We will make BJP chant ‘Joy Bangla' after 2026: Abhishek Banerjee at Trinamool Martyr's Day rally

Kolkata Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee gave a call from the party's annual Shahid Dibas (Martyr's Day) celebration on July 21 and said that he will force the Bharatiya Janta Party to chant 'Joy Bangla' after the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections. Speaking to a massive crowd at the heart of Kolkata, party second-in-command, Mr Banerjee said that the BJP will not cross 50 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections. Setting the election strategy and narrative tone of the party for the upcoming elections, the TMC leader said that if BJP is trying to put Bengali people speaking people in detention camps, they will go a step further and democratically put BJP in a detention camp by making them lose the elections. 'BJP used to say Jay Shri Ram earlier but now they are saying Joy Maa Kali, Joy Maa Durga. Mark my words today—in just 10 months, I will make them say Joy Bangla after 2026 elections,' Mr Banerjee said. He also added that in the 2021 elections they had said 'Khela hobe' (Game on) but for the 2026 elections they are saying 'Poddo phool upre fela hobe' [Will rip out the lotus flower – referring to the BJP party symbol]. Putting emphasis on his party's inclusive ideology, Mr Banerjee said, 'We don't do politics of religion or hatred. We maintain our religion at home, but in politics we have only one religion—humanity, to serve the people.' He accused that the Assam's BJP-led Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has labelled Bengali-speaking people as Bangladeshis, however, the BJP government has not taken any action against his 'discriminatory comments'. 'Chant Joy Bangla so loudly that the echoes of the slogans reach up to Delhi,' Mr Banerjee said as supporters at the Martyr's Day rally cheered on. Mr Banerjee also accused that the Union Government is using the State machinery under its power to strip the voters and opposition of their basic rights. 'On one hand, BJP uses ED to suppress the Opposition leaders and on the other, they use EC to snatch away the voting rights of the people. There are two Es — Election Commission and Enforcement Directorate. They are using these two Es to put Opposition leaders behind bars and take away the voting rights of Opposition voters and normal voters of the country,' Mr Banerjee said.

CPI(M)'s Md Salim says SIR Electoral Roll revision will target marginalised people and strip democratic rights

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) West Bengal State Secretary, Md Salim, accused on Thursday (July 17, 2025) that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) Electoral Roll revision is a strategic method to remove all marginalised people from the voter lists and strip them of their democratic rights. 'We have to accept that India is a multilingual country, the union government's tactic of one nation, one election, one language cannot work here. This attack on Bengalis across the country is an attack on the diversity, democracy, and unity of our country,' Mr Salim said. He also added that tagging all Bengali-speaking people as Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshis is a way to 'other' a certain class of people and attack them. He alleged that Bharatiya Janta Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh supported organisations are putting various labels on Bengalis and pushing them out of BJP-ruled states, and sometimes outside India into Bangladesh, and in some cases, they are being tagged in the category of doubtful voters. 'We have a lot of partition refugees, these displaced Bengalis were given a place to stay in Andaman, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh during the partition crisis. How can they abuse the same people for speaking Bengali and call them Bangladeshis?' Mr Salim said while addressing a press conference in Kolkata. He also said that at some point, it will affect all communities, and not just Bengalis. He accused that once the Matua community was given cards to prove their identity, now the same government is attacking them in various BJP-ruled States. Mr Salim said that the measure to revise the electoral voter list through the SIR is a measure to remove the marginalised people from the voter lists and take away their voting rights. 'Under SIR, everyone will have to prove their citizenship. Back in the day, in any democratic State, the government needed to prove a person's citizenship; now the onus is solely on the people,' Mr Salim said while responding to a question by The Hindu. He added that the magnitude at which the central government is planning to implement the SIR electoral roll revision will affect everyone. 'If it burns my house today, soon it will burn all other houses,' Mr Salim concluded. War of words West Bengal and its politicians have been engaging in a political war of words over the past few weeks after several cases of Bengali-speaking migrant workers being targeted in States like Odisha, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Chhatisgarh came to light. On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee hit the streets in Kolkata to protest against the attack on Bengali migrants in various BJP-ruled States. The Trinamool Congress chairperson warned of dire consequences if targeting of Bengali migrants did not stop. 'The poor who go to work outside. They will be made to work and then sent to jail if they speak in Bengali. Why? What is your [BJP] right? Is West Bengal not in India? Why so much hatred against Bengalis,' Ms. Banerjee said. The TMC leadership is raising the issue of attack on 'Bengali identity' along with the attack on migrants. The issue of Bengali identity and pride had helped the party tide over the BJP in the 2021 Assembly polls. On the day, the TMC leader held a march to protest against the attack on migrants, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari met the State's Chief Electoral Officer demanding a thorough revision of the voter list in West Bengal in the same way that it is being implemented in Bihar.

PM Modi helm ushers unprecedented growth, says Punjab BJP chief

Chandigarh: The 11-year governance of the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has ushered in a period of unprecedented growth in the country. India has become the fourth-largest economy in the world, Punjab unit party President Sunil Jakhar said on Tuesday. Lauding the phenomenal growth rate of the country, he told the media here that 'our nation has crossed even Japan in term of growth'. 'This is no coincidence but absolute commitment to work on policies, principles and prioritise to ensure that decisions which usher in change for the country were taken in the past 11 years.' While recalling various achievements of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) rule, Jakhar said it was a great achievement that 81 crore people were being given free rations, 55 crore had been given health insurance advantages, four crore houses for the disadvantaged were built, 50 crore households were provided drinking water facilities and crores of toilet's have been built across the nation. Jakhar reasoned that India's 6.5 GDP has led to industrial growth which has translated into employment for the people. 'The infrastructure of the nation, be it the extensive construction of highways or bridges, has changed the entire landscape of the country, ushering in progress and prosperity. A voluminous 55,000 km of highways and expressways is a phenomenal achievement.' Hailing the vision of Prime Minister Modi, the Punjab BJP chief said in 2014 there were only eight AIIMS in the country. 'Today we have 24, three times more in 11 years. In Punjab, we have an AIIMS Bathinda, which is a huge medical facility and soon more hospitals of this level will be established in other towns in the state.' Jakhar emphasised that women rights and equality were a keen concern of the BJP and the women reservation Bill to be passed. 'The social fabric of the country has become more progressive with equality and distribution of wealth and opportunity for all is a reality. The ease-of-living and ease-of-doing business has improved the lives of millions. The substantial increase in MSP (minimum support price) has led to increased income in Punjab as we are primarily an agricultural economy. The food grain purchase in the state this year was Rs 68,771 crore till date, while in 2014 it was Rs 32,211 crore,' he explained. Answering a media query about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi that 11 years have not seen any progress, Jakhar said: 'The 6.5 growth rate, the fourth-largest economy in the world, the development in the infrastructure, women empowerment, passing of significant Bills are all to see but unfortunately, if someone wants to have a myopic view then it is lamentable.'
