Camanachd Cup holders Kingussie, Oban, Fort and 'More reach semis
Tulloch Camanachd Cup holders Kingussie swept into the semi-finals with a 5-0 victory at miles along the road in Kiltarlity, it was the same score line for Oban Camanachd over Lovat. Newtonmore overcame a shock early setback to dispose of National Division hosts Inveraray 4-1 and a last-minute 2-1 winner at Rearaig sent Fort William through against once possible relegation candidates, progressed to the top half of the Mowi Premiership with a 4-0 home win over Borthwick struck for Kingussie after just two minutes but the real match winner was Roddy Young, who grabbed a double late in the first half, and two more in the Lord, Daniel MacVicar and Ross Campbell in the first half, then Daniel MacCuish and Malcolm Clark in the second, gave Oban Camanachd a clear passage into the last Donnan's early goal for National Division strugglers Inveraray opened the door for a possible surprise and, although Steven MacDonald quickly replied for the Premiership title contenders, the score remained level into the second half. An Iain Robinson double and a goal from Joe Coyle secured resurgent Newtonmore's 11th consecutive league and cup Nixon grabbed an early breakthrough for Kinlochshiel, which was very quickly cancelled out by Victor Smith. The tie progressed to the cusp of extra time before Ewen Campbell snatched Fort's Portree, an early own goal from Ian McCall was followed by a Dan MacDonald goal on either side of one from Ruaraidh MacLeod to secure Skye's fourth consecutive league victory and fifth who beat pointless Strathglass 4-0, and Col Glen, who defeated Kilmallie 3-1 in their games in hand, closed in on National Division leaders Lochaber.

Shinty: Lovat claim derby bragging rights and boost survival chances with victory against Beauly
Lovat's 3-0 victory over Beauly was about much more than claiming the derby bragging rights as the win also boosted the Balgate men's Mowi Premiership survival chances. During an even first half, Sam Stubbs put Lovat ahead with a strike from distance on the right. Marc MacLachlan added a fine solo effort, juggling the ball away from two defenders on the left before sending a glorious drive over the keeper's left shoulder into the far corner of the net. Greg Matheson made it 3-0 and although Lovat still occupy the second relegation spot, they are now level on points with Kinlochshiel. Kyles and Skye are a point better off with Caberfeidh two points above the drop zone. Lovat manager Iain Nicolson said: 'This fixture means a lot to both clubs but I've tried to get the players to take the emotion and passion out of their minds, so it doesn't affect our game. 'I feel they've done that, and we've taken maximum points from Beauly this season. 'I was missing five players today but that didn't affect us, and we deservedly won. There was a 15 minute period at the start where we were tense and they had a couple of opportunities but once we settled and scored the first goal it was a bit easier. 'I'm delighted for Sam, Marc, and Greg who produced really good finishes and we also kept a clean sheet with a solid defensive performance and Graeme Macmillan turned in a good display. 'It's a quick turnaround now as we've our rearranged game against Caberfeidh on Tuesday but going into that with confidence helps a lot.' Beauly remain bottom and co-managers Niall MacLennan and Gregor Mccormick are giving promising keeper Lennox Stewart game time as regular goalie Lee Dunbar won't be available next season. Newtonmore closed the gap at the top of the table to a single point when they beat Kinlochshiel 3-0. Newtonmore's determination to get the job done was evident from the first minute when Iain Robinson fired a 25-yarder high into the net. Matthew Sloss and Declan Brannan completed the scoring before the 20-minute mark. Newtonmore manager Peter Ross said: 'We played some really nice shinty and we're starting to prove the doubters wrong. 'The league title is in our own hands and although Kingussie, Oban Camanachd and Fort William will say the same, they have difficult games ahead. Steven Macdonald was tremendous for us again. 'He knows what to do before the ball comes to him and he's a great leader. 'July's a big month for us, ending with a game against Kingussie but it's started well.' Kyles Athletic's fixture with Caberfeidh was postponed due to an unplayable field. Lochaber and Inveraray will contest the Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup Final, after both won their semis 4-1 at Taynuilt. Lochaber led Col Glen 3-1 after just 10 minutes with Shaun Nicolson, Ben Delaney and Findlay MacDonald scoring and Neilly Mcnaughton countering. Max Campbell added a second half penalty. Lochaber boss Ally Ferguson said: 'Ryan Johnstone, Martin Johnstone and Gregor Cameron were stand-outs and it's great to get to the final.' Two-goal Lewis Montgomery helped Inveraray beat Inverness 4-1 Fraser Watt and John Perry's own goal also counted with Charlie MacDonald replying. Glasgow Mid Argyll go third in the Mowi National Division after beating Glenurquhart 5-4. GMA travelled with just 12 players and fell behind to goals from Daniel MacLean and Charlie MacLeod, but Ross Brown's brace and Calum McLay had the visitors 3-2 ahead at half-time. Another from Charlie MacLeod levelled but Calum McLay's second and Ross Brown's hat-trick goal came before John Barr's counter. GMA boss Alan MacRae said: 'I'm delighted with the gritty performance and our 12 men dug in to grind out the result against a young, mobile Glen team. 'We just about edged it in chances created and it was definitely an exciting game with good chances at either end.'

