CBS Sports Names Malachi Fields As Notre Dame's Top Portal Addition
CBS Sports Names Malachi Fields As Notre Dame's Top Portal Addition originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For the second season in a row, Notre Dame has elected to dip into the transfer portal to find their boundary receiver. Last season, Clemson transfer Beaux Collins came to South Bend for his final season of eligibility and started all 16 games for the Irish at the 'X receiver' position. He was a quality player who logged 41 receptions, 490 receiving yards, averaged 12.0 yards per catch and hauled in three touchdowns. Advertisement Collins was the team's leading receiver until Jaden Greathouse exploded in the CFP Semifinals and the national title game. This season, Notre Dame and offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock needed an impact playmaker at the boundary position and when Cavaliers receiver Malachi Fields entered his name in the portal, it became a no brainer for both parties where the Virginia native should spend his final year of eligibility. "Jaden Greathouse showed some signs as a go-to receiver in the national championship game. But Notre Dame lacked a true WR1 last season and hasn't had a wide receiver clear the 600-yard barrier since 2021. Fields should end that streak. A favorite of personnel departments across the country in the portal this winter, Fields combined for 1,619 yards and 10 TDs over the last two seasons. He's a big vertical field stretcher at 6-feet-4, 220 pounds and is a presence defenses will have to shade coverage toward. That's a dangerous thing when you consider how good Notre Dame's run game projects to be this year." - Chris Hummer, CBS Sports In back to back seasons, Fields logged over 50 receptions, 800 yards, averaged 14.0 yards per catch and hauled in five touchdowns in both 2023 and 2024. In what was considered a dormant offense, Fields was their lone bright spot. His fit at Notre Dame is coming at the perfect time, given Greathouse's breakout in the post season along with a talented returning offensive line and a bump in quarterback passing ability. At 6-4 223 pounds, Fields gives Notre Dame a presence in the boundary it has been lacking since the 2019 season when Chase Claypool was the go-to receiver. His play style and body type resemble Miles Boykins from the 2018 season, a year where he finished with 59 receptions, 872 yards, averaged 14.8 YPC and had eight touchdowns in 13 games. Fields adds a much needed boost in size, experience and production to this Irish receiving corps, and provides a star power element they have been lacking at the position for quite some time. Greathouse showed flashes throughout last season and is expected to be a go-to player once again this year for Denbrock, but the addition of Fields completely changes the narrative. Advertisement Notre Dame hasn't had a dynamic one-two punch at receiver in quite some time, and this will, by far, be the best one-two punch at wide receiver in the Marcus Freeman era. Combine Fields and Greathouse's potential of being a dynamic duo with 6-7 250 pound tight end Eli Raridon and an explosive run game featuring Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price, this Fighting Irish offense will likely put up some serious numbers this season. 2 undrafted receivers will enter New York Giants training camp with head of steam
One question New York Giants fans will be asking themselves this summer is: Who are Beaux Collins and Dalen Cambre, and where did they come from? The Giants' two undrafted wide receivers were standouts during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp, making catches and opening eyes. Next month, they will both get a chance to continue to impress at the team's training camp. Collins (6'3", 201 pounds) began his college career at Clemson and finished at Notre Dame. Like many players who switch schools via the transfer portal, Collins fell off the scouting radar, which tamped down his stats. Cambre (6'0", 192 pounds) played five years at Louisiana, catching only 10 passes for 132 yards in 63 college games. To say he's a deep sleeper is an understatement. Advertisement Collins' sudden emergence could be the reason why the Giants haven't signed any bigger-sized free-agent wideouts. Cambre is a noted special-teamer, a trait the Giants hold great value in. He'll have to continue to prove his value as a receiver to win a roster spot, though. Can one, or both, become the next Victor Cruz? We'll soon see. It won't be an easy road. There's a logjam at wide receiver this summer. Four names -- Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton, Jalin Hyatt, and Wan'Dale Robinson -- are already set in stone. Behind them are veteran free agents Lil'Jordan Humphery and Zach Pascal, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, and Bryce Ford-Wheaton. Collins and Cambre are among a competitive rookie free agent bracket that also consists of Juice Wells Jr., Montrell Washington, Jordan Bly, and Da'Quan Felton. Advertisement It will be a long climb for both, but it should be a fun summer watching these youngsters battle to become Giants. Giants address receiver need in undrafted free agency — including Jaxon Dart's former teammate
