Yankees Explored Cody Bellinger Trade After Aaron Judge Injury News: Report

The New York Yankees could opt for a dramatic change of course as their hot start to the season is a distant memory, while they hit a skid before the trade deadline. After seizing first place in the American League East to open the year, the Yankees have gone 15-24 since mid-June and now will be without franchise slugger Aaron Judge for the foreseeable future. The team placed Judge on the injured list so he can recover from an elbow issue and that loss forced the team to consider trading away two of its most productive veterans. "We have since learned through league sources that last week the Yanks brought up Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt in talks with at least one other club," according to Andy Martino of SNY. At that time, the Yankees likely feared they'd lost Judge for the season. That could have quickly turned them into sellers. But Judge is expected to come back at some point, though he could be limited to a designated hitter role. Bellinger signed a three-year, $80 million deal with the Chicago Cubs and after arriving via trade with the Yankees he has the chance to opt out of that deal at the end of this season. He has slashed a formidable .281/.333/.507 while playing great defense this season and seems likely to exercise that opt out and seek a longer-term deal in the winter. By reportedly considering a trade, the Yankees don't seem optimistic about their chances of keeping Bellinger who has a player option for 2026. And they could be ready to move on to a different outfield mix next year, with Jasson Dominguez, Trent Grisham and prospect Spencer Jones all candidates for everyday spots. In any case, it now seems unlikely the Yankees will trade Bellinger away with Judge likely to return and their playoff hopes still alive.