Shinty: Kingussie maintain advantage at Mowi Premiership summit
Victories for the top four left the business end of the Mowi Premiership unchanged, with Kingussie maintaining their slender one-point lead at the summit. The league leaders had to work hard for a 1-0 win at the home of determined bottom side Beauly. Advertisement Oban Camanachd edged Kinlochshiel by the same score in Wester Ross and Fort William defeated Kyles 2-1 at Tighnabruich. Newtonmore extended their run to seven straight league and cup victories, 4-0 against visitors Caberfeidh and in Portree, Skye escaped the second relegation place, consigning Lovat to it on a 5-2 scoreline. Ferguson Balliemore Cup favourites Lochaber ground out a 2-1 victory over Oban Celtic at Mossfield Park. Thomas Borthwick's goal midway through the first half was all that separated champions Kingussie and a Beauly side which looked far better than their league position suggests. Advertisement A first-half Daniel MacVicar penalty kept Oban Camanachd in second place. Fort William kept in pursuit when Calum Shepherd scored just before half-time and Ewen Campbell just after, with Roddy MacDonald's counter insufficient to salvage anything for Kyles. Fourth-placed Newtonmore opened up a four-point gap over their opponents when Joe Coyle and Iain Robinson made it 2-0 at the interval, before Robinson's second and a goal from Conor Jones completed the job. Willie MacKinnon, Ross Gordon and Ruaraidh MacLeod all scored for Skye late in the first half. James MacPherson pulled one back for Lovat and Dan MacDonald made it 4-1 before Cameron MacMillan grabbed the visitors' second and MacLeod completed a double in stoppage time to round it off. Advertisement Lovat now contemplate the MacTavish Cup final against Kingussie from second bottom place in the league with an extra game played. Oban Celtic created a whiff of a Balliemore upset when Kyle MacFarlane put them ahead as the interval beckoned, but a Shaun Nicholson double eventually put Lochaber through. Inverness rushed to a 4-0 lead against Strathglass from the league above them before prevailing 4-2. Cup specialists Inveraray disposed of Aberdour 4-0 including a Lewis Montgomery hat-trick and Col Glen progressed 3-0 on penalties after 120 minutes of play produced a 3-3 draw with Glasgow Mid Argyll.

