Who is ‘Neha' aka Abdul Kalam? Bangladeshi national who lived as transgender in India for decades arrested in Bhopal

The Bhopal Police arrested a Bangladeshi man, Abdul Kalam, who was living in India under the alias Neha for decades. He was held in the intervening night between Monday and Tuesday, during a crackdown on illegal migrants. According to several reports, Abdul Kalam, who is aged around 30-32 years presently, was arrested in Bhopal. He was living as transgender woman, Neha. Sources told India Today TV that Abdul entered India at the age of 10 and spent nearly 20 years in Mumbai before moving to Bhopal. He had been living in Bhopal for the past 10 years under the assumed identity of Neha Kinnar, the New Indian Express (TNIE) reported. Sources revealed that Abdul had reportedly maintained the identity of a transgender woman for years in Bhopal to avoid detection by local authorities. He was widely known as "Neha Kinnar" in the locality where he was staying. Acting on specific intelligence inputs from a specialised unit tracking foreign nationals residing illegally in the state, Abdul Kalam alias Neha Kinnar was traced to the Mangalwara locality in old Bhopal. A senior Bhopal police official told TNIE, 'The third gender individual was recently traced and has since then been questioned by a dedicated team of cops.' Abdul has been placed under 30-day detention while the authorities initiate formal deportation procedures, India Today reported. As per TNIE sources, the process of Abdul Kalam aka Neha Kinnar's deportation to Bangladesh is likely to start over the next few days, once the entire probe about the 10-year-long illegal stay in Bhopal is over. Bhopal police found that Abdul had constructed a false identity as an Indian citizen after forging documents including an Aadhaar card, voter ID, and even a passport. According to TNIE, Abdul Kalam managed to get the new identity of Neha Kinnar by getting various identity proof documents to give legal sanctity to the false identity. However, it remains unclear whether these documents were procured in Madhya Pradesh or elsewhere to legally him as an Indian citizen. It's alleged that Abdul had made multiple visits to Bangladesh during his decades-long stay using the forged Indian passport. Police official Shalini Dixit told India Today, 'We received credible information through a confidential informant, which led to his identification and subsequent arrest.' Initial questioning revealed that Abdul Kalam has lived in various parts of the country, including West Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra and MP. "He has been residing in Bhopal for nearly a decade, but prior to that, he lived in Maharashtra. During this time, he had also returned to Bangladesh, which he managed to do using forged Indian credentials," Dixit added. The official said the investigation is ongoing, and "we are closely coordinating with central agencies." According to India Today report, police are preparing to conduct a gender verification test to determine whether 'Neha' is biologically transgender or has been disguising himself as one to conceal his identity.

Neha was actually Abdul: Bangladeshi man arrested after 28 years in India

For almost 8 years, the residents of Bhopal's Budhwara area knew 'Neha' as a transgender woman living in their neighbourhood. But under the false identity of 'Neha', Abdul Kalam, a Bangladeshi national, was living in India for the past three decades. Abdul used his fake passport to travel back and forth to Bangladesh.(X) Neha was caught in a late-night operation by Bhopal Police earlier this week, India Today reported. Abdul, who is now under arrest, not only assumed a new gender identity but also forged Indian documents, including an Aadhaar card, voter ID, and even a passport. Authorities said that Abdul spent two decades in Mumbai before moving to Madhya Pradesh. He also assumed a transgender identity after becoming a member of the local hijra community. He used his fake passport to travel back and forth to Bangladesh without raising suspicion, the police said. Abdul posed as 'Neha Kinnar' in Bhopal's Budhwara locality, had lived in the city for nearly a decade. Before that, he reportedly spent close to 20 years in Mumbai after entering India illegally at the age of 10. His assumed identity as a transgender woman helped him evade detection by authorities and blend seamlessly into the local community, the publication reported. "We received credible information through a confidential informant, which led to his identification and subsequent arrest. He has been residing in Bhopal for nearly a decade, but prior to that, he lived in Maharashtra. During this time, he had also returned to Bangladesh, which he managed to do using forged Indian credentials. The investigation is ongoing, and we are closely coordinating with central agencies," senior police official Shalini Dixit told India Today. Authorities have also confirmed that throughout these 30 years, Abdul travelled to and from Bangladesh using his counterfeit Indian passport, raising significant concerns about the integrity of national documentation systems and border security. Given the implications for national security, the case is under the purview of the of Intelligence Bureau, the Anti-Terrorism Squad, and cybercrime units. Cybercrime specialists are now analysing Abdul's seized mobile phone, mining call logs and other related data. Police are also preparing to conduct a gender verification test to determine whether Abdul's transgender identity was genuine. Abdul, who has been placed under 30-day detention, is currently being held at Talaiya Police Station under high security, with restricted access permitted only to the station in-charge and two designated female officers, the publication further reported. The Centre has been notified of Neha's arrest.

