E1 Series in €20m fundraise as it plots expansion and London race
Celebrity-backed electric powerboating series E1 is seeking around €20m (£17m) from a fresh round of fundraising as it this week steps up plans to secure a race in London. E1 has engaged Rothschild and Co to seek an investor to inject capital, which bosses have earmarked for a second fleet of boats and commercial and marketing activities. It comes as the series, which is 50 per cent owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, prepares to stage a showcase on the Thames on Wednesday. 'We are going through a fundraise because we want to build another set of boats,' said E1 CEO Rodi Basso. 'We're using Rothschild and co as an advisor. They have so far pitched our championship to 50 family offices, all interested in sports. 'We so far had 20 management pitches, of which I think five went to the second round. The target is by the Monaco race, which is 19 July, we should have more clarity on who's really interested.' E1 is keen to find a US investment partner that can help it grow its presence in North America, where team owners such as Will Smith and LeBron James are based. Interested parties are being invited to bid at their chosen valuation. PIF is not diluting its stake but declined to increase it. Basso says E1 is targeting a €500m valuation by 2030, based on increased sponsorship, higher entry fees and expanding the current seven-race calendar to 15 dates. London, where the series is headquartered and shares a base with fellow renewable energy-based racing competitions Formula E and Extreme H, is a key race candidate. E1's racebird boats will make their debut on the Thames today as part of a showcase that organisers hope strengthen their case for a race in the capital. 'We love these kind of iconic places. We also love to invite international guests to come to our races because that's also perceived as a great value for our state stakeholders,' said Basso. 'It would be amazing to race here. Let's say that we feel a light, gentle pressure in this short run that we are doing tomorrow [Wednesday], because I think we will be watched and observed to understand the impact. We are very close to the local authorities. 'London is not even England, it's not even Europe; London is the world. It's a super iconic city. The creative industry in England is huge. So it makes a lot of sense.' E1 is currently halfway through its second season, having completed races in Jeddah, Doha, Dubrovnik and Lake Maggiore. After Monaco, it races in Lagos and then Miami. Aside from Smith and James, team owners include Rafael Nadal, Tom Brady, Virat Kohli, Didier Drogba and Steve Aoki. Sign in to access your portfolio

Powerboat racing-E1 seeks new stakeholder to fund growth with more boats
LONDON (Reuters) -Electric powerboat racing's E1 World Championship is seeking 20 million euros ($23.55 million) of fresh capital to fund the growth of a series already backed by some of the biggest celebrities in sport and entertainment. Team owners include actor Will Smith, tennis great Rafa Nadal, NBA superstar LeBron James, seven-times NFL Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, Indian cricketer Virat Kohli and former footballer Didier Drogba. Chief executive Rodi Basso told reporters on Tuesday the series wanted to expand from nine to 12 teams and 15 races from a current seven, adding venues in Asia and South America, and have a 500 million pound ($685.35 million) valuation by 2030. He was unable to provide a current valuation. "We're using Rothschild and Co. as an advisor and focal point. They have so far pitched our championship to, like, south of 50 family office VC (venture capital), all interested in sports," said Basso. "We so far had 20 management pitches, of which I think five went already to the second round. The target is by the Monaco race, which is 19 July, we should have more clarity on who's really interested." Basso said the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), investors in Formula E, Extreme H and E1 as part of an Electric 360 project, wanted to maintain their holding but not increase it. "They recognised if you get a strategic new stakeholder in the mix it could help the company to grow even better," he explained. "There's a lot of interest from the U.S. and 75% of the leisure boating market is from the U.S. and we have Tom Brady, Will Smith, Marc Anthony, Steve Aoki and LeBron James. We need to expand and explode in the U.S. "So if we have a strategic shareholder from there it will be very, very helpful." E1 has a 25-year exclusive licence from powerboating's global governing body, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), and seeks to promote innovation in sustainable marine technology and coastal conservation. Basso said the new investment would fund a second set of boats to be kept in Singapore or Miami to minimise freight between races and allow sustainable expansion in the Far East and Americas. The RaceBird boats combine foil technology with advanced electric propulsion systems and can hit 93kph or 50 knots, with crews of male and female pilots. Team owners pay two million pounds initially, which they can recoup through sponsorship, and an operational fee with E1 providing and owning the boats in a "show up and race" format. Teams run to between five and 10 people. The boats will appear on London's River Thames for the first time on Wednesday in an early morning show run. The next race is in Monaco, followed by Lagos and then a finale in Miami. ($1 = 0.8493 euros) ($1 = 0.7296 pounds) (Reporting by Alan Baldwin, editing by...)

Why I fell in love with a beautiful Italian road bike
There are cool bikes, there are nice bikes, there are practical bikes, but there are few bikes so beautiful that even noncyclists look at it and think, wow. The Basso's new SV is one of those — the Italian brand has created a grande bellezza. The SV stands for Sempre Veloce, meaning always fast, and that is accurate. This bike is rapid. The stiff, light frame makes it feel like there's nothing beneath you. You turn the pedals and the bike goes, there's no delay, no wasted watts, it doesn't feel like you're steering a barge. In fact it often feels like you're steering nothing at all — just your power, directed straight into the tarmac. But this is also a bike that Basso claims is correct for 95 per cent of people. It is its all-rounder, appealing to the current trend within cycling of having a do-it-all machine rather than an aero bike and a climbing bike and a winter bike. Does it do it all? Yes, and very well. • Read more luxury reviews, advice and insights from our experts With such carbon machines you often trade ride comfort for lightness and stiffness. Pure racing bikes feel as if they'll break your back on any potholes or bumps in the road — and we have the odd one or two of those in the UK. But the SV is a fine ride, stiff in all the right places and softer where it needs to be. I tested it with 32mm Grand Prix 5000 S tyres that were perfect and when I hit our pockmarked Essex roads my back remained intact. It handles beautifully, even in fast-speed corners. The bike gripped the road, the balance of the ride was perfect. And out of the saddle on the climbs it was a joy. The only problem was the surroundings in which I rode — the grey sky, the damp road, this is not scenery befitting such a bike. But later on, rolling along a narrow country lane, the sun beginning to peek between the clouds, light twinkling on the bike's frame, I saw galloping deer in the rolling fields alongside me and suddenly everything felt all right. The components are as high-end as you might expect. While you can configure your bike with your own choices, the Dura Ace di2 groupset is as smooth and reliable as always and the DT Swiss wheels are the perfect companions. None of this really matters, though, because the bike is just so beautiful. I had the SV in the Viola Galaxy colour, a groovy, sparkly blue-orange. The front fork is subtle and low-profile and the down tube has a slight aero kink in it that gives it character. When I pulled up to a coffee shop for an espresso and a sandwich I left the bike outside to be admired by other cyclists and passers-by. If only we had been in its native Italy, among the ruins of Rome, perhaps, or the vineyards of Tuscany, they would surely have said: 'Che bella!' Basso SV as ridden £8,889, starting from £6,730;
