Party atmosphere as Newtown Football Club hits 150 years
THERE was a carnival atmosphere as Newtown Football Club invited the community to Latham Park to celebrate the club's 150th anniversary on Saturday. Hundreds of football fans made the pilgrimage and played their part in a successful event. Many of the club's living legends were also on hand to meet fans and catch up on old times. Junior matches took centre stage in the morning as the future of Newtown Football Club entertained before Newtown Football Club's newly-formed women's senior team took on Berriew. The main action of the day saw Newtown take on AFC Liverpool with the Merseyside club edging a 1-0 win. Live music, a bouncy castle and entertainment from Newtown Silver Band ensured a day not to be forgotten as fans of all ages left Latham Park with a smile on their faces. The club also marked the tragic death of Liverpool star Diogo Jota with two minute's of applause in front of a Liverpool shirt which was lovingly placed on the Latham Park turf before the afternoon's final match. Powys spa town prepares to host British bowls elite
EXCITEMENT is building ahead of the forthcoming British Isles Bowls Championships and International Series set for Llandrindod Wells. The prestigious lawn bowls event takes place at Llandrindod Wells Bowling Club's international standard Rock Park. The championships attract the top bowlers from across the country and also provide the town with a financial boost with hundreds of people investing in the local economy. The three green facility has hosted both events in the past and is known as one of the top bowls clubs in Britain. The action start with a practise day on Monday, June 23 before the real competition begins with the final day on Sunday, June 29. A host of mid Wales-based players will make the trip to the Spa town. They include June Morgan, Barbara Sheers, Fiona Preece and Joanna Weale of Presteigne who will be competing in the ladies fours championship. Berriew's Caroline Taylor captains the senior women's side in the international series and is joined by clubmate Emma Gittins, along with Naomi Evans from Llanidloes and also Joanna Weale from Presteigne. Machynlleth's Andrew Fleming is included in the senior men's squad alongside Sam Roff of Llandrindod Wells. As well as Sam Roff, teenager Ffion Stephens has been selected to play in the international women's team, together with Emma Woodcock of Cardiff, who originates from Knighton. Meanwhile youngsters Ffion Stephens and Cara Dunne of Llandrindod Wells Bowling Club have been selected to represent Wales in the Under 18 International Series being played in Ayr, Scotland on July 20-21. It has also been confirmed two Powys bowlers can look forward to winter in Malaysia this year.

Powys venue to host Britain's elite bowlers this summer
The British Bowls Championships and International Series will be held at Llandrindod Wells Bowling Club from next month. The showpiece event begins on Monday, June 23 and will conclude on Sunday, June 29. Practice will dominate Monday before the championships take place on Tuesday and Wednesday with the international series beginning on Thursday after Wednesday morning's opening ceremony. Llandrindod Wells Bowling Club is the largest bowling club in Wales. Set in the heart of the Welsh countryside with panoramic views, there are three greens of international standard catering for all levels of competition. A major venue, the club is host to national, international and county bowling events throughout the season, as well as club competition. The series will see the top bowlers from Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland and Jersey compete in singles, pairs, triples and fours disciplines. The event will bring over 300 bowlers from Wales, England, Scotland, Ireland and Jersey to Llandrindod Wells for a week long feast of bowls action. The event will bring hundreds of bowlers and spectators to the event using the local bars and restaurants, pubs and accommodation within the town and the local area. Entry to the event is free and is a great spectacle with action each day from 8.30am until 8.30pm. Powys will be well represented with June Morgan, Barbara Sheers, Fiona Preece and Jo Weale of Presteigne Bowls Club competing in the ladies fours championship. Llanfair United celebrate Central Wales Cup triumph
Llanfair United lifted the Central Wales Women's Cup for only the second time in their history following a 3-0 win over Berriew in Welshpool on Thursday night. Jodie Carswell dragged wide before United opened the scoring when Emma Williams latched on to a through ball and maintained her composure to finish past Berriew goalkeeper Sarah Parkes. Parkes denied Sophie Cook before the North East Wales League champions-elect upped their game with ex-United favourite Gemma Jones testing goalkeeper Ffion Davies. Llanfair ended the first-half on top with Paris Schofield and Cook going close. It was a similar story at the start of the second-half with Williams firing wide before Llanfair doubled their lead from the penalty spot with Schofield converting. Jones was denied by Davies while Harriet Davies blasted over at the other end as Llanfair sought to put the game to bed. The Mount Field club completed the scoring with 15 minutes remaining when substitute Becky Jones raced into the penalty area before lifting the ball over Parkes. Llanfair could have added to their tally with player-manager Lucie Gwilt heading wide before Williams and Jones was denied by ex-TNS custodian Parkes.
