Glasgow TRNSMT Festival to celebrate city's 850th birthday
Rockstar Energy Presents TRNSMT has joined forces with the Glasgow 850 Festival Fund to honour the city's rich cultural history and vibrant music scene. This gallery will highlight iconic moments and emerging talent from TRNSMT's history, paying tribute to the artists and audiences who have helped shape the city's sound. Mr Robertson said: "As well as playing host to some of the world's most exciting musical artists, TRNSMT has also brought together a team of some of the country's best music photographers to document the festival. "There has been an immense amount of stunning visuals created at TRNSMT over the years, so I was delighted to curate some of my favourite work by this talented group to exhibit during the Glasgow 850 celebrations." For the anniversary, an interactive art installation will also be unveiled. Commissioned especially for the event, it is the creation of Glasgow-based visual artist and designer, Nicola Beedie. This installation, inspired by the city's grid street layout, evolving skyline, and architectural heritage, consists of sustainable plinths that festivalgoers can move through and interact with, becoming part of the artwork. The monochrome plinths, representing Glasgow's diversity of musical styles, will be decorated by festivalgoers, artists, staff, and crew with paint pens over the weekend, creating a living, evolving artwork. Ms Beedie said: "When I think about Glasgow, I think about the music, the creativity and the communities, so it was really important for me to create something that could combine all of those aspects. "It didn't feel right to create a piece for the 850th anniversary of the city without involving the people."

"I would love to work with Simple Minds, they are awesome," the 55-year-old told the Glasgow Times. She continued: 'I love the fact that they still sound exactly like Simple Minds even when it comes to their new music. I'm a massive fan of theirs." The star describes herself as half Scottish and spent her summers in the country as a child. But the 'coolness' of Glasgow, is alluring for the Doin' The Do hitmaker who has nothing but love for our city. (Image: Picture supplied) Betty Boo, whose real name is Alison Moira Clarkson, will show her passion for performing in the city when she plays a show at the Hug and Pint on Wednesday, June 25. Speaking about the upcoming event, the singer said: "I can't wait to perform in Glasgow. It's such a cool city and lots of my friends are from there, so I love that Glasgow sense of humour. "Hug and Pint is a legendary venue. If the walls could talk…" READ NEXT: Simple Minds share memories of Glasgow ahead of Bellahouston Park gig The show is part of Betty Boo's UK tour which will also take her to Edinburgh, Dover and Cambridge. Attendees can expect iconic hits from the record like Where Are You Baby? as well as new songs from the singer's 2024 album, Rip Up The Rulebook. (Image: Image supplied) Speaking on the newest album, the Kensington-born star said: "I'm back making music for the first time since 2022 (when her album, Boomerang, was released), so I'll be peppering the show with some new songs as well as older ones which people should know. Hopefully, there will be some new fans out there and they won't be disappointed. 'I'm really excited because I love the tracks in the setlist which can't be a bad thing." She explained: 'I'm looking forward to playing all these small venues on the tour because they need to be supported. They are so important for nurturing new talent. "Not everyone wants to go to a big show in the city. Sometimes when you see a bigger show you have to get a hotel maybe, dinner, train fare. We are talking about hundreds of pounds, it's ridiculous." Aside from performing in Glasgow, the singer also plans to hunt down her favourite ice cream spot while she is in the city. She added: "There was this ice cream I got from an old Italian place in Glasgow. I had it years and years ago but it was delicious and was made from condensed milk. I'll have to Google it and whittle it down." Betty Boo first broke onto the music scene in the 1980s and had several hits between 1989 and 1992. She released her first solo single, Doin' the Do, in 1990 which reached seventh place in the UK Singles Chart and sold 200,000 copies. Perhaps the craziest fact about the star is that she was the inspiration behind the creation of the Spice Girls. She revealed: "The people who put the group together put the advert out for five Betty Boos. It also said something about people not turning up if they didn't know who I was or didn't have my attitude – because I used to be quite sassy and that's what they wanted the Spice Girls to be like."
