Blue Jays get early jump on Brayan Bello in series opener and Red Sox come up empty in sixth straight loss
The Sox lineup lacked a single player with an OPS of .800 or better who can carry them, and was weighted down by four hitters with an OPS under .600. The result? The team managed just four hits, and has now managed only 28 runs over 10 games since the Devers deal. Friday night marked the second time since the trade that the club has been shut out, and the sixth that it was held to fewer than three runs — a nearly impossible formula for victory. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The Red Sox played from behind the entire game, as Brayan Bello's season continued to puzzle. The Red Sox need him to emerge as a mid-rotation force in order to remain afloat with a thinned post-Devers lineup, and the 26-year-old had shown recent progress in that regard entering Friday. Advertisement In his prior two starts, Bello had allowed three runs (one earned) while striking out 14 in 13 innings. Those outings offered a reminder of his ingredients to be a solid No. 3 or 4 starter. Advertisement Yet inconsistent execution this year has made it difficult for Bello to cement that status — particularly in one situation that should serve as a prelude to dominance. Bello's inability to generate consistent swing-and-miss stuff and put hitters away has made him vulnerable even after putting hitters in 0-2 holes. Entering Friday, opponents were hitting .348/.388/.522 against him after falling into such counts — a worst-in-baseball departure from the league-wide average of .164/.198/.248. That shortcoming continued in costly fashion against the Blue Jays. In the first inning, Bello got two quick outs but then allowed a single to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. After getting ahead of Alejandro Kirk, 0-2, Bello issued a nine-pitch walk to the catcher — a reflection of both Bello's inability to miss bats and Kirk's remarkable batting skill. George Springer followed by lining an RBI single to center field, putting the Red Sox in a 1-0 hole in what eventually became a 30-pitch first inning. In the second, Bello put leadoff hitter Ernie Clement in an 0-2 hole — and eventually walked him. Clement came around to score. One inning later, Clement singled home another run to put the Blue Jays ahead, 3-0, after three innings. That was all that Bello allowed over his 104 pitches (60 for strikes; 58 percent rate). He settled in to give the Sox six innings, allowing the three runs on eight hits (all singles) while walking three. The outing marked Bello's fifth straight quality start, a span during which he has a 2.87 ERA — a solid stretch, and one during which he's been able to keep the Sox in games even as they claw for runs. Still, his one strikeout of a Blue Jay offered a reminder that there's another level for the pitcher to unlock. Advertisement Dominance by Bello might not have been enough to alter this outcome, partly because the bullpen behind him faceplanted while allowing six runs after Bello's egress (two charged to Luis Guerrero in the seventh, and a four-run, four-walk albatross hung upon Brennan Bernardino in the eighth), and more significantly, because the lineup once again looked like warm butter to the sharp knife of an opposing pitcher. Berríos cruised through seven scoreless innings in just 91 pitches. He allowed just four hits, walked one, and struck out eight. Just two Red Sox baserunners reached second base, none after the fifth inning. The team is hitting .184 in its last 10 contests. Alex Speier can be reached at

Death toll from rain-fuelled landslide in Colombia rises to 11
At least 11 people have been killed and 15 remain missing after a landslide in the city of Bello in Colombia's northwest, according to authorities. Evacuation orders and rescue efforts continue a day after the landslide, with government officials warning that heavy rains pose an ongoing threat to the area around Medellin, Colombia's second-largest city. 'We continue to support emergency and rescue work in Bello, where 11 people have sadly been reported killed, at least 15 are missing, and more than 1,500 people are in shelters,' Medellin Mayor Federico Gutierrez said in a social media post on Wednesday. Floodwaters overwhelmed local waterways on Tuesday during the early morning hours while residents were asleep. A wave of mud surged through Bello, a crowded community in the hills above Medellin, burying about a dozen homes, sweeping away cars and leaving behind piles of debris. Rescue workers have used dogs, drones and other means to search for the missing. Shelters have been set up in local schools and community centres. Heavy rains pose especially high risks for makeshift homes built into the hillsides, which can become unstable during periods of sustained rainfall. It is often the country's poorer residents who live in these danger zones, many of them having fled conflict in Colombia's rural areas for the relative safety of a city. The Medellin town hall also issued evacuation orders for Villatina, also on the outskirts of Medellin, on Tuesday, stating that 23 buildings would be demolished due to the risk of possible collapse. The town hall says that the order was based on previous landslides during late May, and that the risk posed by the insecure structures has been aggravated by recent heavy rain. Around 60 homes were also ordered evacuated in Medellin, which suffered damage during recent storms.

