David Benavidez vs Anthony Yarde confirmed: WBC light heavyweight title fight scheduled for November, find out full details
WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez will defend his title against Britain's Anthony Yarde in November, Saudi boxing officials announced on July 3. Turki Alalshikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority and president of the Saudi Boxing Federation, confirmed the fight as part of Riyadh Season. The exact date and venue are yet to be finalised. The bout will be Benavidez's first since he was promoted to full champion status. The 28-year-old previously held the interim belt, which he captured with a unanimous decision win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk in June 2024. He followed up with a victory against David Morrell in February, securing his position as the division's leading contender. Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) was elevated to champion earlier this year after former titleholder Dmitry Bivol opted for a trilogy bout against Artur Beterbiev rather than defend against the interim titleholder. Long linked to a clash with Canelo Alvarez at super middleweight, Benavidez moved up in weight after failing to secure the fight. His opponent, Anthony Yarde (27-3, 24 KOs), will be making his third attempt at a world title. The London-born fighter fell short in his first title shot against Sergey Kovalev in 2019 and again in 2023, when he was stopped by Beterbiev in a high-profile bout for the WBC, IBF and WBO titles. Yarde returned to winning form in April with a points win over Lyndon Arthur on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Conor Benn. He'll now seek a breakthrough moment against one of the division's most powerful and technically gifted champions. The November contest adds another high-profile name to Riyadh Season, which has emerged as a key player in boxing's global calendar. Further details on the card are expected in the coming weeks.

Albuquerque police arrest sex offender accused of having juveniles in his home
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A convicted sex offender who has served prison time for child rape has been arrested again, accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl. Story continues below Community: NM Dancewear closes its doors for good, leaving hole in dance community Food: Los Ranchos restaurant named best spot for brunch in the state by Yelp Crime: ABQ woman frustrated, two vehicles stolen from hospital parking lot days apart Film: Do you recognize these 'El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie' filming locations? The Albuquerque Police Department said 42-year-old Joseph Lacour-Benavidez was found with two juvenile runaways in his home. Detectives who did the investigation and arrested him Thursday told KRQE they are glad the offender is off the streets. 'We found out stuff was going on with one of these juveniles. We arrested him today and charged him with a bunch of counts of CSP, exploitation of a child, just all kinds of stuff to try to keep him in jail to keep these children safe,' said Detective Byron Samora with the Albuquerque Police Department. According to a criminal complaint, on Monday, police arrived at the home of Joseph Lacour-Benavidez, looking for two runaways, 14 and 11 years old. At the home, they found Lacour-Benavidez and his mother, along with the girls who had run away from a foster home. Benavidez admitted to having sexual relations with the 14-year-old and said they were inappropriately texting each other. He told detectives his girlfriend introduced him to the 14-year-old. Benavidez is a registered sex offender for the rape of a 12-year-old back in 2002. After serving prison time in that case, he pleaded guilty in 2017 to child solicitation for trying to get a teen to send him nude pictures by text. 'Since this individual was not on probation, the law does not permit them to hand over their electronics to be monitored by law enforcement. With that being said, we'd like to take a proactive approach to remind parents, guardians, and those who are overseeing children that they're monitoring and educating their juveniles on things like this,' said Lt. Erica Lowry with the Special Victims Section at APD. At this time, it is not believed that the 11-year-old child was the victim of a sexual assault. Benavidez was arrested Thursday and is locked up at the Metropolitan Detention Center. APD said more people could face charges as the investigation is ongoing. Benavidez faces rape charges, along with contributing to the delinquency of a minor for giving the 14-year-old meth. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Canelo Alvarez Explains What Annoyed Him About David Benavidez
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - SEPTEMBER 14: Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez speaks at a press conference after he ... More defeated Edgar Berlanga during their super middleweight world titles of the Premiere Boxing Championship on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on September 14, 2024. (Photo by Tayfun Coskun/Anadolu via Getty Images) Canelo Alvarez is an all-time great, and at this stage of his career and life, he moves at his own pace. He refuses to be accelerated by anything or anyone, and that includes David Benavidez, one of the many who seek to meet him in the ring. I spoke to Canelo this week about Benavidez's approach and his pursuit of the Mexican icon. LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JANUARY 09: Boxer David Benavidez works out at Pound 4 Pound Gym on January 09, ... More 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Benavidez is scheduled to meet WBA light heavyweight champion David Morrell Jr. in a bout at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on February 01. (Photo by) I asked Canelo what annoyed him about the 28-year-old interim light heavyweight champion's style. Like former opponent Floyd Mayweather Jr., who Canelo identified as a 'great fighter' during our conversation, the Mexican icon has reached a point in his career that produces a level of liberation most fighters never get to enjoy. Canelo has had so much in-ring and financial success that he no longer has to run to build a legacy or fortune for himself. That is already secured. Canelo's level of vulnerability to the criticism that has come from his unwillingness to fight Benavidez is based on how much he cares about what people have to say. And believe me, there is a ton of chatter. The very first comment on the video is a pro-Benavidez comment, and it is not without merit. One commenter said: One key point that Canelo—and some other great fighters I've spoken to—sometimes realize is that there will always be another guy. There will always be a guy that the public and boxing community wants them to fight. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 27: Boxer Canelo Alvarez poses with his championship belts at the end of ... More the press conference during the press tour for his fight against Gennady Golovkin on June 27, 2022 in New York City. (Photo by) At some point, they have to evolve into being businessmen that box, and not remain fighters who don't understand business. That's a tough pill to swallow for fans who simply want to see fights. But I never blame a fighter for reaching this level, especially when they have accomplished as much as Canelo and others of his ilk. Canelo's next fight is scheduled for May 3. He will face IBF super middleweight champion William Scull. Canelo comes in as the WBO and WBC champion at 168 pounds, and he is looking to unify three-fourths of the titles in the division.