The Giants went through seven rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft and did not take a wide receiver with any of their seven selections. That did not mean they were uninterested in adding to the position. Immediately after the draft, they went to work and signed several receivers as undrafted free agents, paying higher money for three with which they are most intrigued. Quarterback Jaxson Dart, acquired in a trade up into the first round, will have one of his college teammates with him this spring and summer. Antwane 'Juice'' Wells Jr. is a well-traveled player, starting his college career at James Madison, continuing it at South Carolina and ending it at Ole Miss. With Dart throwing the ball to him, Wells in 2024 caught 28 passes for 553 yards and six touchdowns. His most eye-catching statistic was averaging 19.8 yards per reception. Collins has good size (6-foot-3, 201 pounds) and was a top recruit for Clemson, but his three years there were slowed by injuries. He started all 16 games this past season for the Fighting Irish and caught 41 passes for 490 yards and three touchdowns. He is a size-speed prospect at 6-5, 213 with a 40-yard dash time of 4.5. Another player to watch is 6-4 safety Makari Paige from Michigan. The other undrafted free agents signed so far: OL Jaison Williams (Youngstown State), WR/special teams Dalen Cambre (Louisiana), TE Jermaine Terry II (Oregon State), WR Jordan Bly (Gardner-Webb), CB RJ Delancy III (Wisconsin), DE Trace Ford, (Oklahoma), S Tommy McCormick (Idaho), WR Nate McCollum (North Carolina).

Notre Dame star had visit with 3 NFL teams including Pittsburgh Steelers
Notre Dame wide receiver Beaux Collins had a last-minute visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of this week's NFL Draft as the AFC North franchise added its name to his list of potential suitors. The former Clemson Tigers star made the switch to the Fighting Irish for his final year of college eligibility for the 2024 season, registering 41 receptions for 490 yards and three touchdowns as he Marcus Freeman's side made it all the way to the College Football Playoff National Championship game . Following the end of the campaign , Collins went on to impress at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, running a 4.55 40 and showcasing his athleticism with a 38-inch vertical leap and a 10'10" broad jump. Since then, reports have emerged stating how the 22-year-old has met with several NFL teams as part of his pre-draft engagements. It was also added that Collins had already held visits with the Chicago Bears and the Los Angeles Chargers , according to league sources, although his visit with the Steelers was not classed as an official pre-draft "30" visit. With the WR not on Pittsburgh's list of 30 non-local visitors, though, it's not entirely clear what the nature of Collins' visit was. As things stand, the former four-star recruit's NFL Draft status remains uncertain. Despite his physical attributes and potential as a possession receiver, there are concerns over his speed, drop rates, and injury history, which may ultimately influence his draft stock. Beaux Collins impressed Pittsburgh Steelers scouting staff at Notre Dame's Pro Day last month (Image: Getty Images) Collins could slide into the late rounds, landing in the sixth or seventh round, but is more likely to be signed as a free agent. Despite having a problem with drops at Notre Dame, he tested well in the NFL Draft Combine and should have done enough to get a chance somewhere. Teams may, however, evaluate his fit based on their roster needs and the depth of available wide receivers. But with the likes of head coach Mike Tomlin , Omar Khan, Arthur Smith, and several other members of the Steelers front office in attendance to watch him at Notre Dame's Pro Day, they should have seen enough of him to make a final judgement. His recent visit to Pittsburgh also provides hope that the franchise is interested in drafting him this weekend. Should the Steelers pass up on the option, however, then perhaps one of Chicago or Los Angeles will take a punt on him, having also welcomed him for visits since the turn of the year.

Former Clemson wide receiver Beaux Collins officially declared for the 2025 NFL Draft on Friday. Collins, who transferred to Notre Dame for the 2024 season, announced his decision on social media. 'Thank you to all the alumni and fans that are a part of the Irish family,' Collins wrote. 'The past 4 years have been incredibly life changing and has led me to say that I'm looking forward to entering the 2025 NFL Draft!!!' Collins wrapped up his college career with a solid performance in the College Football Playoff National Championship, catching four passes for 32 yards in Notre Dame's 34-23 loss to Ohio State. During his lone season at Notre Dame, Collins ranked third on the team in receptions (41) and second in receiving yards (490). He also tied for second in touchdown catches, including a key 13-yard score in the Irish's Sugar Bowl win over Georgia in the CFP Quarterfinal.
