Asha Bhosle moves audience with a heartfelt performance at ‘Umrao Jaan' screening. Fans say ‘goosebumps all over'
Legendary singer Asha Bhosle, now 91, captivated hearts once again as she made a rare public appearance at the special screening of the restored version of the 1981 classic 'Umrao Jaan' in Mumbai. In a deeply emotional moment, Bhosle performed the film's hauntingly beautiful track 'Yeh Kya Jagah Hai Doston', while actress Rekha, who starred in the original film, stood by her side in a show of warmth and support. A video from the evening has since gone viral, showing Bhosle on stage with Rekha and Ali. Though she appeared to struggle momentarily while singing, Bhosle quickly recovered, continuing her rendition to thunderous applause. In a light-hearted moment, she joked, 'Mera gala dabba rahi hai,' referring to Rekha hugging her from behind — a moment that sparked shared laughter and cheers from the audience. Fans on social media expressed admiration for Bhosle's enduring grace and charm. One Instagram user commented, 'No words, she is brilliant. Goosebumps all over.' Umrao Jaan, set in 19th-century Lucknow, follows the journey of a young girl named Amiran, who is kidnapped and forced into a brothel, where she transforms into the famed courtesan and poet Umrao Jaan. Rekha's portrayal of the title character, supported by Farooque Shaikh, Raj Babbar, and Naseeruddin Shah, is widely considered one of her finest performances and won her the National Film Award for Best Actress. The film has been meticulously restored by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the National Film Archive of India (NFAI) under the National Film Heritage Mission. The re-release aims to bring the timeless story, music, and performances to a new generation of cinema-goers. The event was organised ahead of the film's theatrical re-release on June 27, and was attended by a host of Bollywood celebrities, including Anil Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Janhvi Kapoor, and Khushi Kapoor. Director Muzaffar Ali, who helmed the original film, was also present to celebrate the restoration and re-release of what is widely regarded as one of Hindi cinema's most iconic period dramas. For many in the audience, however, the highlight of the evening was not just the film itself, but the touching reunion of two cinematic legends — Asha Bhosle and Rekha — whose bond and artistry continue to inspire generations.

Overspeeding led to accident on Jejuri-Morgaon road: Police
Pune: The accident near Jejuri wherein a car rammed a stationary pickup van from behind on Wednesday evening was because of overspeeding said officials of RTO and Pune rural police after a joint inspection. Late on Wednesday night, one of the two injured children, Sarthak Kiran Raut (6) of Indapur, succumbed to injuries — taking the death toll to nine. A refrigerator was being unloaded from the van for an eatery along the Jejuri-Morgaon Road when the car crashed into the vehicle from the rear around 6.45pm on Wednesday. Pune regional transport officer (RTO) Archana Gaikwad and deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosle inspected the accident spot on Thursday morning. "One of our squads visited the spot on Wednesday night too. Initial investigations revealed the accident happened because of overspeeding. The car was likely at a speed of over 100 kmph. Its driver lost control over the vehicle and rammed the pickup van," Bhosle told TOI. "We have checked documents of both vehicles and the insurance and fitness certificates are valid. The driver was not drunk. We are yet to determine the exact speed of the car. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nuevo calefactor viral ayuda a miles a dormir sin sentir frío EcoHeat Undo Overspeeding seems to be the problem," Bhosle told TOI. Assistant inspector Deepak Waghchoure of Jejuri police said, "Investigations show the driver of the pickup van was not at fault. He had parked the vehicle off the road. Its tail light could not be seen since the rear doors were open for unloading. Doctors who performed postmortem at the primary health centre have certified multiple injuries as the cause of deaths. Bodies have been handed over to family members. The officer said, "If the car's speed was within limit, the pickup van would not have overturned. We could not get speedometer evidence from the car because it was destroyed in the crash." Kiran Bharat Raut (32), who was driving the car, was returning home to Pawar Wadi in Indapur along with his wife, son, daughter and two relatives after attending a marriage ceremony when the accident occurred. Raut was among those killed. Police identified the other deceased as Raut's son Sarthak (6) and sister-in-law Ashwini Santosh (23) and her husband, Akshay Shankar Raut (26). The others are eatery owner Somnath Vayse (55) and his employee, Ramu Sanjeevan Yadav (23), both of Nazra Supe in Jejuri taluka. Another eatery employee, Ajit Ashok Jadhav (32) of Kajale in Bhor taluka, and two passersby — Ajaykumar Chauhan (32) of Uttar Pradesh residing in Nazra Supe and Kiranlal Bikaner (35) of Rajasthan — also died. Chauhan and Bikaner were contractual employees at a Kirloskar company located near the accident spot. Ashwini and Akshay were residents of Solapur. The injured victims are Raut's wife Sonali (27), daughter Mahi (4) and cleaner of the pickup van Sachin Bajirao Tambat. They