Belen Jesuit's water polo team is the Leo Suarez-Walter Krietsch Courage Award recipient

The Belen Jesuit water polo team suffered an unthinkable tragedy this past season. Sophomore Lucas Osuna, 15, died suddenly on March 28 during a tournament at Ransom Everglades School in Coconut Grove. Osuna's death, which was later reported as having been caused by a spontaneous rupture of the aorta potentially linked to an undiagnosed genetic condition, shook not just the Belen community, but the South Florida water polo community as a whole. Many rallied to show their support for the Wolverines as they tried to move forward. Belen's team found the resilience to not just cope with its immeasurable loss, but to play on and complete their season. Every season, the Miami Herald salutes an individual or individuals in the South Florida high school sports community, which shows extraordinary courage in the face of adversity with its annual Leo Suarez/Walter Krietsch Courage Award. This year's recipient is the Belen Jesuit water polo team. The award is named in honor of two former Miami Herald editors, who passed away before their time, but showed extraordinary courage in the face of adversity. Such as the case with the Wolverines, who roughly a week after Osuna's death, returned to the pool at nearby Gulliver Prep School. 'We got together with the kids and asked them what they wanted to do,' Belen coach Jimmy Aguilera said at the time. 'Did they want to honor [Osuna] by playing or some other way? We were going to proceed the way they felt was right. They decided to keep going as far as we can make it. Right now, it's not about the results of the games. It's about being there for each other.' Belen met as a team and chose to continue its season. The Wolverines honored Osuna's memory prior to, during and after their first game back. Belen players wore his name and No. 19 on their competition swim caps during the match. Their reserve players held a picture of Osuna as they cheered their teammates in the pool during the match. Coaches and parents wore yellow T-shirts with Osuna's name and swim cap painted on the back as well as caps with the No. 19 on them. A moment of silence was held just prior to the match starting. Osuna's name was displayed on the scoreboard on the far side of the pool. The team posed for a picture in front of the scoreboard with a sign filled with written tributes and the number 19 written large in the middle. They presented Osuna's parents, Mike and Jeanette, with a pair of framed collages with pictures of their son and his swim caps. And in that game, they scored 19 goals in a shutout win over Coral Gables. In their next game, Belen again scored 19 goals and won its district championship after a 19-18 win over Ransom Everglades. The Wolverines' season would finish a week later in the regional semifinals after a 16-15 overtime loss to Ransom. But what mattered most to them was playing on to honor Osuna's memory. 'The whole situation put life into perspective,' Belen athletic director Laz Fernandez said in April. 'These kids' willingness to keep playing demonstrates their desire to fight for Lucas and that's very resilient and very admirable.'

Belen Jesuit's Tiago Socarras is the Miami-Dade Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year

Early in his career, Belen Jesuit's Tiago Socarras was more concerned with individual accolades than team accomplishments. But as he progressed through his running career, Socarras became more of a leader while developing into one of the top distance runners in the state of Florida. That's what made his senior season extra special. Not only did Socarras finish his final meet in a Wolverines uniform with a pair of individual state titles, he played a vital role in helping Belen Jesuit secure a long sought after team state championship. Socarras, who is headed to the University of Pennsylvania this fall, is the Miami Herald's Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year for Miami-Dade County. Socarras, a key contributor on the Belen cross-country team in recent years, has been a part of multiple state team titles in that sport. But winning team titles in track and field is less common at Belen. That changed last month when Socarras' victories in the 800 and 1,600 meter races at state helped the Wolverines secure their first state team championship since 2007. 'It was really special and the team title meant even more than any other individual title,' Socarras said. 'The double was pretty special too and the experience was great. It was amazing and the greatest way to cap a high school career.' Socarras ran a time of 1:52.27 to win the 800 meter race at the Class 3A meet. He dominated the event during the season, and ran the fastest time in the state this season in the event in April at the Arcadia Invitational (1:47.66). Socarras won the 1,600 meters earlier in the meet with a time of 4:10.11. His successful track season followed a strong performance in cross-country. At state in November, Socarras finished third individually and ran a season-best time of 15:12 in the 5K race. Next, Socarras will try to carry over what he learned from his experiences at Belen to the track and cross-country programs at Penn while studying finance. 'I'm definitely excited because academically it's an amazing school,' said Socarras, who had previously been recruited by multiple programs including Duke. 'So far in track and field, they haven't done too much, but hoping to go up and change that.'

Belen Jesuit's Marco Prieguez is the Miami-Dade Boys' Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Belen Jesuit's cross-country and track and field programs have a longstanding tradition of excellence. But over the years, several of the members of each squad show their strength not just when they're putting in the miles, but in the classroom as well. Belen senior Marco Prieguez is another perfect example of this combination. Prieguez has been a standout on the Wolverines' cross-country and track teams throughout his high school career. The highlight came this season, however, as he was finally able to enjoy not just a team state championship in the fall in cross-country, but a state title in track earlier this month. While Prieguez has been impressive when it comes to running, he's even more so academically. And that's a big reason he's this year's Miami Herald Miami-Dade County Boys' Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Prieguez was a first team All-Dade selection in cross-country after finishing fifth individually at the state Class 3A meet with a time of 15:36. His season-best time was also impressive as he ran a time of 15:23. He finished sixth at state in the 1,600 meters in track and field helping Belen win the team title. He did all of this while maintaining an impressive 5.515 grade point average, scoring a 1490 on the SAT and a 34 on the ACT. His stellar academic resume helped him earn an opportunity to attend the prestigious University of Pennsylvania, joining a long line of Wolverines athletes to enroll at Ivy League schools. Prieguez has been part of three consecutive state titles in cross-country since joining the team as a sophomore. An honors student, AP Scholar with Distinction and a member of five National Honor Societies, Prieguez also participated in numerous community service activities including the Fundacion Hermanos De La Calle, which translated to English reads 'Brothers from the Street Foundation' where he continuously prepared and delivered homemade food to the homeless or recently homeless, and created a focus group to discuss issues affecting individuals experiencing homelessness and how to target these issues in everyday life.

Lucas Osuna was with fellow students on the Belen varsity team when he unexpectedly died Friday during the Ransom Everglades Invitational, an annual regular-season tournament. READ MORE: Belen Jesuit student dies at water polo tournament, officials say. What we know Lucas' family asked Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, a longtime friend of Lucas' father, to be their spokesperson as they mourn a heavy loss. In that role, Suarez said Lucas had a spontaneous rupture of the aorta potentially linked to an undiagnosed genetic condition. His family also wanted to ensure Lucas' death does not 'discourage other children from participating in youth athletics. They emphasize that they were unaware of the underlying condition and continue to seek answers through further medical review,' the statement read.' 'They are people of deep faith, and they're leaning on that faith—and each other—to get through the unimaginable,' Suarez said. Earlier this week, Suarez posted condolences to Instagram: 'Lucas was the eldest son of my dear friend Mike, whom I've known for years through our time training together in Coconut Grove. My heart breaks for him and his family.'
