Bentley Reveals Stunning EXP 15 Concept, My Brutally Honest Take

This plug-in powerhouse isn't for plebes Bentley is a storied luxury brand with a design language that is easily recognizable, but it can't remain in the past forever. News of the Bentley EXP 15 Concept recently dropped, and it shows the world an even more radical departure from the classic Bentley design than the Mulliner. It's also far more modern, far more squared-off, and far less swoopy than the EXP 100 GT concept from 2019. The electric EXP 15 points the way to the brand's electrified future as Bentley's first EV as a tall two-door grand tourer/crossover with a sloping greenhouse and an interior that befits a modern king. Let's take a look at this concept that will pave the way to Bentley's future. 0:00 / 0:09 2024 Kia EV6 GT-Line review: Is this the EV that will convert you? Watch More A bit of old, a lot of new Bentley EXP 15 Concept — Source: Bentley Bentley doesn't want to completely do away with tradition, so it borrowed a silhouette from its past. The cab-rearward shape is meant to evoke the Bentley Speed Six 'Blue Train' from the 1920s and 30s. There's also a fresh interpretation of the signature Bentley grille, this time a faux version with vivid LED illumination, capped off by a new illuminated logo (now with falcon wings instead of the old owl wings?) and a modernized Bentley hood ornament. The LED headlight shape carries over to the big taillights. Bentley EXP 15 Concept — Source: Bentley The large, three-door body (one on the driver's side, two on the passenger side, with a suicide door at the rear) is characterized by tall, slab-sided panels and enormous rear haunches, for which Bentleys are known. Ornamentation on the outside is kept to a minimum, a goal by Andreas Mindt, Bentley's design chief. Bentley refers to the EXP 15's styling approach as 'resting beast mode', communicating a readiness for the execution of power and motion. Bentley is making a big statement with a design that pushes far beyond anything it has built before. Minimalism carries over to the interior but not in a Spartan manner. The winged dash with inset screens provides stunning symmetry, and the three-seat layout imparts a lounge-like cabin with spacious comfort for the passengers. Inside, the EXP 15 focuses on sustainability and digital minimalism. Cabin materials aren't specified, but it wouldn't be out of the question for Bentley to use environmentally-friendly textiles, beautiful veneers, and vegan leathers. The center stack's illuminated control wheel will interact with Bentley's upcoming 'self-learning AI assistant'. It looks beautiful, but it's not just a pretty ornament. It will also provide an advanced user experience that is currently in development for a production version and for future Bentley models. There are also luggage tie-down straps, fold-out tailgate seats, and a huge center tunnel with controls for the rear, including a gorgeous reading lamp mounted between the back seats. Bentley's EV roadmap Bentley EXP 15 Concept — Source: Bentley The EXP 15 is not a production car, but it may very well indicate what all future Bentley models may look like. There are no details about the EXP 15's electric powertrain, but it's definitely electric. The concept will give birth to a production version sometime in 2026, but it hasn't been revealed how closely it will resemble the concept vehicle. Final thoughts Bentley design is clearly evolving with the times and no longer resting on its laurels. While Bentley hasn't confirmed that the EXP 15 will directly morph into a production model, company execs strongly suggest that a two-door grand tourer EV will occupy its lineup sometime in the future. It's a gamble for the brand to both go fully electric and almost completely depart from its current design language. The new EV will undoubtedly be powerful, but even affluent Bentley buyers will want to know what its range will be. Only time will tell. About the Author Amos Kwon View Profile

Bentley unveils EXP 15 concept car
Volkswagen Group owned Bentley Motors has revealed its latest luxury concept car, the EXP 15, ahead of its first fully-electric car launch in 2026. It says the concept car embodies the company's vision for future designs, drawing inspiration from its early 20th-century Grand Tourer heritage and reinterpreting it for the 21st century. While the EXP 15 is not intended for production or sale, Bentley says it offers a glimpse into the design direction of future models of the brand, including an upcoming fully-electric car. The concept introduces an elevated sporting sedan silhouette, incorporating modern lighting technology. It offers a three-door, three-seat configuration that prioritises passenger comfort and includes storage solutions for luggage and pets, as well as tailgate seating for outdoor events. Created using virtual reality (VR) software, the interior of the EXP 15 is a blend of