Cabinet likely to decide on 42% BC quota, panchayat polls & key reports today

Hyderabad: The state cabinet meeting on Monday is likely to decide on fixing 42% reservations for the Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies and proceeding with panchayat elections . Sources told TOI that the govt must decide on BC reservations as the high court-set deadline to finalise reservations within a month expired two days ago. The court also directed the govt to complete the panchayat elections by Sept 30. With the ordinance to remove the 50 cap on the quota from the Panchayat Raj Act of 2018 still pending with the governor, and the issue of including the enhanced BC quota in the IX Schedule of the Constitution likely to take much more time, the cabinet must decide on reservations or inform the court of the reasons for the delay. Udit Raj compares Rahul Gandhi to Babasaheb Ambedkar

Congress leader Udit Raj on Saturday said that Leader of Opposition (LoP) Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the "second Ambedkar" for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) if they listen to what he said during the Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan. Raj compared Rahul Gandhi to Babasaheb Ambedkar and said that the Other Backward Classes (OBCs) must support the statements made by the LoP. Rahul Gandhi aims to replicate it nationwide. His views are visionary. If Dalits and backward classes come forward, our economy will boost. The inequality that prevails in society will be reduced. If OBC understands what Rahul Gandhi said, he will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them," Raj told ANI. "OBCs will have to think that history does not give opportunities for progress again and again. They should follow and support what Rahul Gandhi said in the Talkatora Stadium conference. If they do so, then Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them," Raj posted on X. On Friday, Rahul Gandhi acknowledged that not conducting a caste census during the UPA government was a mistake, and said he was determined to correct it. Live Events Speaking at the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan' of OBC at Talkatora Stadium in Delhi, he said he failed to understand the issues of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) community earlier, unlike those of Dalits, tribals, and women, where he claimed the Congress had done commendable work. "I think about my work, where I did well and where I fell short, and I see two to three things. Land Acquisition Bill, MNREGA, Right to Food, Tribal Bill, and Niyamgiri struggle -- all these things I did well. As far as the issues of tribals, Dalits, and women are concerned, I should get good marks there. I did good work," he said. "One shortcoming remained in the Congress Party and my work, I didn't protect the OBC community the way I should have. The reason is that I didn't deeply understand the OBC issues at that time. Ten to fifteen years ago, I understood the difficulties faced by Dalits. Their issues are visible, they are easily understood, but the problems of OBCs remain hidden. If I had known about your issues and problems at that time, I would have conducted a caste-based census right then. That was my mistake, which I am going to correct," he said, adding that in a way, it's good that it happened, because if I had conducted a caste-based census back then, it wouldn't have been like it is today. He added that Dalits, backwards classes, tribals, and minorities make up 90 per cent of the country's population, yet remain excluded from key decision-making processes, including the Union Budget. Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday reiterated the party's demand for a nationwide caste-based census and the removal of the 50 per cent cap on reservations. He also launched an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi , accusing him of denying rights to backward communities and misleading the country. "I am happy that a large number of people have gathered here and they understand their rights. Conducting a caste-based census in the country and abolishing the 50 per cent reservation limit is our demand. Narendra Modi does not want to give reservations to those who are educationally backwards, but we stand with them," Kharge said. He stressed that the voice of the OBC community will only be heard when they are elected to power.

‘Repeatedly insults OBC': BJP mocks Congress after Udit Raj calls Rahul Gandhi ‘second Ambedkar'

