PM Modi targets RJD, Congress at rally in Bihar, credits NDA for progress

Modi also slammed the RJD for allegedly insulting Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar and said the people of the state would not tolerate the insult to the Dalit icon Press Trust of India Siwan Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) at a public rally in Siwan, accusing them of pushing Bihar into poverty and lawlessness during their rule. Addressing the public meeting, the PM said the people of Bihar have ended the jungle raj created by the Congress-RJD combine. Modi also slammed the RJD for allegedly insulting Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar and said the people of the state would not tolerate the insult to the Dalit icon. The RJD and the Congress are responsible for the large-scale migration of labourers from Bihar and for the persistent poverty that plagued the state for decades, Modi alleged. He claimed that the RJD-Congress governance model was focused on "enriching their own families while ignoring the needs of the people". During the Congress's licence raj, their leaders became rich, but the public remained poor, he added. The RJD insulted Babasaheb and the people of Bihar will never forgive its leaders. Leaders of RJD and Congress keep photographs of the architect of the Country's Constitution near their feet. I keep his photograph close to my heart," the PM claimed. Taking a dig at RJD's political approach, Modi said, We believe in Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas', but they believe only in Parivaar Ka Vikas'. Modi warned that the RJD and the Congress, which according to him were responsible for Bihar's troubled past, are again eyeing power. They created the jungle raj, and now they want to return. But the people of Bihar will give them a fitting reply in the assembly elections, he said. The Bihar assembly elections are due in a few months. Highlighting the achievements of the NDA government, Modi claimed that Bihar has witnessed significant infrastructure development in recent years. Under the NDA, 55,000 km of rural roads were constructed, over 1.5 crore households were electrified, and piped water reached 26 crore people, he said. Modi said that the entire world was acknowledging India's development journey. During my recent foreign visit, several world leaders praised India's progress, he noted. AAP-led Punjab govt, Punjab Congress, Akali Dal object to 'One Nation One Election' in meeting with JPC

CHANDIGARH: The AAP-led Punjab government, Punjab Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal registered their strong objections to the 'One Nation One Election' proposal tabled by the BJP-led central government during a meeting with members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Saturday. After attending a meeting convened by the Joint Parliamentary Committee under the chairmanship of PP Choudhary, Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema described it as a direct assault on the fundamental structure and spirit of the Constitution of India as framed by Babasaheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar. Cheema said that he, along with AAP State President Aman Arora, completely rejected the move. "This proposal by the BJP-led Union government is a hidden agenda designed to destroy the federal structure of the nation as enshrined in the Constitution of India, meticulously architected by Baba Saheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar," he said. Referring to the amendments in the proposed Bill, Cheema said that the suggested amendments would effectively render the tenures of state assemblies subject to the discretion of the Union government, an alarming overreach incompatible with the federal framework enshrined in the Constitution. He said that this bill will further encourage the misuse of Article 356 and 360 by the Union government. As per section 5 of part 2, if the Election Commission is of the opinion that the elections to any Legislative Assembly cannot be conducted along with the general election to the House of the People, it may make a recommendation to the President, to declare by an order, that the election to that Legislative Assembly may be conducted at a later date. Citing this amendment, Cheema said that the BJP's One Nation One Election concept would ultimately backfire, as it would enable the Union government to conduct state elections at its convenience a year or two after general elections, rather than fulfilling the purpose of the proposal as being publicised.

