Cynthia Nixon loves playing 'juicy characters'

Cynthia Nixon feels she's able to "show so many more colours" in her characters at her age. The 59-year-old actress is best known for portraying Miranda Hobbes in the Sex and the City series, films and spin-off series And Just Like That..., while she also stars as Ada Brook in hit historical drama The Gilded Age. Cynthia admits she loves getting her teeth into "juicy characters" and prefers playing those who aren't "always nice". She told Best UK magazine: "It has always been the same, just very juicy characters. "I love characters who aren't always nice or who don't always do the right thing. "I'm excited to be at an age where I feel I am being allowed to show so many more colours and have so many more strings in my bow. "The characters I am playing now are so different from what I have done before. The rest is about who I'm excited to work with, be directed by and what writers are creating the character and the story." Cynthia insists it's only "10 per cent curse" that some people will only ever associate her with Miranda. She explained: "It's a tremendous blessing. "I am so proud of the show, the films and everything else. I love that people are still watching and that new people are discovering it. "Miranda gave me so many opportunities. She opened doors for me that never would have been open had it not been for that role. "The only real downside is if people only think of me as that character, but I have been lucky to be offered different kinds of roles. Asked if it's at all frustrating, she replied: "No, 90 per cent per cent blessing and 10 per cent curse maybe [laughs]. I am so proud of Miranda, the shows and the films."

Matthew Goode used to be 'really shy' and 'blush' when he started acting

Matthew Goode used to be "really shy" and "blush" all the time when he acted. The Downton Abbey star, 47, never anticipated becoming an actor because he was always nervous performing. Matthew - who studied at London's Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art - told Best UK magazine: "My mum was into amateur dramatics, but acting wasn't something I ever thought of doing as a job until I went to university. I did drama at university and then a friend of mine, my flatmate actually, went to drama school, so I thought I would maybe just give it a go." The Watchmen star admits he found it "so embarrassing" blushing, but he didn't let it stop him attaining the career he still feels "very lucky" to have. Matthew added: "It wasn't easy because I was very shy when I first started acting. I would blush all the time, which was so embarrassing. But I stuck with it and with a lot of luck, it paid off. I still feel very lucky to do what I do." Meanwhile, Matthew recently admitted he thinks it's a 'good thing' his Downtown Abbey character will not appear in the forthcoming third film based on the series. He plays Henry Talbot in the hit programme, but won't pop up in The Grand Finale movie, with Matthew saying the absence is down to his work schedule. He told Radio Times ahead of the release of Netflix's Dept. Q: 'I was unavailable for the second because I was doing 'The Offer'. 'Then (for the third 'Downtown' movie) I was shooting (Dept. Q.) 'But I also b******* my knee, and I had to have an operation. 'That takes weeks to get over, so I was never going to be able to do it. 'And let's face it, he was edging towards becoming a bit of a wet lettuce. So maybe it's a good thing.' Matthew originally joined the Downton Abbey TV series in seasons five and six, before reprising his role as Henry in the first feature film released in 2019. His character married Lady Mary Crawley, played by Michelle Dockery, with their relationship becoming a beloved storyline. But Matthew's absence in the sequels leaves fans to imagine the couple's happily-ever-after. Currently, the actor is starring as Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck in the new Scottish crime drama Dept. Q. Based on the popular novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen, the series follows Morck, billed as 'a brilliant cop but a terrible colleague', as he leads the newly created cold case unit, Department Q, often against the backdrop of an under-resourced police force.

Loose Women star says she 'always loathed it' as she slams ITV show over one major issue

One Loose Women icon has called out ITV bosses for enforcing one rule during her lengthy stint on the show which used to make her 'shudder'. Loose Women star Carol McGiffin has slammed ITV bosses for their approach to styling the programme's presenters. The 64-year-old expressed how she did not agree with the enforced dress codes and claimed that the presenters transitioned from wearing what they wanted, to being instructed on what to wear for coordination. She also voiced concerns regarding the amount of clothing waste, alleging that some garments were thrown away even if they'd only been worn once. Carol previously had two stints on Loose Women, first from 2000 until 2013, and then again from 2018 until 2023. In an article for Best UK, she said: "I did Loose Women for almost 20 years and the mandated dress codes used to exhaust me. ‌ "We went from wearing our own clothes to being bought stuff to adhere to ludicrous wardrobe policies like 'no arms on show', presumably because our ageing biceps were morphing into bingo wings. I always loathed being 'dressed' or 'styled' as they preferred to call it. ‌ "You always had to be coordinated up to the eyeballs in nice slacks, wrap dresses or boiler suits. "It used to make me shudder, nearly as much as the insane amount of waste on unimaginable amounts of clothes that had mostly only been worn once". This is not the first time Carol has spoken negatively about Loose Women in recent years, the Mirror reports. In a conversation with Woman's Own last year, she opened up on her reasons for leaving and her feelings regarding her career move. ‌ She said: "I don't regret leaving, I don't fit in there anymore." Her bold remarks mirror a past statement she made to OK! magazine while speaking about the show. ‌ She previously said: "Someone, somewhere will be offended by absolutely everything. "I'd rather not be on a show that panders to that. It's boring – and I won't be told what I can or can't say." While she has now parted ways with the show, and has little good to say about her former ITV role, Carol remains in touch with some of her former co-stars. ‌ Although she shares warmer relationships with a select handful of them. She explained: "I'm still very good friends with a lot of the Loose ladies... Denise Welch popped down here with Lincoln [Townley, her husband] last year and we met them for lunch. "I've seen Kaye [Adams], Jane [Moore] and Nadia [Sawalha] a few times." Carol addressed those she does no longer speak to, saying: "Some, I have nothing in common with. "As I said to them, 'You're not friends, you're just people I work with, who I really like.' Which horrified them."

Lucien Laviscount would give the role of James Bond a 'good shot'

Lucien Laviscount would give the role of James Bond a "good shot". The 'Emily in Paris' star is among the names who have been rumoured to be replacing Daniel Craig as the next 007, and he says it would be a "special" gig should the part of the suave spy ever come his way. He told Best UK magazine: "I think Bond for anyone would be special, wouldn't it? "But whatever else presents itself, I'll take it with open arms." Asked if he thinks he would make a good Bond, he replied: "What do you think? (laughs). "It would be cool, and if the stars aligned, and it's meant to be this time round, I'm sure I'd give it a good old shot." James Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli recently made the shock decision to step back from the iconic film series. They've formed a new joint venture with Amazon MGM to house James Bond's intellectual property rights, while remaining co-owners of the franchise. Craig, who bowed out of playing 007 after being killed off in 2021 blockbuster 'No Time To Die', said of the news in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter: 'My respect, admiration and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished. 'I wish Michael a long, relaxing (and well-deserved) retirement and whatever ventures Barbara goes on to do, I know they will be spectacular and I hope I can be part of them.' Former 007 Timothy Dalton - who played the role in 'The Living Daylights' and 'Licence to Kill' - hopes the studio doesn't try to change the franchise. He told "It's a wonderful franchise. The movies have taken different courses over the years, but there is something very good about the original and I hope Amazon latch onto that and give us the kind of film that's brought so much excitement and fun to so many people. "Can you remember the first time you saw a Bond movie? You were a kid, right? Me too! And that's what got us going. "Anyway, good luck to them, I say. I do wish them all the very, very best. They'll be doing their best to make a lot of money, so hopefully they will make good movies."
