There's only like one goat, but there's goats—the whole herd of goats,'' he said. "I would take Aaron (Rogers) in his prime over Patrick right now,'' he said. Advertisement The eye test certainly showcases Rodgers' brilliance from his prime years and he remains a cemented great at the quarterback position despite a whacky spiral over the last few years. Perhaps there is some success fatigue with regard to Mahomes' accomplishments as well. Regardless, Mahomes continues to make any argument against him all the more difficult with each passing season. Not even a decade into his career, Mahomes has earned a place at the table of legends with more room to add to a laundry list of accolades. The success before and amid his prime is undeniable. One could perhaps squint and see some merit to where Roethlisberger's coming from here. But it is still a difficult argument to make against Mahomes who may have even better days ahead which would be a scary sight for the rest of the league. McCoy's explosive rant certainly pulls too and glosses over the greatness of Roethlisberger's era. The Steelers were one of the more staunch opponents of the unmatched New England Patriots dynasty commanded by Brady. His greatness even stifled Mannings legacy, holding him to two Super Bowls in his extensive career. Roethlisberger may not have the individual accolades of the others of his time, but he still managed to claim two Super Bowl victories of his own, leading Pittsburgh to triumphs in Super Bowl XL and Super Bowl XLIII. In comparison McCoy does boast a more accomplished individual resumé and two Super Bowls. However, Roethlisberger played an active role in his career apex moments whereas McCoy leeched his rings as a spectator from the sidelines at the tail-end of his career. During his heyday with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers was among the most feared signal-callers in the league; between 2011 and 2021, he was named NFL MVP four times. During this span, he led the NFL in touchdown passes twice, and he boasted the league's lowest interception rate five times. However, Rodgers' lone Super Bowl win (to date) occurred in 2010, right as he emerged as an elite player. In only seven seasons as the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback, Mahomes has already played in five Super Bowls, with three victories to his name. Mahomes, a two-time MVP, had a "down" year in 2024 despite the Chiefs' 15-2 record. Mahomes failed to crack the 4,000-yard mark for the first time since his rookie season, but he led the NFL in game-winning drives and fourth-quarter comebacks will winning another AFC championship. At 29 years old, Mahomes already has racked up more playoff victories (17) than Rodgers (11) has in his entire career. But Roethlisberger, an icon in Pittsburgh, still thinks prime Rodgers was better than the current iteration of Mahomes. Advertisement "Patrick Mahomes is just now entering out of his prime, I think," Roethlisberger said Wednesday on his podcast. "He'll go down as another arguable GOAT. But I think Aaron in his prime is better." Rodgers only recently joined the Steelers on a one-year contract, entering what is almost certainly his final NFL season in 2025. Only time will tell as to whether Rodgers can propel Pittsburgh to the playoffs, and a first postseason win since Roethlisberger was under center in January 2017, but Roethlisberger is optimistic that Rodgers has plenty left in the tank after two tumultuous, injury-affected years with the New York Jets. "I think you'll get a better Aaron this year," Roethlisberger said. "Just because the thought process of the Achilles, 'what can I do, what can I not do?' I don't think he'll think about it at all." Legendary NFL quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has split fan opinion after claiming that Aaron Rodgers was 'better' in his prime than Patrick Mahomes. Debates over where Rodgers stands within the pantheon of football's greatest ever quarterbacks has been rife after he confirmed that he's ready to end his NFL career. The quarterback signed a one-year, $13.65million deal with the Steelers earlier this month however admitted that he expects the upcoming season to be his final. In contrast, Mahomes has plenty of years left on the football field and is quickly rising up the quarterback 'GOAT' list after shining in recent years. The Chiefs star, who is just 29, has been to five Super Bowls in his career and won three - compared to Rodgers' single title claimed at Super Bowl XLV. Despite this, Roethlisberger insisted that a 'prime' Rodgers trumps Mahomes - but still took time to heap praise on the Chiefs star. He revealed: 'I would take Aaron in his prime over Patrick now. (Pat) He'll go down as another arguable G.O.A.T. I think Aaron in his prime is better'. It didn't take long for fans to provide their opinions on the statement and it's fair to say there was a split among supporters. Some were echoing Roethlisberger's thoughts, as they wrote: 'AR is the most efficient QB in NFL history. Ben spit facts'. 'Completely agree. Put prime Rodgers in Mahomes' situation and that would be insane,' another said. However, some fans were quick to back Mahomes. 'Maybe in regular season but in the playoffs dude never played to his potential everyone knows that', one said. 'Rogers might be the better passer overall But obviously Mahomes has the better success in terms of champions', another said. 'No i don't agree with this statement. I love Rodgers but Mahomes is something else'. Rodgers agreed to play his 21st season with the Steelers this month on a deal that reportedly includes $10million guaranteed - following yet another offseason in NFL limbo after his split from the New York Jets. After leaving New York, Rodgers had been linked with city rivals the Giants and the Minnesota Vikings as well as the Steelers. It quickly became clear, however, that Pittsburgh was the only realistic option on the table for him, before he jetted to Pennsylvania for talks with Mike Tomlin. Yet, Rodgers still took his time before committing to the Steelers before admitting to Joe Rogan last month that tragedy in his personal life, with multiple members of his inner circle said to be battling cancer, had forced him to put his decision on hold.