BSP was compelled to bring back Akash Anand: Nagina MP

Azad Samaj Party (ASP) chief Chandra Shekhar Azad on Sunday attacked recently appointed Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief national coordinator Akash Anand, and stated that people had rejected him. 'Due to compulsions, the BSP opened its doors for him even after his expulsion. There is no option for the BSP,' said Azad, who's also the Lok Sabha member from Nagina. Azad was speaking at the 'Astitva Bachao - Bhai Chara Banao' (Save Existence – Build Brotherhood) - Parbudh Jan Sammelan at the KGMU Convention Center auditorium here. The BSP is projecting Akash as the young face of the party to take on the challenges posed by Azad, who is working to expand the base of his party among the Dalit community. Soon, Anand is expected to be made the political heir of BSP chief Mayawati. Lashing out at the BSP, Azad said the ASP would fulfil the dreams of Dalit icons Bhim Rao Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram. The ASP organised the Sammelan in the state capital to send a message to the Dalit community. Along with the dominant Jatav community members, members of Dalit, OBC and Muslim communities were also invited to the meeting. While the BSP is battling to save its national party status and resolve the infighting in the party, Azad is seeing an opportunity to expand the base of his party in the area that has been dominated by the BSP. The ASP chief called upon the party members to strengthen the organisation before the 2027 assembly election. 'Political power will empower the weaker section. Several people belonging to the Dalit community have died in police custody in Uttar Pradesh. The police have become a tool of the government to commit atrocities on the weak. The people should unite to grab power in the 2027 assembly election,' he said. The deliberate attempt not to conduct a caste-based census of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) by the central government was a well-planned conspiracy against the principles of social justice, he noted and added this was an attempt to suppress the actual number of Bahujan Samaj and their rights. 'The present government is engaged in making reservations ineffective and weakening the basic spirit of the Constitution. We have to remain constantly vigilant and organised to protect the constitutional rights given by Bhim Rao Ambedkar,' he said. 'It is necessary that scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and backward classes get reservation in the private sector too, so that inclusive development can be ensured,' he added. Raising questions over electronic voting machines (EVMs), the MP said they were against the transparency of democracy and public trust. 'This system seems to be a part of the conspiracy of the ruling class, whose aim is to control the election process,' he said.

An Ambedkar statue is at centre of escalating standoff at Madhya Pradesh High Court's Gwalior Bench

Plans of installing a statue of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar appears to have pitted two groups of lawyers against one another at the Gwalior Bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court for the last month, sparking protests and sit-in agitations on the premises. The dispute took yet another turn earlier this week, when a group of lawyers allegedly tried to block the site of the statue by hoisting the national flag there. According to one group of lawyers, application to have a statue of Ambedkar installed in the premises was sent to the high court in February after which a committee to examine the request allowed it. Soon, the local public works department was enlisted and a sculptor was also paid Rs 2 lakh, one lawyer said. However, objections to the move allegedly forced the committee was forced to review its decision although the registrar at Madhya Pradesh High Court, Yuval Raghuvanshi, passed an order allowing the statue. In a letter dated April 21, the registrar had recommended: 'Since the statue of Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar, who is the maker of the Indian Constitution has already been installed in the Supreme Court of India, therefore, if a few advocates are opposing, we should ignore the same and work to be completed accordingly'. Marking Constitution Day on November 26, 2023, President of India Droupadi Murmu unveiled a statue of BR Ambedkar at the Supreme Court premises in New Delhi. Soon, however, a section of lawyers allegedly began objecting and refused to pay for the statue, which was scheduled to be installed on May 17. The situation, now simmering for nearly a month, allegedly came to a head Tuesday when the section of lawyers opposing the move hoisted a national flag at the appointed spot. Videos of the incident purportedly showed some lawyers walking towards a platform and trying to hoist the national flag while a group of women dressed in blue oppose the move and some policemen try to calm frayed tempers. Soon, the first group of lawyers purportedly manage to hoist the flag amid chants of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai', according to the video. There are only 15-20 people who are opposing the move, advocate Vishwajit Ratonia, who is among the group of lawyers that wants the statue, claimed. 'The first question is in the temple of justice if Baba Saheb's state is not installed then whose statue will be installed?' he asked, adding: 'Most of the bar association members are with us'. He also claimed that those opposing the move have been shifting goalposts since. 'They keep changing their reasons. First, they said they were against the statue. Then, they said they were against it because of lack of building permission. Then they said they were not taking into consideration. The court premises doesn't belong to the bar association. Its owner is the high court,' he said. Meanwhile, advocate Anil Mishra, who is among the lawyers opposing the statue, said the spot was a site for the national flag. 'Why should an Ambedkar statue be installed? Is this private property? Give me permission I will also bring 90 percent of the lawyers and will install a statue of Lord Ram. If you bring anti-social elements from outside, then there will be allegations of manhandling. If they want to keep the peace, then they should disperse,' he said, adding that the court had 'never given permission to install the state of Ambedkar'. After the flag was installed, Ratonia said he 'welcomed' it but continued to call for the statue to be installed. 'We had said that with the statue of Ambedkar, also install the national flag. However, there is already a national flag that has been installed. This is the second flag that has been installed [at the HC]. We welcome this,' he said.