In a sharp criticism of the Congress party, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia on Saturday accused the grand old party of repeatedly insulting the other backward classes (OBC) community, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who belongs to the same community. 'The most corrupt party held a conference on the OBC society yesterday. Rahul Gandhi himself has always insulted the OBC community and the Prime Minister, who comes from the OBC community. There are many serious charges against him, including corruption, and he is out on bail,' news agency ANI quoted Bhatia as saying. He also questioned the Congress leader's praise for leaders like Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, both of whom he said are facing corruption allegations. "Rahul Gandhi said that your ideals are sitting here. According to Rahul Gandhi, that ideal is Siddaramaiah, who is accused of the Muda scam. Bhupesh Baghel and his son are accused of many scams... The government has resolved to make the country corruption-free, but Rahul Gandhi says that those who are corrupt have the qualities to become leaders," Bhatia added. Congress leader Udit Raj on Saturday said that Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the 'second Ambedkar' for the OBCs if they listen to what he said during the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan'. Raj compared Rahul to Babasaheb Ambedkar and said that the OBCs must support the statements made by the Leader of Opposition. "Caste census in Telangana is an X-ray of society. "OBCs will have to think that history does not give opportunities for progress again and again. They should follow and support what Rahul Gandhi said in the Talkatora Stadium conference. If they do so, then Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them," Raj posted on X. Senior BJP leader and MP Ravi Shankar Prasad on Saturday also hit out at Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of abandoning political decorum and showing frustration at PM Modi's rise from humble beginnings to global leadership, as reported by ANI. Prasad said, "Their leader, Rahul Gandhi, has forgotten decency. There is a frustration that a leader born in a poor, backwards family has become the leader of the world today." The BJP leader further claimed that the Congress party is 'frustrated' by the fact that PM Modi 'has outnumbered the days of Indira Gandhi as PM', adding that Congress is uncomfortable with India's increasing global influence. Congress had on Friday organised the 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan', which was inaugurated by party president Mallikarjun Kharge. The concluding address of the event was delivered by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, the ANI report said. During this address, the Congress leader admitted that not conducting a caste census during the UPA government was a mistake and said he is now determined to correct it. Rahul said he had failed to understand the issues of the OBC community earlier, unlike those of Dalits, tribals, and women, where he claimed the Congress had done commendable work. Guarantee schemes improved people's purchasing power, helped Karnataka topper capita income, says CM Siddaramaiah

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the five guarantee schemes implemented by the Congress government in the State were responsible for Karnataka becoming number one in per capita income in the country. He spoke after inaugurating and laying foundation stones for development works at Arasikere in Hassan district on Saturday. The Chief Minister said that the State ranked number one in terms of the per capita income in the country, as the purchasing power of the people increased due to the guarantee schemes. 'The people of BJP do not understand economics, and they are engaged in spreading false propaganda that the government lacks money for development works. The people will not be misled by such statements,' he maintained. Mr. Siddaramaiah said that the government was spending ₹1.2 lakh crore for development, besides ₹56,000 crore for guarantee schemes. The development works had reached people's doorsteps, he added. Referring to Congress' 'Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan' held in Delhi, the Chief Minister said that only his party designed programmes to ensure social justice for and progress of the oppressed. Rahul Gandhi, too, had articulated his understanding of the backward classes clearly in the conference, Mr. Siddaramaiah stated. Citing the development works being taken up in Arasikere constituency, the Chief Minister said that Congress MLA K.M. Shivalinge Gowda had a bright political future. He had all the qualities required to be a Minister, and also had the blessings of the people in the constituency, Mr. Siddaramaiah said. Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, while addressing the gathering, stated that Mr. Shivalinge Gowda had brought more development works for his constituency Arasikere, compared to the Kanakapura and Varuna constituencies, being represented by the Deputy Chief Minister and Chief Minister respectively. 'Today is a historic day for Arasikere. Mr. Shivalinge Gowda has worked hard to get development works sanctioned for the constituency. He fought for water from Yettinahole and Hemavathi for the benefit of the people of his constituency,' Mr. Shivakumar said. Mr. Shivakumar stated that the Congress had implemented the guarantee schemes after understanding the needs of the people. 'We are into politics to improve the lives of the people, while the BJP plays with their emotions. The BJP has not implemented any project similar to the guarantee schemes launched by the Congress,' he said. Minister for Cooperation K.N. Rajanna, Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan, MLA for Arasikere and Karnataka Housing Board Chairman K.M. Shivalinge Gowda, MP for Hassan Shreyas Patel, and officers were present at the programme.
