Christopher Nolan's ‘The Odyssey' Teaser Leaks Online Amid Theatrical Rollout: Here's What Happens in the First Footage

The first teaser for Christopher Nolan and Universal's 'The Odyssey,' which is beginning to play exclusively in theaters, has leaked online on X and TikTok. Like many of Nolan's previous blockbusters, most recently for best picture winner 'Oppenheimer' in 2023, the famed director has released a short teaser more than a year in advance. 'The Odyssey' teaser is timed to be included alongside the release of Universal's 'Jurassic World Rebirth.' More from Variety 'One of Them Days' Standout Aziza Scott Joins Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page in Universal's 'Italianna' (EXCLUSIVE) Cynthia Erivo to Produce Sci-Fi Action Thriller 'Saturation Point' at Universal Steven Spielberg Debuts Nail-Biting Action Footage From New Film at Emotional Universal Theater Dedication The footage's exclusivity to theaters keeps with Nolan's longstanding prioritization of theatrical exhibition. The director jumped from his decades-long partner Warner Bros. to Universal for 'Oppenheimer' after he voiced dismay that his old studio woud be releasing its entire 2021 theatrical slate simultaneously to HBO Max. But even before 'The Odyssey' teaser could begin to play in the United States leaks began popping up Tuesday afternoon, with many of them getting swiftly taken down under copyright flags. This isn't the first time a major movie or show has been hit by a leak. 'Spider-Man: No Way Home,' 'House of the Dragon' and the final season of 'Game of Thrones' all faced early footage leaking online. Variety has reached out to Universal for comment. The teaser, which is 70 seconds long, briefly shows Matt Damon's lead character Odysseus, his son Telemachus (played by Tom Holland) and a mystery character played by Jon Bernthal. It begins with some narration by what sounds like Robert Pattinson, who also plays an unknown character. 'Darkness. Zeus' laws smashed to pieces. A kingdom without a king since my master died,' he says over shots of a dark blue ocean and waves crashing along the sandy shore. 'He knew it was an unwinnable war, and then somehow…somehow he won it.' There are two shots of what appears to be the famous Trojan Horse — Odysseus' master plan to sneak Greek soldiers into Troy, massacre the soldiers and sack the city to win the war. The wooden horse's shadow is stretched across the beach, then the horse itself is seen at a distance half-submerged in water as waves roll in. In Homer's original epic, Odysseus's journey home takes ten years after his ship is blown off course and he encounters monsters like the Cyclops, is held captive by the nymph Calypso, and has run-ins with various Greek gods. The teaser then cuts to a tense conversation between Telemachus and Bernthal's character, where the latter is explaining that he doesn't know Odysseus' whereabouts. 'I know nothing of Odysseus, not since Troy,' Bernthal says as a dark storm rolls in over the water. 'I have to find out what happened to my father. When did you last see him?' Holland replies. He and Bernthal are next to each other with other characters sitting beside them in the background, lit up by dim orange flames. 'Interested in rumor, huh? Gossip. Who has a story about Odysseus, huh?' Bernthal begins shouting to the others near them. 'You? You have a story?' There's a shot of Greek soldiers clad in armor and carrying torches marching through a city street at night. The white words 'One Year From Now' appear on the black screen, teasing the film's far-off release date. 'Some say he's rich or some say he's poor,' he continues as a faraway shot shows a Greek soldier stepping through a cavernous entrance and unsheathing his sword. 'A Journey Begins' is shown on screen. 'Some say he perished. Some say he's imprisoned. What say you?' Bernthal asks over a shot of men walking toward a city at night as a ragged flag waves. 'Imprisoned?' Telemachus asks. 'What kind of prison? Good, old man like that,' Bernthal says. There are a couple more shots of dark waves, and then it's revealed that Odysseus is stranded in the middle of the ocean on some scraps of wood. 'The Odyssey' and '17. 07. 26' flash on screen, ending the teaser. Like 'Oppenheimer,' the cast for 'The Odyssey' is sprawling and star-studded. It also includes Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Cosmo Jarvis and more. The film is currently in production and will be the first large-scale production to be shot entirely with Imax cameras. Like Nolan's past films, the teaser is expected to be released online later this year. The Odyssey trailer leak reveals first look at Nolan's 'life-changing' movie

