3 youth detained for performing stunts in moving auto rickshaw on Thane Belapur road

Navi Mumbai: Three youths performing a life-threatening stunt in a moving auto rickshaw on the arterial Thane-Belapur road along Digha station on Saturday were detained by Rabale MIDC police after tracing them to their residences in Digha village on Sunday. The stunt video went viral on social media after it was recorded by a motorist behind the auto rickshaw and posted on X (formerly Twitter) handle @SabSeTezz1 by a social activist-cum-journalist, Binu Varghese from Thane. In the video clip, one youth is seen hanging behind the moving auto rickshaw while the youth at the wheel and another youth on the rear seat are seen leaning outside the vehicle. Sunil Waghmare, Senior Inspector of Rabale MIDC, informed that from the video clip of the stunt, the auto rickshaw's registration number led them to the auto rickshaw driver identified as Amit Kumar Ghuria (22), who was apprehended from Ganesh Nagar in Digha. He revealed the names and addresses of his two friends involved in the stunt, leading to the detention of Akash Chauhan (22), also from Ganesh Nagar, Digha, and Omkar Bhaprap (22) from Ambedkar Nagar, Digha. The three accused were booked under relevant sections of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita for rash and negligent driving or riding on a public way, acts that endanger human life or personal safety, along with the Motor Vehicle Act for dangerous driving. The notice directs them to cooperate in the police investigation and remain present in court when summoned after a chargesheet is filed against them."

Village under scanner for ‘illegal' apple trees also a symbol of prosperity the fruit brought

As one departs from the Shimla-Kotkhai road, bypassing Kotkhai town, to Chaithla, a narrow 16-km-long two-way tarmac leads us to the serene and picturesque Chaithla valley, where apple and pear trees flourish at an elevation of approximately 6,900 feet — bringing prosperity to locals. On the way to Chaithla, small hamlets of Pungrish, Koku and Kupad, each brimming with fruit-laden trees and beautiful houses nestled in apple orchards covered by protective nets, mesmerise visitors. Here, houses are custom-made, catering to the needs of the fruit trade, featuring a garage, a storeroom full of crates for transporting fruits and makeshift structures for workers and their families employed for the upkeep of orchards. Ironically, however, more than two dozen firearms were taken into possession from residents of this serene Chaithla village, home to around 34 households, under Section 164 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to ensure peaceful execution of the Himachal Pradesh High Court's order to clear forest land of encroached apple plantation, according to a senior police officer. Section 164 of the BNSS, effective from July 12 to 18, prohibits the carrying of arms in and around Chaithla and requires all licensed weapons to be deposited at the Kotkhai police station. Chaithla is one of the first villages where the eviction drive was launched to clear encroached forest land by locals by felling apple trees, following the HC direction. 'After the 1990s, people in Himachal truly began to see prosperity in cultivating apple orchards, and a handful of residents in Chaithla could not remain untouched by this wave,' said a member of Pandli Gram Panchayat, under which Chaithla falls. 'A key contributing factor was the Timber Distribution (TD) Rights, which allowed locals residing in forested areas to use fallen trees, mainly deodar, for house construction and other purposes. Over time, people began exploiting these rights, clearing forest land adjacent to their holdings and planting apple trees. And, Chaithla made rapid strides forward due to its unique climatic conditions as it is located at the top of the Chaithla valley.' Apple trees in Chaithla are part of the first generation of plantations, and are now 35 to 40 years old, producing largely the Royal Delicious variety apples of the highest quality in large quantities. 'Some of the trees, now facing the axe, were planted on forest land and yield between 25 and 30 cartons per season, each weighing around 20 kg. The price of a single carton ranges from Rs 3,200 to Rs 4,800, especially for the Royal Delicious variety commonly grown in Chaithla,' said an orchard owner standing next to one of his ageing apple trees supported by wooden props embedded in the soil. 'You can estimate that a fully grown tree, about 40 to 45 years old, produces apples worth around Rs 1.20 lakh annually. Some villagers enjoyed this income for years, but they have now lost more than 100 such trees in the eviction drive,' he said. Acknowledging the loss of his trees, he said, 'As apple trees grow older, they need support to stand. Every season, the weight of fruits increases the strain on old and weaker branches. The older the tree, the more fruit it bears.' Explaining the reason behind the prosperity of apple growers in villages like Chaithla, Deepak Singha, a horticulturist and fruit grower in the Kotgarh region, said, 'There are specific reasons why Chaithla witnessed success in recent decades. First, most of the apple trees here are of the first generation, planted in the 1910s or 1920s in Kotgarh and some parts of Kullu. As trees in those regions aged and ended their natural life, the first-generation trees attract more attention for their superior fruit quality.' 'Second, the trees in Chaithla were grown from seedlings rather than rootstocks. Fruit trees grown from seedlings are more valuable and produce better quality apples than those grown from rootstocks, which have started arriving in the market in the past one decade,' he added. However, unlike others, who call for a delay in the eviction drive and urge the government to take over mature orchards instead of destroying them, Singha holds a stricter view: 'I believe all illegal encroachments must be removed across the state. But I do have concerns for landless marginalised farmers cultivating apples in less than five bighas of forest land. The government should introduce a policy to support such farmers.' The ongoing eviction drive in Chaithla, where approximately 300 bighas of forest land, roughly 20 hectares, have been encroached upon, will continue till July 18. A forest officer says, 'Chaithla is a far-flung village on the hilltop, making communication difficult, like many remote areas in Himachal. The road in this village was constructed in the 1990s.' The drive stems from a complaint lodged by Krishan Chand Sarta of Jhadag village under Jubbal tehsil in 2014, alleging mass encroachment of forest land by villagers cultivating apples, potatoes and peas, and raising permanent structures. The complaint also flagged the inaction by the forest department officials.

