Honoring Black History Month: Temple native & pioneering astronaut Bernard Harris
TEMPLE, Texas (FOX 44) — Temple native and astronaut Bernard Anthony Harris blazed a trail that took him to outer space — as the first African-American to walk in space.
Harris accomplished the feat in 1995 — in his second space shuttle mission. During his four-hour and 39-minute spacewalk, Harris paved the way for future generations. Inspired by the 1969 moon landing, Harris pursued a career in medicine before joining NASA.
He logged over 438 hours in space, and traveled more than 7 million miles.
Today, through his Harris Foundation, he continues to inspire youth in S.T.E.M. fields.
From Temple to the stars, Bernard Harris proves that with determination – the sky is not the limit.
