Andie Chen lost out at the Star Awards again: 'If you really love what you are doing, you just keep going'
The Star Awards drought continues for Mediacorp actor Andie Chen, who went home empty-handed once again. The 40-year-old was up for three trophies: Best Actor for his role as a strict dad in Born to Shine, Top 10 Most Popular Male Artiste and BYD Favourite Male Character. The Best Actor trophy eventually went to Special Achievement Award honoree Christopher Lee, who also bagged the Best Programme Host award for Dishing With Chris Lee Season 2. In a moment we caught on camera, Lee approached Chen to 'apologise' to him. Chen jokingly replied: 'You still have the cheek to come up to me?' 'You will surely get it next time, okay?' Lee reassured Chen after giving him a tight hug. When met the Star Search 2007 champ, even this writer felt compelled to spend a few minutes consoling him. After all, how can you not feel for the dude who has been waiting 16 years since his first nomination for Best Newcomer at Star Awards 2009? We also chose our words carefully, especially when he remarked that some people had come up to him and said he 'just has to work harder'. 'But it has been a long time, and I am already doing my best,' Chen laughed. Despite the obvious disappointment, Chen assured us he is not devastated. 'I think that feeling [of devastation] peaked a few years ago, and now, I am in an okay place. Right now, I guess I will have to wait till the heavens decide that I deserve it before giving it to me,' he said. Chen even jokingly said that his family seemed to have got used to him not winning at this point. His wife, former Mediacorp actress Kate Pang, dropped him a text saying, 'You are the best!', while his parents, who attended the awards, told him that they would 'wait by the road to go home together'. 'I do feel sian [tired] for them [his parents]. They have been coming almost every year. I know deep down, they can't wait to celebrate when I win something,' he said. There is, however, at least one person who is openly sharing her disappointment – Avery, his nine-year-old daughter. 'My kids are staying with my brother, and he texted me that she is quite sad that I didn't win,' he said. However, Chen told us that he sees it as a teaching moment. 'They have never seen me stop, and I am not about to stop now. If you really love what you are doing, you just keep going,' he said. The couple also have a son, Aden, who is 10. It's not all doom and gloom, though. Chen said he found joy in seeing his colleagues go up to collect their Top 10 Most Popular Awards. The popularity stakes, he reasoned, is a game he doesn't think he's 'suitable for or capable of winning'. 'There are many aspects of the 'popularity' contest that don't sit well with me,' he said, declining to go into further detail. However, he reiterated that he's always set his sights on acting. 'An acting award is something that I have been working towards my entire career, and it would be nice to be recognised," said Chen.

Star Awards 2025: Biggest winner Christopher Lee says son Zed was happy he was thanked twice on stage
Christopher Lee got the best early birthday present when he took home three trophies at the Star Awards on Sunday night (Jul 6). The Malaysia-born actor, who turns 54 on Jul 23, was the night's biggest winner, clinching Best Actor for mystery drama Kill Sera Sera, Best Programme Host for variety show Dishing With Chris Lee 2, and the Special Achievement Award. The first two, he shared, were completely unexpected. In fact, he was so surprised that he hesitated before going on stage when pal Mark Lee announced his name for Best Programme Host. Backstage, still clutching his trophies in disbelief, Lee beamed: 'I'm really surprised and happy. I was very contented to just receive the Special Achievement Award. I didn't expect to get Best Host and Best Actor too.' Lee, who snagged Best Host for the same show in 2023, previously took home Best Actor in 1997 for The Price Of Peace and in 2013 for Show Hand. He also has four Golden Bell Awards under his belt. 'Like my wife said, 'What award can I win next year?'' he chuckled, referring to Fann Wong's infamous quip at the 1995 Star Awards. 'It really feels that way.' For those too young to remember, a then-newbie Wong caused a stir when she blurted those words after sweeping three awards: Best Actress for Chronicle Of Life, Best Newcomer and Top 5 Most Popular Artiste. While it's debatable if Wong appreciated him bringing up her controversial one-liner, one person who would be most pleased with Lees' antics is their 11-year-old son Zed. 'That's because I mentioned his name twice on stage,' said Lee. If you too were wondering who the 'buddy Li Xi Quan' Lee thanked in his acceptance speech was – it's Zed. Now that Lee is a two-time Best Host winner, does he think Zed – who impressed with his Mandarin skills at a Mother Tongue Symposium – would be inspired to follow in dad's footsteps to be a host? 'His Chinese is good?' Lee laughed. 'I'll let him make his own choices. Perhaps he might in the future. I will let him decide for himself.' He added: 'Our generation and his are very different, and so is their way of thinking. If he wants to be a host, I'd support him. If not, I'd encourage him to do something else. What's most important is that he does something he enjoys.' As for celebrating his wins, that will have to wait. Lee had to catch a flight back to Taiwan for work right after the awards. A 57-year-old woman on SMRT bus service 190 was taken to hospital on the evening of 5 July after a bottle was thrown at the double-decker she was riding on. Police were alerted to the incident in Orchard Road and the injured woman was conscious when she was taken to Raffles Hospital. Phase 2 of the CRL is targeted for completion by 2032 and includes six underground stations. CRL King Albert Park station and CRL Clementi station will be interchange stations which connect to the Downtown Line (DTL) and East-West Line (EWL) respectively. "I hope we don't get to a point where MPs are filing questions for the sake of clocking numbers – I think that is not necessary and not very productive," Seah was quoted as saying. "Each hour spent in Parliament, if everyone turns up, is 100 man-hours... which is why we do want to make sure time is spent productively for everyone," he added. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong intends to propose Seah's election as Speaker when Parliament reopens on 5 September. Speaker of Parliament Seah Kian Peng has advised MPs to focus on asking questions that improve the lives of Singaporeans – and not to get caught up in a numbers game. Seah, in an interview with the Straits Times, had noted the trend of more parliamentary questions being filed in the previous term which set new records on the number of sittings, ministerial statements delivered and other kinds of speeches. "I hope we don't get to a point where MPs are filing questions for the sake of clocking numbers – I think that is not necessary and not very productive," Seah was quoted as saying. "Each hour spent in Parliament, if everyone turns up, is 100 man-hours... which is why we do want to make sure time is spent productively for everyone," he added. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong intends to propose Seah's election as Speaker when Parliament reopens on 5 September. Christopher Lee's star shone the brightest on a night of glitz and glamour at the 30th anniversary of the Star Awards (6 July). Lee was named Best Actor at Singapore's biggest award show for local Mandarin entertainment, in recognition for his stellar work in 'Kill Sera Sera'. Additionally, the second season of Lee's variety cooking show 'Dishing with Chris Lee' earned the actor awards for Best Programme Host and Best Entertainment Programme. Lee, who is married to actress Fann Wong, was also honoured with a Special Achievement Award. "You received this award a long time ago. You are my inspiration and motivation," Lee said in tribute to Fann during his acceptance speech. And he reserved special mention for their 10-year-old son, Zed: "I want to raise you to be a good person. Thank you for being my son." Other major winners on the night included Jessica Hsuan, who won Best Actress for her work alongside Lee in 'Kill Sera Sera', while Chen Hanwei picked up the Best Supporting Actor ('Unforgivable') and Cynthia Koh was Best Supporting Actress ('Hope Afloat').