Shinty: Chilli is back on the menu at Newtonmore ahead of Caberfeidh clash
Shinty's opening day fixture list is reversed as the Mowi Premiership approaches the halfway point. Cameron 'Chilli' McNiven returns for Newtonmore against Caberfeidh. His manager Peter Ross said: 'Chilli's back and we've a clean bill of health other than Michael Russell and Brodie MacBean who have longer-term injuries. 'Brodie has been to Ross Hall Hospital and might need a clean-up operation on his knee but getting him back is going to be such a big boost. I think he's a perfect forward. 'Drew MacDonald and Ritchie Irvine got good game time for the second team last week.' With top scorer Craig Morrison missing through injury, Cabers boss Garry Reid has seen his side draw blanks in their last two outings. He said: 'We just couldn't break Beauly down last week. We had lots of ball in the forward areas, but they defended pretty well. 'I don't think Craig Morrison is ready for a return quite yet and we're also missing Kevin Bartlett. Logan Beaton has picked up a hamstring injury, so I don't think he'll make it either, but Gavin McLaughlin comes back into the squad.' With the WM Donald MacTavish Cup final against Kingussie just a week away, Lovat manager Iain Nicolson takes his side for face former club Skye Camanachd in Portree. He said: 'Unfortunately, we have a few missing for various reasons which isn't ideal both for this important game and in terms of our preparation for the final, but it is what it is. 'That said, I have faith in the boys to get a result and I'm looking forward to coming up against good friends and old teammates.' Skye manager Kenny MacLeod recognises that it's a chance to move out of the relegation zone, saying: 'It's a massive opportunity for us to start climbing the table and I'm fully expecting a tight contest. 'I'm also looking forward to coming up against a good family friend and former teammate in Iain Nicolson. 'I've followed Lovat closely since his appointment, wanting him to do well, but that won't be the case this weekend. 'We'll be at full strength, which is a big boost, and it's great to see Jordan Murchison back training and getting valuable minutes with the second team. He's looking sharp and not far off being in the mix for selection again.' Kingussie manager Iain Borthwick gave a grim report ahead of the trip to Beauly. He said: 'It's not looking good as Rory MacKeachan had a recurrence of his hamstring injury against Skye whilst Savio Genini and Lee Bain are both working. Dylan Borthwick's unavailable and Cammie Bremner only flies back from holiday on Saturday. It's also too early for Liam Borthwick but he's getting there. 'I'm still happy with our 15-player squad. I know they won't let me down and that will make my selection even more difficult come the MacTavish final.' Kinlochshiel's Ali Nixon will have a late fitness test ahead of Oban Camanachd's visit. Shiel manager Willie MacRae said: 'Ali's hopeful and Arron Jack returns. Finlay MacRae and David Falconer are still sidelined, and Mark MacDonald is working.' Daniel Maccuish remains Oban Camanachd's main concern. Kyles Athletic defender Jamie Forgrieve is free from suspension for Fort William's visit. Ferguson Transport and Shipping Balliemore Cup semi-final places are up for grabs and holders Glasgow Mid Argyll visit Col Glen who are without the suspended Jamie MacVicar. The 2023 winners Lochaber are off to Oban Celtic, Inveraray host Aberdour whilst Strathglass and Inverness have derby clash at Cannich. Badenoch extended their lead at the top of the Mowi WCA Premier League after winning 6-1 at Kinlochshiel. Megan Ralph and Kirsty Deans both bagged doubles with Zoe Reid and Hope Borthwick making up their count. Lexie MacKenzie replied. Glenurquhart remain bottom of the table despite their goalless draw with Glasgow Mid Argyll. The Mowi Valerie Fraser Camanachd Cup quarter-final ties take place this weekend and holders Lochaber travel to Inverness.

Beauly enjoy rare win in Camanachd Cup
Beauly won their first game of a nightmare season when they edged visitors Caberfeidh 3-1 on penalties after 120 goalless minutes in the last 16 of the Tulloch Camanachd Division leaders Lochaber came close to creating an upset when they scored first against Lovat at Balgate but lost 2-1. Holders Kingussie had to work hard to edge Skye by the same scoreline and Newtonmore made short work of Glenurquhart, winning 4-0 at the William overwhelmed local rivals Kilmallie 6-1 and the biggest winning margin of the round was Kinlochshiel's 6-0 victory over Inverness, the only survivors from the third Camanachd defeated Kyles 2-0 at Tighnabruich and in the other all-south area tie, Inveraray progressed 3-0 against Glasgow Mid Beauly had to show for 13 previous games was two Premiership draws and two exits from other cups, albeit one of them on penalties against Kingussie.,Ben Delaney gave Lochaber an early breakthrough and it was almost on the hour before Calum Cruden equalised with a penalty, with Graeme MacMillan's winner for Lovat coming soon Borthwick's first-half opener for Kingussie was quickly cancelled by Dan MacDonald before Roddy Young kept Kingussie's defence and hopes of repeating their 2024 Grand Slam on Robinson and Matthew Sloss put Newtonmore well in charge just before half time, before Joe Coyle and Robinson's second completed the was largely one-way traffic at An Aird where Victor Smith scored four for Fort William and Lachie Shaw two, while Lewis Birrell got Kilmallie's consolation at 5-0. Kilmallie's Calum MacDougall was sent for the first time, all of Kinlochshiel's goals were scored by members of the Clan MacRae, with doubles from John and Archie and one each from Keith and MacVicar and Garry Lord both scored in the first 20 minutes to secure Oban Camanachd's progress. All of Inveraray's goals came in the second half with one each from Euan Donnan, Campbell Watt and Coll MacKay.
