Sri Ram Sene's protest march stopped by police in Belagavi

Belagavi: Hundreds of Sri Ram Sene activists, led by their chief Pramod Mutalik, attempted to launch the 'Ingali Chalo' protest march from Belagavi on Thursday, condemning the recent assault on cow vigilantes at Ingali village in Hukkeri taluk. However, police detained the activists before the march could commence. The protest was in response to the incident where five Sri Ram Sene members were allegedly tied to a coconut tree and assaulted by locals in Ingali village. Belagavi police have since arrested four accused and registered a suo-motu case in connection with the attack. According to Belagavi superintendent of police Dr Bhimashankar Guled, the conflict was triggered after the activists allegedly entered the residence of a Muslim family, causing panic among women inside. He said this intrusion provoked the reaction from villagers. The SP also raised concerns about the background of one of the assaulted individuals, who is a rowdy sheeter, and questioned whether he officially represented the Sri Ram Sene. Rejecting the SP's version of events as 'false' and 'misleading,' Sri Ram Sene launched the 'Ingali Chalo' campaign. Protesters first formed a human chain at Rani Channamma Circle, raised slogans against the govt, and later marched to the deputy commissioner's office to submit a memorandum. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo As they proceeded toward Ingali, police detained several leaders, including district president Gangadhar Kulkarni and Ravikumar Kokitkar. Earlier, while addressing the gathering, Pramod Mutalik condemned the attack on SRS workers, stating, "This is not Pakistan or Afghanistan. Assaulting cow vigilantes in such a Taliban-style manner is unconstitutional. The govt must take strict action. If this repeats, the Hindu community will respond." In response to SP Guled's remarks questioning the involvement of a rowdy sheeter in the vigilante group, Mutalik defended the individual. "Today, police are branding even Hindu activists like Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat and Chakravarthy Sulibele as rowdies. This is an attempt to divert public attention from the real issue." He alleged that the administration is trying to protect the accused and suppress cow protection efforts by discrediting the activists.

Karnataka: Four held after Hindutva outfit members attacked for breaking into cattle owner's home

Four persons were arrested in Karnataka's Belagavi district on Monday for allegedly assaulting members of a Hindutva group after they reportedly intercepted a vehicle transporting cows and later forcibly entered the home of the cattle's owner, The Indian Express reported. Belagavi Superintendent of Police Bhimashankar Guled told the newspaper that those who were assaulted were members of the Sri Rama Sene. 'While Sri Rama Sene activists broke the law by barging into a house without permission, some villagers did the same by assaulting them,' Guled said. The police took cognisance of the case after a video of the incident, which took place last week, was shared on social media, PTI reported. The video purportedly shows five men being tied to a tree and attacked by a group. The police said that on June 26, members of the Sri Rama Sene stopped a vehicle, alleging that it was transporting cattle for slaughter. They later took the driver to a police station, where he maintained that the cows were being taken for dairy and taming purposes, The Indian Express reported. The cows were later taken to a cattle shelter. On June 28, members of the outfit allegedly barged into the house of Babasav Ramjan Multani, the cattle owner, after he brought the cows back from the shelter. Only women were reportedly present inside the home at the time. An unidentified police officer told The Indian Express that the villagers mistook the men for thieves and assaulted them. However, Sri Rama Sene leader Vithal Gaddi claimed that five of the outfit's members were attacked when they tried to stop the illegal transportation of cattle. Villagers, meanwhile, have claimed that the assault was unrelated to cattle transport and that the members had allegedly '', PTI reported.

Police protecting assault accused, says Sri Ram Sene functionary

Belagavi: Gangadhar Kulkarni, state president of Sri Ram Sene, alleged that Belagavi police, including SP Bhimashankar Guled, are protecting the accused in Ingali village of Hukkeri taluk who assaulted the Sri Ram Sene activists by tying them to a coconut tree. He claimed that SP Guled is giving false statements about the case, and they will launch an 'Ingali Chalo' protest march on July 3. Speaking to media at Kannada Sahitya Bhavan on Tuesday, Kulkarni said that an Ingali Chalo programme has been organised on July 3 to condemn the attack on cow vigilantes, under the leadership of Sri Ram Sene founder Pramod Muthalik. Belagavi SP Bhimashankar Guled is acting in favour of a community and violating the law. Sri Ram Sene activists have not entered anyone's house. They stood outside the house and spoke. However, the SP is fabricating false stories and hiding the truth, he alleged. Hindu activists and organisations are being targeted in the state's police system. "When we look at the incidents that took place from Mangaluru to Belagavi, we see that the atrocities against Hindu activists and leaders of Hindu organisations have increased. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Serbia: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House Search Now Undo Police officials immediately come to the rescue of the accused if they are Muslims in Belagavi. Pocso cases on the rise in Belagavi district

Belagavi: The number of Pocso cases in the state is increasing year by year, and Belagavi district has contributed significantly to this. In Belagavi district alone, 12 to 15 cases are reported every month, of which at least four are in Belagavi city. It is noteworthy that despite the high rate of registration of Pocso cases, only a few cases reach their logical end. The statistics from the police department reveal that around 434 cases were registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act from 2023 to the first week of June 2025. 157 cases were registered in 2023, 180 in 2024, and 97 till the first week of June 2025 in the jurisdiction of Belagavi district and city police commissionerate. The number of Pocso cases in the district has increased by 15 to 16% every year. According to police department sources, Bengaluru ranks first in terms of the number of Pocso cases, followed by Mysuru, Chikkaballapur, Tumkur, and Shivamoga. Belagavi district ranks sixth in the state in terms of Pocso case registrations. Statistics reveal that at least a hundred cases are registered every year in almost every district. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hae lainaa tänään – Netissä Resurs Bankista Resurs Bank Lue lisää Undo The number of cases in Belagavi district has increased every year, but the punishment to culprits in these cases has not increased. Dr Bhimashankar Guled, the superintendent of police Belagavi district, said that 12 criminals were convicted in 2024 in connection with Pocso cases that were registered from 2015 to 2024. In 2025, the court sentenced 9 criminals in connection with Pocso cases that were registered under different police station jurisdictions from 2015 to 2024. Out of the cases registered in 2023, only 5 were convicted so far. The remaining cases are pending in the courts. Of the cases registered in 2024, only 2 resulted in convictions so far, while the remaining cases are still pending. The cases registered in 2025 are still in the trial and investigation stage, and a verdict could be announced in the coming days. Legal experts said that there are many other reasons why cases are lost. It is common for the accused to be acquitted in Pocso cases due to false charges and loopholes in the chargesheet. Sexual assault by relatives and fear of influential people also lead to lack of witnesses during the trial. The parents of the victims do not take the case seriously. Many problems arise even at the investigation stage. The low conviction rate in registered cases is also being analysed as a reason for the increase in the number of cases.
