Do you have bad beach etiquette? A new study breaks down Americans' most shameless beach behaviors

Americans might love going to the beach, but their beach behavior might tell a different story. A new survey of more than 1,000 adults by found that while 93-percent of Americans claim they have great beach etiquette, almost the exact same number—92-percent—admit to at least one bad beach habit. It's the classic "it's everyone else, not me" defense, and it's not pretty. Here's what the survey reveals. A staggering 70-percent of respondents openly admit to peeing in the ocean. Nearly half (49-percent) drink alcohol on beaches where it's banned. And 39-percent pocket shells or sand as souvenirs, ignoring the fact that this seemingly harmless habit actually damages coastal habitats and speeds up beach erosion. Beachgoers also admit to smoking, feeding wildlife, littering and not picking up after pets. Even so, ask beachgoers what grinds their gears, and you'd think the respondents were beach angels. Littering tops the list of what Americans find most annoying, followed by people who don't pick up after their pets and, of course, those who plop down a towel a little too close for comfort. On average, Americans commit three etiquette sins per trip, yet 70-percent say these same behaviors ruin their day. Beyond the stats, the real problem is that millions of beach visitors don't adhere to the principle of "leave no trace," whether it's a plastic cup, dog waste or removing that "harmless" handful of shells that many forms of marine life depend on. If you want to avoid the most common beach annoyances, you can head for hidden gems and tucked-away beaches with far fewer crowds, but the better solution is to be a beach ambassador by picking up your trash, giving others space, wearing headphones and locating the nearest public toilet. Hopefully, fellow beachgoers will follow suit. Most annoying beach behaviors, according to Americans: Littering Not picking up after pets Sitting too close Loud music Shaking sand Children invading space Smoking Pets invading space Peeing in the water Taking saved spots Bad beach behaviors that Americans admit to: Peeing in the water Drinking alcohol Taking sand or shells Taking too long in beach facilities Loud music Not picking up after pets Littering Smoking or vaping Feeding wildlife Sitting too close

Most Americans are guilty of this seriously gross behavior during a day out at the beach

They're a bunch of pissers. With July 4th falling on a Friday this year, the American Automobile Association expects 72.2 million Americans to be hitting the roads and airports. Many of those travelers will most likely plant their patriotic selves on a beach somewhere to celebrate America's birthday. Now the question is, will these beachgoers behave? Be careful next time you're going for a dip. Stock fresh – According to a new study by 92% of Americans have engaged in rude beach behavior — like setting up camp on top of other people or playing music too loudly — but that's not even the worst of it. Most of the study's participants are guilty of peeing in the ocean on any given beach day. Yes, 70% of US beachgoers confessed to going waist deep into the ocean to relieve themselves instead of finding a nearby bathroom. 18% of people find this tinkle habit annoying — but what they don't know won't hurt them. Many beachgoers have no problem admitting they go for a pee dip. agratitudesign – Other beach confessions included drinking alcohol on beaches where it's prohibited (49%) and stealing sand or shells (38%) — which is a tad more innocent than the potty one. Almost 30% of the people surveyed are aware that their obnoxiously loud music playing on the beach annoys others — but that doesn't stop them. According to the study, 2 in 10 Americans smoke on the beach — despite others probably holding their breath while the beachy breeze blows the stinky smell in their faces. Loud tunes and smoke aside, 82% of participants said the most annoying thing fellow beachgoers can do is litter — but only 1 in 4 actually admit to doing it. In terms of who is guilty of this naughty beach behavior, it's no surprise that older folks are a more considerate group compared to Gen Zers (30%), who are the most rowdy ones. Millennials (26%) and Gen X (23%) aren't in the clear as they fall somewhere in the middle when it comes to engaging in impolite beach behavior. To conduct this research, asked over 1,000 American men and women participants — aged 18-77, who visit the beach at least once a year — which behaviors they find irritating and which they partake in. If you want to relax — or pee — on a beach this weekend but prefer to stay local, Cooper's Beach on the Southhampton shore has been ranked the best beach in the country by Florida International University environmental sciences expert Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, aka 'Dr. Beach.' He earned this nickname by conducting annual rankings of beaches since 1991.

This Is the Most Affordable Beach Vacation Destination in the U.S. Is in a Surprising Texas City

Planning a summer beach vacation might not be at the top of your to-do list right now—the wild prices of staples like eggs and milk mean that everyone has to be a little more budget-conscious this year. But a new study from finds that it is still possible to take an affordable beach vacation this year—it just might not be in the cities you usually associate with sandy shores, extra sunblock, and turquoise waters. The study named Pasadena, Texas, is the most affordable beach destination in the United States, among both big and small cities. Pasadena isn't super walkable, but for all other factors combined, it adds up to having the lowest costs across the board. Vacationers will spend an average of $1,549 for two people when staying in a hotel. Methodology The study evaluated large and small city beach towns to determine which destinations would make the smallest dent in your bank account. To create the ranking matrix, the report analyzed various factors, including what the costs would be for two adults in each location. This includes weekend dining costs, everyday expenses, airfare, hotel rates, vacation rental rates, walkability, and price volatility. This last one is important because it accounts for the seasonal price changes that many popular destinations have throughout the year. For many people, the Texas city might not jump out as an obvious beach destination. It is named after the significantly more well-known Pasadena, California, and is just down the road from the much more popular Galveston, Texas. But just because it doesn't have the name recognition of Miami or Malibu doesn't mean it doesn't have some beautiful coastline to enjoy. The city has access to several beaches, including El Jardin Beach Park and Sylvan Beach—and isn't too far from some famous barrier islands like Red Fish Island and Brother Island Beach. Pasadena is also only a short drive away from Houston, which means that you can also get some time exploring the city's vibrant art scene and maybe even catch a rodeo. If you're looking for even more Gulf-front beach towns on the Texas Coast, Travel + Leisure has you covered with a guide to the best Texas beaches. And if you're looking for other affordable beach destinations across the U.S., you'll find plenty in the study. For more small town affordability, you can consider Hialeah, Florida, or Elizabeth, New Jersey. For big city options, consider Long Beach, California, or Tampa.