'Neha', Living In India For 10 Years, Turns Out To Be Bangladeshi Man Abdul

Bhopal: In a startling revelation that could potentially expose an organised racket of illegal immigration and identity fraud, Bhopal Police has detained a Bangladeshi national, Abdul Kalam, who had been living in the city for the past eight years under the false identity of Neha, a transgender. Kalam, who entered India at the age of 10 and spent two decades in Mumbai before settling in Bhopal's Budhwara area, allegedly assumed a transgender identity and became an active member of the local hijra community. He acquired crucial documents-including an Aadhaar card, ration card, and even a passport-using forged documents with the help of local agents. Police investigations reveal that Abdul not only lived under a fake identity but also travelled abroad using a forged Indian passport. He shifted homes multiple times within the Budhwara locality and was known to all simply as "Neha." His gender is now being medically verified to determine whether he is biologically transgender or used this identity as a cover to evade detection. Sources in the police said Kalam was also involved in transgender activities in Maharashtra, which raises questions about whether his disguise was part of a larger network. Authorities are probing whether other members of the transgender community were complicit or unknowingly aided in the fraud. Two local youths who allegedly helped Abdul procure fake identity documents are currently being questioned. Investigators suspect this might just be the tip of the iceberg, with a broader network facilitating illegal immigration and document forgery. Call recordings and chats from Abdul's mobile phone are being scrutinised for leads. Abdul has been detained for 30 days under the Foreigners Act. Additional DCP Shalini Dixit said "He has been living in Bhopal for the last 8-10 years. Before that, he was in Maharashtra. We received a tip-off through an informer and initiated the identification process. He has also travelled to Bangladesh in the meantime, and we are awaiting reports from concerned departments," she said. Authorities have initiated the process for deportation, but not before thoroughly investigating the scope of the racket and Abdul Kalam's past activities, movements, and connections-both in India and abroad. The case has sent shockwaves through law enforcement agencies, not just because of the identity fraud, but also due to potential national security implications, with questions being raised about how a foreign national managed to live undetected for years in a major Indian city using forged documents. The Bhopal Police, along with central agencies, are now racing against time to uncover the full extent of the fraud-and whether this was an isolated incident or part of a deeper, more troubling network.

MP: Hindu girl students sexually exploited, says NHRC

Bhopal: Member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Priyank Kanoongo said on Wednesday that Hindu girls were being deliberately targeted and sexually exploited in Bhopal. Kanoongo's comments came against the backdrop of a high-profile racket of an alleged nexus of love jihad in Bhopal that was busted a few weeks ago, wherein nearly half a dozen girls students of a private engineering college complained that they were sexually exploited by a group of the Muslim community. He informed that upon receiving information, a team of NHRC arrived in Bhopal to investigate the matter, adding that the NHRC team would carry out an investigation for two days in Bhopal. He said that half a dozen victims have complained, but the number of victims is expected to increase. 'NHRC would request the victims and their parents to come forward to lodge complaints, while their identity would not be revealed. We had received the complaint, and a preliminary investigation revealed that Hindu girl students were being targeted and were being sexually abused. The accused persons not only sexually exploited them but also videographed, served intoxication and forced them to convert their religion,' Kanoongo told IANS. Kanoongo further stated that there are several aspects on which an investigation need to be done, adding that the NHRC team would make the entire thing very clear in the next two days. Meanwhile, he also questioned on Bhopal Police, saying what surprising that the local area police station was located hardly 500 meters away from the college, but the police did not take any action. "Crime was operating in the city, but the Bhopal Police was sitting quietly. I also have doubts that some evidences were destroyed by the police during their investigation. We will investigate it thoroughly and come out with a concrete report in the next two days," he added. Notably, after the shocking incident came into the fore a few weeks ago, the Madhya Pradesh government set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of senior police officials to investigate the matter. So far, five accused have been arrested for allegedly raping girl students by hiding their identities and blackmailing them by making videos. The main accused in the case, Farhan Ali, was arrested on May 3 in Bhopal.
