Cummins hails match-winners as Australia get going in WTC27 ICC World Test Championship
In a match that ebbed and flowed, it was Australia who emerged victorious against West Indies in the opening Test of the three-match series in Bridgetown. While the win may not erase the heartbreak of Lord's just two weeks ago, it marks a positive start to their World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, with their first points now on the board. There was little to separate the sides after the first two innings – just 10 runs, in fact. Jayden Seales' five-wicket haul helped bowl Australia out for 180, before a disciplined all-round effort from the Australian bowlers restricted West Indies to 190, giving the hosts a slender lead. Australia found themselves in trouble at 65/4 after another top-order collapse, but the middle-order trio of Travis Head, Beau Webster and Alex Carey steadied the ship with crucial half-centuries. Head and Webster put together a 102-run stand, with Head playing the aggressor. After Head's dismissal, Carey took charge, highlighted by two brilliant straight sixes off Seales and Justin Greaves. "I thought those three were brilliant," Australia skipper Pat Cummins said at the post-match press conference. "They kept the scoreboard ticking over. I thought they took really good options. They were always looking to score. 'Really, that was the difference. [You are] turning up today thinking that if we didn't get a big lead it was 50-50, really. Those guys took the game away from West Indies." Cummins was particularly impressed by Beau Webster, who, despite having played just five Tests, has already built a reputation for digging Australia out of tough spots with grit and composure on challenging surfaces. On debut against India, the 31-year-old made an instant impact, scoring a half-century on a spicy Sydney pitch in the first innings and following it up with a brisk unbeaten 39 in their victorious chase. In the World Test Championship Final against South Africa, Webster stood tall with a counter-attacking 72 off 92 balls, the top score in Australia's first-innings total of 212. Against West Indies, he once again proved pivotal, anchoring two key partnerships in the second innings with a composed 63 off 120 balls that turned the tide in Australia's favour. He also made an impact with the ball, claiming two wickets in the first innings. "I think it's pretty much the same as what he does for Tasmania," Cummins said on Webster. "He seems to always contribute in some way. He's kind of knocked down the door with his performances over the years in Shield cricket. It's great when you've got someone like that coming to the team. 'They know their craft so well and you saw that today, even on a tricky wicket, he knew where his areas to score were. He's been a fantastic asset to the team over the last six months." After setting West Indies a target of 301, Australia needed just one session and under 34 overs to seal the win, dismantling the hosts for 141. Leading the charge was the ever-reliable Josh Hazlewood, who delivered a brilliant five-wicket haul to cap off the dominant performance. 'Give Josh a wicket with any little bit in it, and he finds it,' Cummins added on his pace bowling partner Hazlewood. 'Just hits the right area, ball after ball, presents good seam. I thought he was great at Lord's as well last week, without perhaps the returns that he was deserved. 'It's a huge asset to have him on our side as well. He's been keeping Scotty Boland out of the side and we know how good Scotty is. Really pumped for Josh this week.' But, as has been the case throughout this Test, there was plenty happening at Bridgetown. Here's what you missed while you were sleeping. FOLLOW LIVE: Australia hunt wickets late on day three SEVENTH HELL West Indies coach Daren Sammy said after day two that his team needed a 'bollocking' after dropping six catches over the first two days of the Test. The hosts practised work in the cordon before play. And yet Justin Greaves still couldn't hang onto a chance gifted by Travis Head on 21, denying Alzarri Joseph a wicket and continuing the pain for the Windies. AS PLUMB AS IT GETS The Kensington Oval pitch had been playing tricks since day one, and balls had started to keep low. Sensing that a ball would have his name on it, Head sought to attack, and did successfully, getting to 62. It was a sensible call, because that ball duly arrived, with Shamar Joseph shooting one through that trapped the left-hander stone cold in front as he lost his balance. Joseph didn't need to appeal, with Head walking off before the finger was raised. HOLDING COURT Third umpire Adrian Holdstock had been in Sammy's sights at the end of day two following a string of contentious calls that went the way of the tourists. Well there was finally some good news for the Windies on an UltraEdge front when Beau Webster departed on review with a spike showing he had nicked one down the leg side on 63. HIT THE ROOF Alex Carey played a classic punchy wicketkeeper's innings at No.7, blasting his way to 50 from just 40 balls including two sixes. The second six brought up his half-century as he danced down the wicket and launched Justin Greaves over deep mid-off and onto the roof of the Cricket West Indies hospitality building. Australia build lead after Head and Webster dig in against West Indies
Travis Head has given Australia a fresh scent of victory in the first Test after delivering his second half-century against West Indies in Bridgetown. It helped Australia reach lunch on the third day in an improving position. Having resumed on 4-92, the tourists shored up their position by reaching 5-181, growing their lead from 82 to 171. Head had contributed 59 as Australia were all out for 180 in their first innings. West Indies' reply of 190 left the match tantalisingly poised. On a difficult surface in Barbados, Head made 61 before becoming the only Australian wicket to fall in the first session. Despite a reputation built on aggressive batting, here he went about his work with great patience, testament to his quality and character. He eventually fell to a straight one from Shamar Joseph that kept low and thundered into his pads. There was no doubting that and Head departed with a rueful smile without considering a review. He had earlier had a moment of good fortune when dropped at second slip by Justin Greaves when on 21. Head took advantage of that reprieve to put on a 102-run partnership with Beau Webster, the highest of the match. After Head's departure, Webster had progressed to his half-century before falling for 63 leaving Alex Carey to lead the innings and make life difficult for the West Indian attack.

Trailing on first innings by just ten runs after the Caribbean side were dismissed at tea for 190 in reply to the Aussies' first innings total of 180, the match is balanced on a knife's edge as Australia lead by 82 runs with six wickets in hand.