Cenotaph row: Prohibitory orders clamped in Basanpeer village

1 2 Jaisalmer: Amid tensions over a 'chhatri' (cenotaph) dispute in Basanpeer village of Jaisalmer, the district administration Wednesday imposed Section 163 of Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to maintain public order. The prohibitory orders were issued by sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Saksham Goyal who cited concerns about the potential breakdown of law and order in the area. Goyal said the tense situation in the area might lead to attempts to disturb peace, adversely affecting public safety, order and communal harmony. The situation has not normalised since the stone-pelting incident involving women and children of Basanpeer on July 10 during the cenotaph construction dispute, and the matter has now taken a political turn. In response to former minister Kailash Choudhary's call to visit Basanpeer Wednesday and former minister Harish Choudhary's call to visit on July 19, the administration imposed Section 163 in Basanpeer village to prevent the situation from deteriorating. Following the imposition of Section 163 in Basanpeer village, Harish Choudhary sought permission from the district administration to visit Basanpeer. He wrote, "The attempt to tear apart the unity and social harmony of our Thar family in Basanpeer is a matter of concern for all of us. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 4BHK+Family Lounge+Utility room at 4.49Cr (All Incl)* ATS Triumph, Gurgaon Book Now Undo For everyone living in the Thar, its culture and civilisation transcend caste and religion. To maintain our Thar's unity, brotherhood, and love, I have requested permission from the district collector to organise a Gandhi Ramdhun and interfaith prayer on July 19. " Under Section 163, no person within the boundaries of Basanpeer Juni village shall carry or display explosive substances, firearms like revolvers, pistols, rifles, guns, ML guns or other weapons such as axes, swords, spears, daggers, knives, etc., in public places. No assemblies, rallies or processions be held without prior permission. However, individuals from the Sikh community will be allowed to carry the kirpan as per their religious tradition. Former Union minister Kailash Choudhary accused Congress of exploiting the situation for political gains.