The first trailer for Sir Christopher Nolan's eagerly anticipated next film The Odyssey has debuted in cinemas – and promptly been leaked online. With a whole year still to go before its July 2026 release, the film, based on Homer's epic poem, is actually still deep in production. Filming moved to Scotland last week, with star Matt Damon, who is playing the lead role of hero Odysseus, spotted in Moray while the 'mythic action epic' films at Findlater Castle. But as he did with Oscar-winning box office smash Oppenheimer, Nolan has delivered an intriguing teaser trailer to screen in front of his studio Universal's latest summer release, which was Jordan Peele's Nope two years ago. While we won't link to any of the leaked material, fans who have caught it are reacting with predictable glee given Nolan's triumphant reputation as a filmmaker. 'My life has been changed by the Odyssey teaser trailer,' announced Joel on X while @yashsayings added: 'Holy, this gonna be epic.' 'The Odyssey teaser trailer gave me chills. Nolan Nation, we are so back,' enthused Mari as @bastistinson simply declared: 'In Nolan We Trust.' 'Bernthal Oscar incoming,' suggested @theylovekado of one of the cast members who features most prominently in it, with Ethan chiming in: 'Would love that for him tbh haha.' Fan Jay also expressed his love for the film after having seen less than 70 seconds from it by posting a gif showing someone quickly adding a five-star review to Letterboxd. 'Just saw the Odyssey trailer leak…,' he tweeted. The trailer opens with views across an ocean as a voiceover intones: 'Darkness. Zeus's law smashed to pieces. I'm without a king since my master died.' We then see a shadow and glimpse of the famous Trojan horse on the beach as it continues: 'He knew it was an unwinnable war. And then somehow… somehow, he won it.' 'I know nothing of Odysseus, not since Troy,' Jon Bernthal's as-yet unidentified character then says before the trailer cuts to a scene showing him and Tom Holland as Telemachus in a candlelit dining hall. 'I have to find out what happened to my father. When did you last see him?' the younger man asks to Bernthal's character who appears slightly hostile thanks to his growling voice coupled with the quietly eerie and slightly foreboding background music. 'Who has a story about Odysseus? You? You have a story?' Bernthal's character then asks the room before adding: 'Some say he's rich. Some say he's poor. Some say he perished. Some say he's imprisoned.' While he speaks we see glimpses of men in armour holding torches and heading down an alleyway – perhaps sacking Troy – and a man drawing his sword as he leads those following him into a cave. 'What kind of prison could hold a man like that?' Bernthal's character then asks as it cuts to a shot of what appears to be Damon as Odysseus, lying unconscious on the partial wreck of a ship in the sea. The Odyssey is one of two major epic poems attributed to Homer from around the 8th century BC, and follows on from the first – the Iliad, which is concerned with the Trojan War. The Odyssey follows the king of Ithaca, Odysseus, on his 10-year quest to return to his home island after a decade at Troy. Along the way he must contend with the wrath of the gods and perils including being enslaved by a nymph, cannibals, an angry Cyclops, a sea-witch, a treacherous whirlpool and a six-headed monster. Meanwhile at home on Ithaca, his wife Penelope and now-adult son Telemachus (Holland) must contend with a horde of suitors descending on the palace and pressuring her to choose one of them in the place of her presumed-dead husband so they can take the throne Unsurprisingly, Nolan has attracted a star-studded cast but we only know the casting for a few key players so far, including Damon as Odysseus and Holland as Telemachus. Charlize Theron recently revealed that she will be playing the witch-goddess Circe, while Bernthal's appearance in the trailer suggests he could be playing either Nestor or Menelaus, legendary kings in Greek mythology who the youngster visits looking for information as to his father's whereabouts. Given the advancing age of Nestor, Menelaus could be more likely. The Iconic Marvel Superhero Set to Return for 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day'

The Iconic Marvel Superhero Set to Return for 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' originally appeared on Parade. It's a common characteristic of Marvel's movies and TV series to feature returning appearances from certain fan-favorite characters. Whether discussing Iron Man's supporting appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming or Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's iterations of New York's webslinger in No Way Home, Marvel has always found a way to reintroduce some of their most iconic heroes and villains into future superhero outings. As development continues on the MCU's latest venture, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it seems that the comic book company is once again eyeing a plethora of iconic faces to team up with Tom Holland's puckish Peter Parker. In particular, Jon Bernthal's grizzled anti-hero Frank Castle, better known by his comic book alter ego The Punisher, is officially set to return in Marvel's upcoming Spider-Man film. The 48-year Bernthal previously debuted as the character in Netflix's widely loved Daredevil TV series. Following his initial introduction on the show, The Punisher eventually managed to secure his own two-season-long Netflix series, detailing the vigilante's violent crusade against New York's criminal underworld. As with each of Netflix's Marvel series, The Punisher was ultimately canceled after its initial two seasons. In more recent years, however, Bernthal's version of the character returned in Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again, ensuring