The trial will take place at the Lusikisiki Magistrate's Court under a special sitting of the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court. This follows the horrific events of 28 September 2024, when 18 people were gunned down at two neighbouring homesteads in Ngobozana Village, near the rural town of Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed this week that eight weeks have been set aside for the trial, which is expected to run until 19 September 2025. NPA regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said all six accused will face multiple serious charges. The accused — Mzukisi Ndamase, Siphosoxolo Myekethe, Aphiwe 'AP' Ndende, Bonga Hintsa, Mawethu Nomdlembu, and Songezo Vuma — are facing 18 counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of prohibited firearms, and illegal possession of weapons and ammunition. 'These six individuals have all since abandoned their bail applications and will remain in custody throughout the trial,' said Tyali. IOL News

Sewage updates across Kingsburgh and Amanzimtoti

WARD 97 councillor, André Beetge, said most of the sewage complaints in Kingsburgh and Amanzimtoti have now been resolved, following physical oversight visits conducted last week. He added that all reported issues were inspected and, in most cases, resolved or in the process of being addressed. Also read: Lower Illovo resident endures sewage nightmare Kingsburgh A temporary sewage line has been installed along Thomas Holstead Drive, where a manhole was washed away during recent storms. 'The temporary line will remain in place while the damaged manhole is being rebuilt,' said Beetge. Doon Heights Two breaks in the pipeline between Mopani and Camelsfoot streets, which were causing effluent to flow towards Valley Road and into the Little Amanzimtoti River, have also been repaired. Amanzimtoti The wastewater department is attending to a damaged line between the Topham Road and Chain Rocks pump stations. This section runs along George Glendennen Alley, next to the railway line. Beetge confirmed that progress is being made. 'Teams are on the ground and working to complete repairs to the damaged infrastructure,' he said. Also read: South Coast Sun 25 July 2025 In another area of Amanzimtoti, the sewage line along Bernadotte Street that was washed away during recent storms, has been replaced. New concrete pedestals have also been installed to replace those that previously supported the line. Illovo Beach In Illovo Beach, a blocked manhole that caused sewage to spill into a nearby nursery has been cleared. 'This is a recurring issue caused by foreign matter such as rags, nappies and sanitary pads being flushed into a system that was never designed to handle anything beyond human waste and toilet paper,' explained Beetge. While chlorine and lime have been used to disinfect affected waterways, Beetge cautioned that odours may linger. 'There might still be a smell until the next proper downpour flushes the system completely,' he said. For more South Coast Sun news, follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Pipe repair at Lewis Drive underway

A BURST on a 360mm trunk water main pipe along Lewis Drive in Amanzimtoti has left large parts of the area without water, with repair efforts still underway this afternoon (July 21). Also read: Check water outage times in Amanzimtoti and surrounds According to Ward 97 councillor André Beetge, the outlets from the Lewis Drive reservoir had to be closed on Sunday to allow for the replacement of the damaged section. 'Unfortunately, draining the system took longer than anticipated. Crews have now exposed most of the damaged pipe, but due to its location on a T-piece, they've had to continue excavation by hand,' said Beetge. A replacement pipe has been sourced, and repair teams remain on-site. Beetge said they have requested municipal management to prioritise the repairs, as the outage affects a wide area, with added pressure from the scheduled night-time water shutdown and the reopening of schools on Monday. 'We understand the frustration from the community and are pushing to get the supply restored as quickly as possible,' he said. Check water outage times in Amanzimtoti and surrounds

SOME southern areas may be without water overnight (July 17) as a result of the extended closure of the South Coast Augmentation (SCA) pipeline to replace a faulty pump. Also read: South Coast water shutdown announced Ward 97 councillor, André Beetge, said the SCA will be switched off for an additional two hours from 21:00 to 05:00 tonight. 'This replacement should suffice in addressing the continued outages experienced in areas further south of the Amanzimtoti Water Works,' said Beetge. He added that this will result in an extended water outage on July 18 as well, while the system recovers and storage is built. Amanzimtoti Main Beach opens for swimming

WARD 97 councillor André Beetge has announced that Amanzimtoti Main Beach has opened for bathing following the conclusion of the annual Sardine Run. Also read: Swimming ban lifted at Toti and Pipeline During the Sardine Run, the Natal Sharks Board removes shark nets to allow for the sardines to commute freely. The sardines are usually accompanied by a host of predators, including sharks, dolphins, and birds, which makes swimming unsafe. Beetge said the Natal Sharks Board have confirmed that all devices are back in position at Amanzimtoti Main Beach and as a result, the beach is open for bathing from today (July 17). 'Note that this presently only applies to Amanzimtoti Main Beach. The other southern beaches are still closed for bathing,' said Beetge.