Kanwariyas attack car in Ghaziabad as police look on

A group of Kanwariyas allegedly vandalised a car with sticks and baseball bats in full public view in Ghaziabad's Modinagar on Sunday afternoon, even as police stood by. No complaint was received in the matter and so the Kanwariyas were allowed to continue their journey, senior police officers said later. A video of the incident shows a mob vandalising a car on a busy street. (HT photo) According to police, the incident happened around 3pm Sunday when Nitin Kumar, a Kanwariya from Delhi's Uttam Nagar, was resting on a road divider in Modinagar. A Swift car reportedly hit the divider near him, prompting other Kanwariyas to assume that Kumar had been injured. Police said this triggered a rampage and Kanwariyas started vandalising the car using baseball bats and sticks. .Videos of the incident surfaced on Monday, showing the car surrounded by Kanwariyas and local residents. Several policemen appear present but uninvolved. HT could not independently verify the authenticity of the videos. 'The car hit the divider where a Kanwariya was resting. Others assumed he was hurt and damaged the vehicle. Police pacified them and they moved on. No complaint has been received so far. We will examine if an FIR can be lodged,' said Surendra Nath Tiwary, deputy commissioner of police (rural). This is the second such incident in Modinagar this month. On the night of July 8, Kanwariyas from Haryana allegedly assaulted a car driver and vandalised his Swift after it brushed past one of them. Police later said the driver was drunk and booked him under section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) for preventive arrest. In response to the incidents, Ghaziabad police have imposed major traffic diversions. The Meerut-Ghaziabad carriageway has been reserved for returning Kanwariyas since Monday afternoon, and the entry of heavy vehicles has been restricted on the Delhi-Meerut Road, Delhi-Meerut Expressway, and Muradnagar–Tila Morh routes from July 11. 'Light vehicles and two-wheelers going to and coming from Meerut will be allowed on both sides of the Ghaziabad-Meerut carriageway. Cones have been installed to separate the two directions and traffic police are on the ground to ensure smooth flow,' said additional DCP (traffic) Sacchidanand.

SKM condemns police action against farmers' protest in Nuh

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organisation of farmers' unions, on Tuesday condemned the police action against the farmers holding a sit-in agitation inside Industrial Model Township (IMT) in Nuh's Rozka Meo. Farmers of over nine villages have been agitating for the past several months seeking enhanced compensation for over 1,600 acres of land acquired in 2010 for the industrial township. Nuh Police spokesperson Krishan Kumar said, based on complaints filed by the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HSIIDC), 10 people were arrested over the past couple of months for obstructing construction work at IMT. 'The district administration had also imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita in and around the IMT, preventing the gathering of five or more persons,' said Mr. Kumar, adding that the farmers continued to hold an agitation at another site outside the IMT. 'Police act angered locals' 'The peaceful dharna led by senior leaders of Haryana SKM was launched against the construction work being carried out at the IMT amid the presence of a heavy police force. The tents, chairs, cots and other necessary things were removed from the place. This cowardly conduct of the police has angered the local villagers, including women,' Haryana SKM said in a statement. Senior SKM leader Comrade Hannan Mollah, accompanied by Inderjit Singh, Sumit Singh and Manoj Kumar, arrived at the Rozka Meo protest site during the day and inquired about the police action. Mr. Mollah praised the agitating farmers for displaying unity and courage in the face of police action which, he said, had failed to browbeat the 'justified' struggle. Mohammed S.P., one of the members of the committee spearheading the agitation, claimed that the local police descended on the agitation site in large numbers late at night on Tuesday and detained over a dozen farmers. 'The police also opened fire in the air. The tents, coolers and even the hookah at the site were taken away by the police,' said Mr. Mohammed S.P., a resident of Kherli Kankar village. The 34-year-old farmer leader said the land belonging to hundreds of farmers was acquired by the HSIIDC for ₹25 lakh per acre in 2010, and the compensation was later enhanced to ₹46 lakh per acre after prolonged agitation. 'Though the farmers were paid ₹21 lakh per acre of the enhanced compensation, the outstanding amount has not been paid to date. Also, the illiterate farmers were tricked into signing certain documents about a no litigation clause in any court of law towards enhancement of the compensation,' alleged Mr. Mohammed S.P. He said the farmers were demanding that they be allowed the right to legal recourse and be paid the remaining compensation. Nuh Deputy Commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena, after a meeting with the farmers' committee during the day, said the district administration would take necessary legal action in case the protesting farmers violate the law and order. Although some of their demands were unacceptable, issues like giving plots under the Rehabilitation and Resettlement Policy, opening skill centres for youth and providing job opportunities to unskilled people could be discussed, he said.