his successful transition into the mainstream MCU. Details about Brand New Day's plot have remained incredibly scarce, but as of yet, several prominent casting decisions have been announced, including Stranger Things' Sadie Sink and The Bear's Liza Colon-Zayas. Zendaya and Jacob Batalon, who had previously starred in the first three Spider-Man films opposite Holland, are also set to reprise their roles in Brand New Day. In addition to his upcoming appearance in Holland's latest Spider-Man film, Bernthal is also set to star in a Punisher TV special for Disney+, scheduled for release sometime in 2026. Bernthal will co-write the project's script alongside director Reinaldo Marcus Green, marking the duo's second collaboration after 2022's We Own This City. The Iconic Marvel Superhero Set to Return for 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' first appeared on Parade on Jun 23, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 23, 2025, where it first appeared.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day will reportedly feature a big character from Daredevil: Born Again – but not the one Marvel fans really want to see

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will feature a major character from Daredevil: Born Again They aren't one of the two individuals that Marvel fans want to see in the movie Audiences have long clamored for a Spider-Man and Daredevil big-screen team up Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to include a major character from Daredevil: Born Again. That's according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), who claims the forthcoming movie will feature a fan favorite who's appeared in Daredevil's first TV show on Netflix and its recently released sequel on Disney+. So, who's the individual in question? Have Sony and Marvel finally answered fans' perennial prayer for a big-screen team-up between Tom Holland's webslinger and Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock? Or is Vincent D'Onofrio's Wilson Fisk set to feature as Spider-Man 4's primary antagonist? Sorry to disappoint you all, but it's neither of those actors. Instead, Jon Bernthal's Frank Castle/The Punisher is the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character who's reportedly set to turn up in Spider-Man's next solo flick. Now, a lot of people – myself included – are big fans of Bernthal and his take on Frank Castle. Nonetheless, I'm sure MCU devotees were hoping Cox or D'Onofrio was the individual who'd appear in Spider-Man 4. If THR's sources are to be believed, Brand New Day would represent the second time that Holland and Bernthal have teamed up on a project. The duo were also part of the cast for Pilgrimage, an Irish medieval film that arrived in theaters in July 2017. Nobody outside of the Marvel Phase 6 movie's chief creative team knows, but we can certainly speculate on Frank Castle's involvement. For one, his inclusion suggests that Brand New Day's plot might be more grounded than its predecessor. Indeed, 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, aka one of the best Marvel movies post-Avengers: Endgame, was a multiversal affair. If The Punisher is part of Brand New Day's growing ensemble, it would be bizarre to include him if Sony and Marvel haven't collaborated on a film with street-level story sensibilities. It's possible that he may be drafted in to help tackle one of the original Avengers who's also slated to appear, too. In late May, rumors emerged that Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner/The Hulk will have a major role in Spider-Man 4. Industry insiders indicate that The Hulk will, well, Hulk out at some point in Brand New Day. If he does, Spidey could use Castle's assistance in stopping the big, mean, green machine if he goes rogue and/or starts rampaging through New York City. Castle has worn the War Machine armored suit in Marvel Comics, too, so he could make use of James 'Rhodey' Rhodes' super-suit to help tackle The Hulk. Of course, the biggest question of all concerns the level of violence Brand New Day will contain. Bernthal's Castle has only appeared in R-rated MCU projects – those being, Daredevil, Daredevil: Born Again, and The Punisher, all of which are among the best Disney+ shows around. However, the wallcrawler's next film is nailed on to be a PG-13 film (in the US, anyway) when Brand New Day releases on July 31, 2026. Given how one of Bernthal's non-negotiables was the retention of the character's hyperviolent tendencies in Born Again season 1 and other projects he's set to appear in, such as The Punisher's standalone Disney+ special and Daredevil: Born Again season 2, it'll be interesting to see how an ultraviolent character like The Punisher is utilized in a more family-friendly Marvel production. Do you think Bernthal will appear in Spider-Man 4? Is Frank Castle a good inclusion if he does? Let me know in the comments. Spider-Man 4's official title has been revealed – and it has ties to a controversial time in the Marvel hero's 80-year-plus comic book history Marvel reportedly casts Stranger Things star Sadie Sink in Spider-Man 4 Marvel leak might have revealed Spider-Man: Brand New Day villains – and there could be three of them