Corpus Christi ISD Teacher of the Year winners share love for students, public education
The district-wide Teacher of the Year winners for Corpus Christi ISD have been chosen. Thursday evening, the district recognized the top teachers of the 2024-25 school year for elementary and secondary schools. They were chosen by a committee of district faculty and staff members. Amalia "Dolores" Barragan, who teaches fourth grade at Creekside Elementary School, was named the Elementary Teacher of the Year. Barragan has been a teacher for 18 years. She believes education can transform lives, Superintendent Roland Hernandez said Thursday. "Teaching is more than a profession," Barragan said. "It's a calling, a passion and a privilege." Teachers do not succeed alone, she said. Students are the heart of the work. "Every lesson, every breakthrough and every small victory belongs to them," Barragan said. Pedro Benavidez, who teaches chemistry at Ray High School, was named Secondary Teacher of the Year. Benavidez strives to instill resilience, adaptability and the importance of lifelong learning in his students, Hernandez said. Benavidez said he encourages everyone to remain curious throughout their lives. He has worked at Ray High School for 18 years and believes strongly in public education, he said. Both Barragan and Benavidez will now be considered for the Regional Teacher of the Year honors, competing with teachers from across the Coastal Bend. The winner of the regional competition is then eligible to be named Texas Teacher of the Year. In addition to the elementary and secondary district winners, the district also honored finalists Barnes Elementary School third grade teacher Alexandra Romero, Metro Elementary School second grade teacher Whitney Copeland, Driscoll Middle School eighth grade U.S. History teacher Selina Garcia and Student Support Center middle school math teacher Casandra Jackson. 2 men found guilty in 2006 aggravated kidnapping, aggravated assault
SALT LAKE CITY () — Two men were found guilty in a 2006 aggravated sexual assault of a teenage girl in the Third District Court, according to Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill. Jose Luis Pina-Cruz and Frank P. Benavidez went on trial last week on Friday, Feb. 14, where the jury found each defendant guilty of one count of first-degree felony aggravated kidnapping, one count of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, and one count of first-degree felony aggravated robbery. Sentencing for both defendants is set for April 4. Suspect charged in Salt Lake City kidnapping and rape case 17 years later In 2006, a teenage victim-survivor told authorities that she had been sexually assaulted by two men whom she could not identify. She reportedly said that when she was walking home in Salt Lake City, a car drove by her several times. She said a man had jumped out of the car, ran toward her, and pointed a gun at her, telling her to come with him. She was allegedly taken to a field with a mattress where both the driver and passenger sexually assaulted her. In court documents, the victim-survivor said the suspects took her phone and money before throwing her out of a car. She then waved down a motorcyclist who called the police for her. She was taken to the hospital where a sexual assault exam was conducted and DNA samples for a sexual assault kit were collected. Gill said that multiple agencies worked together on this case, and attributed the successful identification of the perpetrators to Utah's participation in the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI). SAKI funding has helped to provide more support and improve systematic response to sexual assault victims, improve transparency in the criminal justice process, as well as reduce processing times for sexual assault kits. In 2018, the victim-survivor's sexual assault kit was tested through SAKI, which led to one of the men, Benavidez, being identified through the Combined DNA Index System, a computer software program with DNA profiles from convicted individuals. Charges were then filed against Benavidez. While preparing to prosecute Benavidez, DNA technology continued to evolve and the prosecution team applied unprocessed samples from this case through new technology. It was then that Pina-Cruz was identified as the second perpetrator. 'We hope these convictions help the victim-survivor begin to feel safe and heal from the harm and trauma that was inflicted on her. Unknown assailants committing crimes are some of the most disturbing because they hide in the crowd of society,' said Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill. Gill continued: 'While these two may have thought they got away with this horrific act they were held accountable due to advances in technology. We appreciate the funding provided by the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative that helped to ensure both of these defendants could be held accountable for their depraved and violent crimes.' Gill also thanked prosecutors Morgan Vedejs, Heather Lindsay, and support staff for their years of dedication to the case to help ensure justice for the victim survivor. 'We are highly appreciative of the efforts of the Department of Public Safety and former Agent Coats for coordinating funding and support through SAKI to ensure the kit in this case was tested with updated modality and providing ongoing support for the victim-survivor. We also appreciate the dedicated work of the Salt Lake City Police Department detectives that worked on this case,' he said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
