Collectibles shop loses more than $100K worth of Pokémon cards in burglary

A Massachusetts collectibles shop is preparing to reopen after more than $100,000 worth of Pokémon cards were stolen last week, a store owner says. Between $110,000 and $130,000 worth of individual first edition and boxed Pokémon cards were stolen from 1st Edition Collectibles, a toy and game shop in New Bedford, Massachusetts, on Tuesday, July 8, co-owner Will Gilmour told USA TODAY. A person broke into the store at around 2:30 a.m. local time, shoving the high-priced items inside a backpack before making his escape. 1st Edition Collectibles specializes in collectible trading card games, with an emphasis on Pokémon. Gilmour said the shop also sells figurines, like Funko Pops, vintage video games and consoles, and sports trading cards. After being closed for more than a week to clean up and install a new security system, 1st Edition Collectibles is reopening on Friday, July 18. The re-opening coincides with the release of the new Pokémon trading card deck "Scarlet & Violet – Black Bolt" and "Scarlet & Violet – White Flare," which the shop is celebrating. As of Wednesday, July 16, the burglary remained under investigation and no arrests had been made, New Bedford Police Department Media Relations Specialist Holly Huntoon told USA TODAY. Police: Man stabbed with 'broken shards of glass' after fight over Pokemon cards The following items were stolen from 1st Edition Collectibles, per the shop's social media: 'I need this': Fans react as Lego and Pokémon announce new partnership starting in 2026 Even if you're not in Massachusetts, there are ways to help. Gilmour said each Pokémon card is issued a certification, or serial, number, which can be used to identify a specific card. 1st Edition Collectibles provided the following certification numbers for the stolen merchandise: All certified cards can be searched on the Professional Sports Authenticator website. The stolen cards have been deactivated on the website, Gilmour said, to indicate they are missing. The best way to identify the box sets is by their wrappings, if they have not been opened, Gilmour said. "I like to think of those wraps as fingerprints because the wrap has the Wizard of the Coast (a role-playing game publisher) logo on them and every box is unique because that wrap has a different placement on it," he added. "If you look up a picture of our box versus the same box, you'll see the logos maybe shifted a little bit on the wrapper just for the nature of how it was wrapped." And finally, Gilmour said the stolen cards were rare, not ones an average collector would have. If a rare card comes across your desk, make sure to inquire where it came from, he advised. To make light of the loss and help recover financially, 1st Edition Collectibles has released two t-shirts under what the shop has deemed "The Comeback Collection." One of the shirts sports Pokémon character Officer Jenny with the words "Crime Doesn't Pay." The other features the Pokémon Charizard holding a golden goblet that reads: "Chasing Grails." Both shirts are $35 each, and all of the proceeds will go back to recovery. "We figured with all the exposure, this would be a good time to put something out there for the community to really show their support, help us recover financially to be able to put this back into revamping the security systems, revamping – we've got to fix the door, we have to recover inventory losses – and really possibly considering moving," Gilmour said. Gilmour opened 1st Edition Collectibles along with high school friends, Filipe Andre and Sean Vieira, about four and a half years ago. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when trading card games saw an uptick in sales because of the lockdown, the trio also reconnected with a "nostalgic feeling from when we were (children) and opening packs and things like that," he said. "After collecting for a couple of years that way and really finding a love and passion for the hobby, (we) decided to make a little passion project and open up the store ourselves," Gilmour added. Despite the recent financial loss, Gilmour said the support the shop has received, locally and nationwide, has been tremendous. "The community outreach, it's been the silver lining throughout this whole process," Gilmour said. "It's just seeing everybody reaching out, supporting us, sharing their stories, offering advice, guidance, tips. It's good to see that we are so well loved within the community and that everything that we've been doing for the last four and a half, five years has really touched so many people that they're willing to support us like this."

