It's the year of adult sports leagues
Team sports have become one of the fastest-growing types of exercise, with 20% of U.S. adults — up from 11% in 2020 — now saying they play them, according to a CivicScience survey shared with Axios. Why it matters: Rec leagues help you stay active and socially connected. What we're hearing: Getting outside with friends (and without screens) has become especially important to younger adults, says Galen Beers, executive director of the Sport & Social Industry Association. "No one's going out of business because people aren't playing. In fact, it's the opposite," Beers tells Axios. State of play: Volleyball (30% of total players), soccer (18%) and softball (15%) were the most popular sports last year, per preliminary data from the trade group, which counts roughly 150 leagues as members. The big picture: Just over half of adults get the recommended 150 minutes of cardio exercise each week, per the latest CDC analysis. And many report feeling lonely, which brings its own serious health risks. Zoom in: "The social aspect is just as important as the sport itself," says Rachel Hogan, who works with clubs in Austin, Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio and Minneapolis. Players are often new to the city or looking to meet people outside of work, she tells Axios. Some even find romance on the field. One league has been dubbed the "best dating app" in Denver. Between the lines: A rec sports renaissance could help rebuild the fraying community bonds that political scientist Robert Putnam warned about in "Bowling Alone." Reality check: Solo time still has its rewards. Hobbies like knitting and solo camping are also on the rise, in part for their mental health benefits. 💭 My thought bubble: I joined a kickball team with friends this spring and found it delightful to jockey against fellow Austinites whom I'd probably never meet otherwise.

Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers reflect on 20 years of Shondaland
Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers aren't just aspirational goals, they're also friendship goals. From "Scandal" and "How to Get Away With Murder" to " Bridgerton," the duo have worked together over the past 20 years to tell bold, inclusive stories. To commemorate the milestone, Rhimes and Beers sat down with "Good Morning America" co-anchor Robin Roberts to reflect on the projects they've worked on together, which have left a lasting impact on audiences across the world, specifically their first show, " Grey's Anatomy." "I feel like we made a lot of mistakes," Rhimes said about the series. "Not in a bad -- like, I don't feel any of the mistakes -- were a problem. Whatever came from those mistakes turned out to be fantastic." Beers added, "We were the last show picked up and we were mid-season. What did we have to lose? Because no one was paying any attention." Beers said at the time that "Grey's Anatomy" first premiered in March 2005 on ABC, it was also the year of "Desperate Housewives" and "Lost," which she added were "already two big megahits." Despite the apprehension they shared before diving into the series, "Grey's Anatomy" became the longest-running medical drama in American TV history. "For me, that's a really personal feeling to feel like I've made something up and people are embracing it in this way," Rhimes said about how the show has been received by audiences. Rhimes echoed Beers' sentiments about the show and said how "amazed" she is by how people have told her that it's "helped them save somebody in their family's life." "It happens a lot," she said. "I'm also amazed at how many young women can say they were gonna go into the sciences or they're doctors," she added. "It was because of Meredith Grey, which is amazing." Rhimes and Beers teamed up out of a shared frustration toward the television industry. Beers said at the time, they noticed a "gap" in television. "We didn't see anything that looked or acted like us," she said. Rhimes said, "There were no women who felt like real women on television at that point in time." She added, "We were like, 'Where are all the competitive, mean-spirited, fun, well-meaning women out there?" With "Grey's Anatomy" rewriting the rules of primetime, the duo expanded the "Shondaverse" with more shows, including "Scandal," "How to Get Away With Murder," "Station 19," " Bridgerton" and "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story." All are led by women protagonists. When it comes to choosing the next story, Rhimes and Beers said that timing matters. "I feel like right now we're tryin' to mine a lot more joy and a lot more enjoyment," Rhimes said. "Because I feel like people want to escape a little bit from the realities of eggs being too high and all kinds of other things." Beers added that whatever the next project is, she knows it will include a lot of "fun."

Pierce County man sentenced in ‘high-volume' drug redistribution tied to prison gangs
A Pierce County man described as a 'high-volume' drug redistributor for the leader of a drug distribution ring tied to white supremacist prison gangs was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court in Tacoma. Gregory Beers, 32, of Edgewood, received a total of 12.5 years in prison from U.S. District Court Judge David G. Estudillo. 'This is a very serious crime,' said at sentencing, according to a news release from the Acting U.S. Attorney's Office. 'It involved thousands and thousands of fentanyl pills, which wreak havoc on our community. There are people literally dying from these drugs and it leaves a wake of destruction for those who survive.' According to federal prosecutors, Beers was a high-volume drug redistributor for Jesse James Bailey, the leader of one of three branches of the drug distribution organizations tied to two Aryan prison gangs. On March 22, 2023, law enforcement made two dozen arrests on federal charges. Law enforcement seized 177 firearms, more than 10 kilos of methamphetamine, 11 kilos of fentanyl pills and more than a kilo of fentanyl powder, three kilos of heroin, and over $330,000 in cash from 18 locations in Washington and Arizona. 'Earlier in the investigation, law enforcement seized 830,000 fentanyl pills, 5.5 pounds of fentanyl powder, 223 pounds of methamphetamine, 3.5 pounds of heroin, 5 pounds of cocaine, $388,000 in cash, and 48 firearms,' the release noted. Prosecutors say Beers fled his residence on March 23, leaving behind drugs, cash, body armor and firearms. Law enforcement said that the residence contained heroin, fentanyl, methamphetamine and detailed drug ledgers. Police also found guns as well as bullet-proof vests in two of the bedrooms, digital scales, ammunition and nearly $5,000 in cash. Inside Beers' Mercedes, agents found more weapons and ammunition, as well as two Kevlar ballistic vests, and small bags of heroin and fentanyl powder. The trunk held another handgun and a bag of bullets, law enforcement said. Beers was arrested on April 11, 2023, after being found living in an RV parked at a Tacoma home and dealing narcotics, according to prosecutors. 'Even after seeing that his co-conspirators were arrested and knowing that he too was sought by police, Gregory Beers continued his drug trafficking, arming himself with guns,' Acting U.S. Attorney Teal Luthy Miller said in a statement. 'He was arrested with two firearms, $7,000 in cash and some $36,000 worth of jewelry that he would wear around his neck — all proceeds of drug trafficking.' Last June, Beers pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. In asking the court for the 12.5-year prison term, prosecutors noted that Beers was blatant about his drug dealing. 'Beers flaunted his drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession, sending videos of his firearms and drug proceeds to (Department of Corrections) inmates,' prosecutors wrote to the court. 'All of this was done for the purpose of his own personal enrichment, including his purchase of expensive jewelry.' According to Friday's release, three connected drug rings in the case were identified over an 18-month wiretap investigation. The three distribution rings were working together as the Aryan Family/Omerta Drug Trafficking Organization, the release stated, one of which was led by Beers' co-defendant Jesse Bailey. Bailey has pleaded guilty and is scheduled for sentencing on July 2, the release added.
