could be a good fit to bolster the Celtics' frontcourt. But his departure opens up additional opportunity for Amari Williams, whom the Celtics selected with the 46th overall pick. Williams has appeared in two games so far during Summer League, playing 22 minutes in his debut and 16 minutes in the Celtics' second game. Additionally, forward/center Kenny Lofton — who recently won MVP of the Chinese Basketball Association — could see increased minutes in Bassey's absence. Miles Norris makes several splashes in Celtics' Summer League win over Lakers
The Celtics will play their final summer game either Saturday or Sunday before taking a 2½-month break until the beginning of training camp. Advertisement Norris, a lanky 6-foot-7-inch swingman, has struggled at times offensively but is making an impact on defense and cutting to the rim for dunks. He said he's enjoyed his Celtics experience. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up A couple dimes & a dunk 😮💨 — Boston Celtics (@celtics) 'The whole organization, you know, it's been good to me,' said Norris, who added three rebounds, two steals, and a block in 21 minutes of play. 'Basketball has been enjoyable since I've been here, the environment has been great. So, you know, everyone's having fun. I'm having a lot of fun. 'It's good, I'm just trying to go out there and compete. I'm the two-way now, you know, trying to get work my way. Yeah, I've been enjoying it so far.' Norris said the organization has told him to watch players such as Michael Porter Jr. and Obi Toppin closely as potential comparisons. The club envisions Norris as a 3-and-D player who can knock down corner triples. On Thursday, he flourished from rookie center Amari Williams's passing skills, who found him streaking from the baseline to the hoop. Advertisement Norris was present for the Celtics' late-season surge and playoff run, learning from the veterans. 'The thing I noticed was the preparation, before the court, off the court, you know, guys taking care of their body,' he said. 'The real professionalism. That's the biggest thing I've seen from the veterans you know. JT (Jayson Tatum), JB (Jaylen Brown), Al (Horford), I [saw] Al every day (last season) working on his body. 'It's good to see guys you know, have that longevity, yeah, see how important it is. So I try to take some things from them every day, watch them every day. You know, Try to follow them. Here's some other observations after Thursday night's game: ▪ Charles Bassey is no longer on the Celtics summer league roster. The former San Antonio Spurs big man signed a three-game summer contract with the Celtics and left the club to fulfill other commitments. Bassey played well enough to potentially earn a longer look, possibly a training camp contract. Whether he will be in Boston come September is uncertain. Bassey was tied with Pelicans rookie Derik Queen for the Las Vegas Summer League rebounding lead with 11 per game. He also scored 15.3 points and shot 70.4 percent from the field in the three games. Bassey played three seasons with the Spurs and one with the 76ers, and is currently a free agent. Advertisement The Celtics have a serious void in the paint with the losses of Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet, and the likely departure of Horford to free agency. Backup Neemias Queta and two-way rookie Williams are the lone legitimate centers on the Celtics roster. Bronny James (16 PTS) with the SMOOTH euro-step 😮💨 — NBA (@NBA) ▪ Bronny Fever is definitely rampant in Las Vegas. James, the son of superstar LeBron James, was cheered by the Thomas & Mack crowd the moment he hit the floor for pregame warmups. James did not score in the first half but finished with 18 points, 5 assists, and 3 rebounds. He had a couple of highlight and-1's in the third quarter, but also committed eight turnovers while playing point guard. ▪ Summer league injuries are terribly unfortunate, and Thursday's game was paused for several minutes in the second quarter when former Oklahoma City first-round pick Darius Bazley badly twisted his right knee on a drive for the Lakers. He stayed on the floor for several moments and could be heard groaning in pain. While he was still on the floor, the Thomas & Mack game operations decided to replay the injury, and then the crowd groaned as Bazley remained in pain. Gary Washburn is a Globe columnist. Fulham star Calvin Bassey refurbishes childhood youth club to inspire next generation
Centre-back determined to invest cash and commitment to the centre that helped turn him into a Premier League and Europa League star Calvin Bassey could be forgiven for dining out on his status as Fulham 's Player of last Season. Instead the coveted centre-back has gone back to the future to pay it forward. Bassey, 25, has funded the renovation and reopening of the Forest Gate Youth Centre - where he spent his teenage years - in east London. It was an environment that would shape and encourage his determination to become a footballer, let alone win silverware with Rangers and move to the elite division of English club football. Since impressing at the 2022 Europa League Final with that club, Bassey has been snapped by Dutch giants Ajax and sign for Fulham for a £20million fee two years ago. He has never forgotten, however, how and where it all began - in Forest Gate. The Calvin Bassey Collective launched last week, hosting 90 young people and giving back to the community. It is an initiative rooted in community, inclusivity, and empowerment, pledging long-term support for young people across London by investing in safe spaces and creating opportunities both on and off the pitch. 'For me, it's special,' Bassey told Mirrorfootball, "because it's a place me and my friends used to come, gather and just have fun, Just be kids. 'The centre was able to provide us with certain things my family didn't have. A table tennis table, for example. 'I didn't have that at home, so being able to come here and play table tennis sounds so simple, but when you're here, it's lit. 'So I've got good memories with my boys here.' It hasn't all been plain sailing for Bassey. As with a number of areas across the country, crime has blighted and claimed the lives of loved ones he grew up with over the years. But the heartbreak has acted as an inspiration rather than an obstacle. 'I'm just a normal guy and I want to show kids that if I can do it, they can do it. That's what I want them to leave with them. 'That's my motivation to improve this safe space with a gym, new astro turf and goals for them to play football. 'I want try to help this place stay fun and interactive for the kids. It's important to me. 'Growing up I've had friends, I've lost friends and it's important for me to not have other kids repeat that cycle. 'Unfortunately we've had kids in the area getting involved in gang knife crimes. So for me it's my way of trying to tackle it and give kids the inspiration that if one angle doesn't work out, there are other ways that you can achieve your dream. 'There are other opportunities out there and for me it's making sure they're focused on what's more important.' Religion was all important to Bassey as a child and still is. Both his parents made sacrifices - despite their humble beginnings - to ensure his career could begin at Leicester. He is now proud to praised God for his success. 'God is my guide. He protects me. My middle name is Chinedu which means 'God leads'. 'So God guides me and he protects me. And I'm so happy that people are coming out and being so open about it, showing the amazing things God's been able to do in our lives, you know, because I truly believe that without God, none of this would be here.' Crystal Palace 's shock FA Cup win has acted to inspire clubs outside the Premier League 's top six teams that they too can beat the elite clubs to silverware in the most competitive league in the world. Fulham kick of the new season away to Brighton next month and Bassey is confident his side will be among the clubs similarly hungry to defy the odds. 'Last season, the so-called mid-table clubs like Bournemouth did so well and it just goes to show the quality in the Premier League throughout - from position one to position 20. 'We were able to beat Liverpool in April and they went on to be champions. It shows what happens with togetherness and when players really buy into what the manager wants- you can achieve anything.'