tactile switches and digital interfaces, which can be customised according to the driver's preferences. Bentley has also introduced a new 'Winged B' emblem, while the brand's signature interior diamond quilt pattern has been reimagined for both interior and exterior applications. The exterior is finished in a liquid metal satin paint known as Pallas Gold, featuring golden white highlights inspired by the Bentley Speed Six. The paint incorporates a new ultra-thin aluminium pigment, enabling it to be used in front of safety radar devices without compromising signal quality and ensuring visibility to Lidar (light detection and ranging) systems used by autonomous driving technologies. While primarily a design concept, the EXP 15 is envisioned with a fully-electric, all-wheel-drive powertrain, promising long-range and fast recharging capabilities. However, technical specifications and platform details remain undisclosed as the focus remains on the design concept. The company noted that EXP 15 is not a direct preview of the smaller all-electric production it expected in 2026, but it does incorporate subtle design cues and showcases digital and technical interior ideas that may become a reality in Bentley's future models. Bentley Design director Robin Page said: 'It's clear that SUVs are a growing segment and we understand the GT market – through four generations of the Continental GT – but the trickiest segment is the sedan because it's changing. 'Some customers want a classic 'three-box' sedan shape, others a 'one-box' design, and others again something more elevated. So this was a chance for us to talk to people and get a feeling.' Prior to this development, Bentley Motors announced a strategic collaboration with Škoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited (SAVWIPL) to expand its expand its presence in the Indian market. Bentley EXP 15 concept hints at brand's unconventional take on luxury EVs
The three-seat layout of the EXP 15 draws direct inspiration from the 1930 Bentley Speed Six 'Blue Train,' a car named after a publicity race involving Bentley's then-chairman Woolf Barnato and a French train. Check Offers Bentley has taken the covers off its EXP 15 concept, offering an early look at the brand's approach to its first electric vehicle, expected in 2026. Rather than following traditional design paths, the EXP 15 leans heavily into experimentation, both in form and layout, with clear references to the company's past. An unusual layout The three-seat layout of the EXP 15 draws direct inspiration from the 1930 Bentley Speed Six 'Blue Train," a car named after a publicity race involving Bentley's then-chairman Woolf Barnato and a French train. That historical connection is visible in the car's shape and seating arrangement: a right-hand driver's seat with two staggered passenger seats behind. The door layout is also unconventional, with two doors on the left side and one on the right. A custom dog bed ahead of the rear passenger seat and picnic chairs integrated into the tailgate point to lifestyle-focused additions not commonly seen in production vehicles. The EXP 15 retains a long front section, not for performance hardware but to house twin storage compartments accessed through centre-hinged panels. The traditional front grille has been replaced by a decorative lighting element, which Bentley calls 'digital art." Inside, the concept mixes digital screens with physical controls, and uses materials from longstanding British textile suppliers. As screens fill the dashboard, physical switches and conventional textures are still there, suggestive of a hybrid solution instead of a complete digital shift. Straddling segments in a shifting market Bentley's design chief Robin Page admits the EXP 15 does not neatly fall into a single class of vehicle. Its proportions sit somewhere between a coupe, sedan, and SUV—likely a response to the evolving preferences in the luxury segment. According to Page, customer expectations around sedan design are diverging, and the EXP 15 was developed in part to gauge interest in new formats. Here's what it gets Balancing experimentation with brand familiarity In spite of its unorthodox layout, the EXP 15 still retains several fundamental characteristics of the modern Bentleys—grand size, aggressive road presence, and focus on long-distance comfort. Ettore Bugatti once supposedly described early Bentley 3-Litre as "the fastest lorry in the world," underlining the firm's tradition of combining performance with bulk. The EXP 15, electric and asymmetrical as it is, follows that same path of embracing size and distinctiveness, even if the execution feels more speculative than production-ready. The concept's value lies less in being a preview of a specific model and more in showing how Bentley is grappling with what a luxury electric vehicle could be—one that may not need to look or function like anything the brand has produced before.