are undergoing treatment at hospitals in Baramati and their condition is reportedly stable. Meanwhile, Waghchoure said, "We reached the spot and tried to open the cars doors, which were jammed. We summoned an earth-moving elevator, broke the door and removed the victims. All the victims were taken to a hospital. Eight people, including a woman, were proclaimed dead on arrival by doctors. The ninth victim succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment." A case related to causing death due to negligence was registered against Raut, a farmer from Indapur. Travel Challenges Some of the all-party delegations that went abroad to convey India's message on cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan have returned after extensive travel. The trips to foreign nations had different kinds of challenges — from holding back-to-back meetings with a cross-section of people to logistical issues. One member said while the discourse on social media was that it was a 'pleasure trip', in reality it was a 'pressure trip' with several engagements scheduled through the day. Another MP said finding vegetarian meals was an issue that some members faced, but they managed. An MP said he survived mostly on cornflakes, fruits and once he ordered a 'veg-pizza'. Some MPs belonging to rival parties are also learnt to have 'bonded' during the tour. Adnana Sami says money isn't the ‘real reason' why he gave up Pakistan, chose India on Asha Bhosle's advice: ‘I gave up properties worth crores in Pak'
Adnan Sami, Pakistan-born singer and composer, became an Indian citizen in 2016. While he has received flak from across the border for the move, Sami has maintained that he's proud to be a part of India. Sami was even awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of the Republic of India, earlier this year. In a new interview, Sami revealed the real reason why he started making music in India. 'After the songs I released in 1998, people in the Pakistani music industry thought I'm finished. So they didn't provide any marketing for those songs. Nobody got to know when the album released and vanished. I was very dejected. I was in Canada at that time. I knew they'd done that on purpose,' recalled Sami. In the interview with India TV, Sami recalled discussing the issue with legendary singer Asha Bhosle. She had sung popular tracks like 'Kabhi To Nazar Milao' from his 1997 album Badaltey Mausam with Sami. 'I told Asha ji I'm dejected because people here have decided they don't want to work with me for whatever reason, and that I want to record with her in London,' said Sami. ''Why do you want to record in London?' she asked me. I said I know some people there. So she said, 'See, if you really want to do something new, come to Mumbai. This is the capital of Hindi music. Whatever gets popular here would spread out to the rest of the world. So this is the place to come,'' Sami recalled his conversation with Bhosle. 'Main boriya bistar le ke pahuch gaya Mumbai,' said Sami, claiming that Bhosle and her entire family took very good care of him. Bhosle was married to legendary music composer RD Burman, who died in 1994. 'She made me stay in RD Burman's home. I was very lucky because it was like a music temple,' recalled Sami. 'The songs that didn't work in Pakistan, like 'Kabhi To Nazar Milao', 'Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein', 'Lift Karadey', they were marketed so well that the rest is history. The way people embraced me and loved me, I could've never imagined it,' added Sami. Bheegi Bheegi Raaton Mein and Lift Karadey were part of Sami's 2000 hit album Always Yours. Sami revealed not just him, but legends like ghazal maestros Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Mehdi Hassan, and folk singer Reshma, did thrive in Pakistan, but their popularity grew by four times. 'You can't deny the audience and the masses are in huge quantity today. The attitude and respect for music here can't be matched anywhere else,' said Sami. He lamented the fact that Hassan and Reshma saw very horrific last days and deaths despite being masters of their profession. 'The audience loves them and has always praised them. But the authorities have never offered any help. These are just a few names. There have been many others like this, including actors,' added Sami. The singer also responded to the letter then-Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf wrote to his father in 2005, criticizing him for abandoning Pakistan. 'There was no truth to that letter. In 2005, I wasn't an Indian citizen. I was a Pakistani citizen. I don't know where he got the wrong information from. It's obvious that it's gone from the bottom to the top. That's why everyone just disowned me,' Sami recalled. Also Read — Adnan Sami's Pakistani fans told him they want to change citizenship as they 'hate their army': 'You left in good time' He revealed that he didn't apply for Indian citizenship for money as he left his inherited properties worth crores back in Pakistan. 'Money wasn't my driving force. In fact, when I came here, I had to start from scratch again,' said Sami. 'I was facing a lot of problems then as a Pakistani citizen, especially in a public profession. Everyone knows all your moves. I had even reached out to Musharraf for help,' said Sami. He consequently applied for Indian citizenship in 2015, which he was granted the next year.