At least 11 dead after landslide buries homes in northwest Colombia
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — At least 11 people have been killed in a landslide in northwestern Colombia, local authorities said on Wednesday, a day after heavy rains unleashed the wall of mud and debris on crowded neighborhoods and buried some dozen homes. Rescue workers continued to dig through the rubble and search for survivors in Colombia's second-largest city of Medellin and the nearby mountainous town of Bello, where at least 15 people remain missing. Authorities in Bello swiftly transformed schools and community centers, even a swimming pool, into shelters that quickly filled with over 1,300 people who lost or couldn't access their homes as a result of flooding, said Mayor Lorena González Ospina. The overall death toll from the landslide increased to 11, said Federico Gutiérrez, mayor of Medellin, as emergency workers in Bello pressed on with search and rescue efforts using dogs, drones and other tools. His office ordered the immediate evacuation of over 60 homes in Medellin that had suffered structural damage. Landslides are common in this verdant area of Colombia, especially during the rainy season from April to November, when downpours loosen the soil. Floodwaters from almost two consecutive days of torrential rainfall caused streams to overflow Tuesday morning while most residents were sleeping. The resulting flood surged through the cities, carrying tons of debris and sweeping away cars and other personal belongings. Colombia's Weather Service predicted light rains on Wednesday, far less extreme than those that hit the region earlier this week. ____ Follow AP's coverage of Latin America and the Caribbean at

Yankees blanked by Red Sox to cap miserable sweep as Aaron Judge finally cools off
Access the Yankees beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Greg Joyce about the inside buzz on the Yankees. Try it free BOSTON — At this point, the Yankees may just have to call the Red Sox their Daddy. The best thing they had going for them by the time they headed back to New York was that they did not have to see the Red Sox again until August. A dud of a weekend mercifully came to a close late Sunday afternoon, but not before the Yankees offered one last whimper on Father's Day as they were blanked by the Red Sox 2-0 and got swept out of Fenway Park. Facing the Red Sox (37-36) on back-to-back weekends, the Yankees (42-28) dropped five of six and seemingly gave life to their rival's season. In The Bronx, it was their pitching that failed them. At Fenway, it was their lifeless bats, plus a costly baserunning miscue in each of the past two games. The Yankees arrived in Boston on Friday coming off a sweep of the Royals that lifted them a season-high 17 games above .500. They left having scored four runs in three games. 4 Yankees DH Aaron Judge reacts after striking out in the third inning against the Red Sox on June 15, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Brayan Bello became the latest Red Sox starter to stifle the Yankees, firing seven shutout innings with eight strikeouts while scattering just three hits. In 21 ¹/₃ innings against Red Sox starters this weekend — Garrett Crochet, Hunter Dobbins and Bello — the Yankees mustered just one run, which was Aaron Judge's ninth-inning home run Friday night. That proved to be Judge's only hit of the weekend as the red-hot slugger finally cooled off for a weekend, going 1-for-12 with nine strikeouts and grounded into a double play that killed a rally in the eighth inning Sunday. 4 Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. (l.) reacts toward home plate umpire Chris Conroy (r.) after striking out looking in the sixth inning against the Red Sox on June 15, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST 4 The Yankees' Ben Rice reacts after flying out in the fifth inning against the Red Sox on June 15, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST But the Yankees could not pick up their best player. Their best chance of scoring off Bello came in the third inning, when they had runners on first and second with two outs and Jazz Chisholm Jr. at the plate. But Ben Rice took too big of a lead off second base as he appeared to possibly be taking off on the pitch, except Bello never started his windup and instead threw to second to eventually pick off Rice to escape the jam. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS It was all too similar to Jasson Domínguez getting caught flat-footed between second and third to kill a rally on Saturday night, when the rookie outfielder forgot how many strikes there were. The Yankees' weekend at Fenway Park was so rough not even Max Fried — who had been the definition of a stopper when pitching after a loss — could save them from a sweep, though that had less to do with his pitching than that he could not also pick up a bat. Fried gave up two runs across seven innings, but that was enough to take the loss — his first when pitching with the Yankees coming off a loss. 4 Red Sox starter Brayan Bello pitches against the Yankees on June 15, 2025. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST As they did all weekend, the Red Sox struck first. In the bottom of the first, after Fried had erased Anthony Volpe's fielding error by inducing a double play, Romy Gonzalez extended the inning with a triple to right field. Trevor Story blooped a single to left to bring him in for the 1-0 lead. Rafael Devers doubled the lead in the fifth inning, sneaking a solo home run just over the Green Monster.