Underage drinking party may have preceded Bedford teen's death, chief says

The 17-year-old Bedford High School junior who died in a motor vehicle incident Sunday had been at a party where there may have been underage drinking, police said. The teenage boy, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at a local hospital after police and emergency responders went to Wallace Road around 8:15 p.m. following a report of a person jumping out of a car near Stagecoach Lane. The circumstances that led to the boy's death are still unclear though, Bedford Police Chief Daniel Douidi said in a statement Wednesday afternoon. 'A preliminary investigation indicates that the student, a 17-year-old male, exited a moving vehicle under unclear circumstances while traveling on Wallace Road,' Douidi said. 'The incident appears to have followed a social gathering that may have involved underage drinking. We are and have been investigating the circumstances surrounding the gathering, including any potential violations of the law.' The name of the driver of the car involved in the incident has not been released. Douidi said it was with 'great sadness' that he confirmed the incident that led to the death of the local teenager, the third teen killed in a Bedford motor vehicle incident over a 49-day stretch. Lauren Souza, a 16-year-old Trinity High School junior from Bedford, was killed in a crash early Easter morning on April 20. On May 28, a Manchester 13-year-old died in a crash at the Kilton Road exit off Route 101. 'The Bedford Police Department is working closely with the School District and community leaders to support students and staff during this difficult time,' Douidi said. Bedford High Principal Bob Jozokos sent a letter to parents first thing Monday informing them that a student had died and that resources were available for students at the school. The investigation is ongoing. Police have not said if any arrests have been made or are imminent. 'Our hearts are with the family, friends, and entire school community mourning this tragic loss. We urge everyone, especially parents, to understand the life-threatening risks associated with underage drinking and gatherings that are not properly supervised. No parent should have to face the loss of a child under these circumstances,' Douidi said. Anyone who may have seen anything on Wallace Road leading up to the incident can call the Bedford Police Department at 603-472-5113. dpierce@

Children driving stolen ride-share car crash, killing 13-year-old New England boy, police say

A 13-year-old boy was killed and a 14-year-old girl was seriously hurt in a crash involving a car that was reported stolen in New Hampshire early Wednesday morning. The crash happened in Bedford at around 1:50 a.m. at the on-ramp of Route 101, according to the Bedford Police Department. The car involved in the crash, a 2014 Toyota Corolla, had rolled over after it exited the on-ramp onto Kilton Road, police said. Both the 13-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl were ejected from the car. The children were the only people in the car at the time of the crash, the department said. The boy, who was from Manchester, New Hampshire, was brought to a local hospital and later pronounced dead. The girl — also from Manchester — was brought to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. A preliminary investigation into the crash showed neither child had been wearing seatbelts, and the Toyota Corolla was reported stolen earlier from a ride-share and delivery driver in Manchester, police said. The investigation into the crash is ongoing by the Bedford Police Department. The crash caused the on and off ramps to be closed for a period of time until Wednesday morning. Man arrested in brutal assault of bride-to-be on bachelorette outing in Dallas

A man has been arrested in connection with the violent beating of a woman who was celebrating her bachelorette weekend in Dallas last week. Canada Rinaldi, 27, was visiting Texas with friends when a man she did not know attacked her in the early-morning hours on March 23, police said. The Dallas Police Department identified the suspect as Trevon Woodards. Police said Woodards was arrested on Friday by the Bedford Police Department, a jurisdiction in the suburbs outside of Dallas. Rinaldi told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that she and her friends came down from Oklahoma to host her bachelorette weekend in the city. Her wedding is in a month, and Rinaldi now has a concussion, a broken nose, three broken teeth and eight stitches on her face. Kelly Peralta, an aunt of Rinaldi's fiancé, told NBC DFW that the group was leaving a club and walking across the street to an Uber when they were blindsided by a man. 'We started walking across the street to get into the Uber, and that's when he came from behind and he punched Canada, and she went straight down, and I turned to push him away, and that's when he got me,' Peralta said. Peralta had a black eye following the assault. A GoFundMe for Rinaldi said the bride-to-be has more than $10,000 in medical expenses between the cost of the ambulance and the hospital stay. The crowdfunding campaign raised nearly $20,000 by Sunday. 'We are so incredibly grateful for every single donation, share, and kind message,' her friend wrote on the page. 'Your generosity and support mean the world and have brought so much comfort during such a difficult time.' Court records for Woodards in the case were not immediately available. Inmate records show he remained in custody as of Sunday afternoon and it is unclear if he has retained an attorney. Dallas County court records show Woodards was charged with felony assault in September 2021, but pleaded guilty to a lesser misdemeanor charge. A police report filed in the 2021 case said that Woodards had interfered with the arrest of an individual with felony warrants, demanding to 'know what was going on.' He was told by officers to back up three times before Woodards grabbed an officer's shirt and head and 'began to eye gouge' the officer, the report said. Officers shocked Woodards with a stun gun and arrested him, the police report said. He was sentenced to a year of community service and appears to have spent 10 days in jail for a violation on his probation in February, according to court records.
