Family pay touching tribute to ‘strong & determined' hero firefighter Jennie Logan, 30, killed in horror Bicester blaze
A HEARTBROKEN family have paid tribute to Jennie Logan, a heroic firefighter who died in the Bicester fire. Jennie, 30, tragically lost her life while battling the blaze at Bicester Motion on Buckingham Road, Bicester, on Thursday, May 15. 9 9 9 Fellow Oxfordshire firefighter Martyn Sadler, 38, also died in the tragedy alongside businessman Dave Chester, 57. Jennie's Mum, Dad, and sister Emilie, have now released a heartbreaking tribute. In a statement, the devastated family said: 'Jennie was a much loved daughter to us, her sister, Emilie, and 'Mum' to her beloved dog, Mouse. 'We still can't believe we'll never see her again, driving around Bicester collecting her dogs, which were like a second family. 'Also, at such a young age, setting up her own dog business and making it such a success, was truly inspirational to us all. 'She found her calling three years ago when she joined the fire service where she could use her incredible strength and determination. 'Jennie was a force to be reckoned with but to everyone who knew her, she was such a loving, caring, thoughtful person, who would do anything and everything to help. 'She lived life at 100mph, juggling her business with her love for rugby, where she made some truly amazing friends. 'When Jennie's pager went off, there was no stopping her. Never did we think that when running out the door last Thursday, to give it her all, like she always did, it would be for the final time. 'Her bravery and fearlessness shone through right until the end. 'Our lives will never be the same, we'll miss her beautiful smile and zest for life. 'She will always be our hero and we are so immensely proud of her. 'Forever in our hearts.' This comes after the family of Dave Chester revealed he was trying to help the fire crews. 9 9 9 His family described the businessman as a "hero" in a heartfelt tribute. The 57-year-old had selflessly stepped in to help the firefighters, ultimately costing him his life. "Dave was always known as the man you went to when you needed any sort of help," the family said. They added: "This is exactly what happened on Thursday evening; he saw firefighters needing assistance and helped without hesitation. "He was not a victim but a hero; he died the way he lived – helping others and putting them ahead of himself." Meanwhile, police yesterday issued a major update on two firefighters who have remained in hospital following fire. Emergency services have since revealed that despite sustaining serious injuries, both are in "stable" condition. A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: "The injured firefighters remain in a stable condition in hospital." Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service later confirmed this. Flowers and handwritten tributes have been left outside Bicester Fire Station in memory of the three people who tragically lost their lives. Martyn's cousin penned a heartfelt message to his "role model and hero". Writing on Facebook, he said: "Thank you to everyone for the overwhelming number of messages following the devastating loss of my cousin, colleague, role model and hero Martyn Sadler at the fire in Bicester last night." Daniel Geoghegan, CEO of Bicester Motion also gave an emotional tribute to the lives lost in the tragedy. He said: "The last 24 hours have been tragic in so many ways. For the families of those we have lost, the incredible and brave emergency services who have worked tirelessly, our team who has worked relentlessly and the wider Bicester and Oxfordshire community which has shown the most generous support and kindness. "I wanted to first pay tribute to the three lives that have been lost. "To Jennie Logan and Martyn Sadler, the two firefighters who so bravely tackled the scene. The epitome of selfless service. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families and loved ones. "They have gone above and beyond under unprecedented circumstances. "No words can ever make up for what has happened, but they are all very much in our hearts." In a statement from Thames Valley Police, the force explained it had commenced an unexplained death investigation into the tragedy. It added that the investigation was currently not criminal, but that evidence could change this. Last week, Fire and Rescue Service Chief Fire Officer Rob MacDougall commended his colleagues for their " unwavering bravery" as he gave an emotional statement. Fighting back tears, he said: "A member of the public also sadly died in the incident. "Two further firefighters sustained serious injuries and are currently in hospital. "Ten fire crews attended the incident at Bicester Motion, having been called to the scene at 18:39. Four crews remain at the scene with the fire now under control." Jennie and Martyn were also both members of Bicester Rugby Union Football Club (BRUFC), with the former part of Bicester Vixens women's team. "We are a tight-knit club," BRUFC's chairman Paul Jaggers said. "Obviously losing two of your members in any situation is really tough and it's had a profound impact." A fundraiser launched by the club has now raised more than £11,000 for the Fire Fighters charity. The Bishop of Dorchester, the Right Reverend Gavin Collins, led a moving tribute today. He said: "As we come together today, we hold in our hearts those who lost their lives in last Thursday's fire. "We give thanks for all those who serve in our emergency services for their courage, commitment and compassion." RAF Bicester was predominantly used as a training site, but became redundant in 2004. The 350-acre former airfield in Oxfordshire became an active station over a century ago in 1917. Nineteen of the buildings on the site are Grade II listed, and some structures are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Bicester Heritage, more commonly known as Bicester Motion, is home to more than 50 specialist businesses which centre around classic car restoration and engineering. Historic England describes the iconic site as "the most complete and strongly representative example of an RAF airbase" in the country. 9 9 9

Tributes paid to three victims of Bicester blaze, including two firefighters
Tributes have been paid to the three people, including two firefighters, who were killed in a fire at a business park in Bicester. Firefighters Jennie Logan, 30, and Martyn Sadler, 38, were killed at the former RAF base in Oxfordshire. David Chester, 57, a father of two from Bicester, who worked at the site, also died. Two firefighters remain seriously injured in hospital. Dozens of floral tributes could be seen at the scene on Saturday. One message read: 'Sending all our love to those who don't think twice making that sacrifice to help others. 'Thinking of the fire service, their families, friends and the wider community and those services who came to help. Rest easy, from a local family.' Bicester rugby union football club, where Logan and Sadler were members and involved with the women's team, said it had heard the news with 'profound sadness'. In a statement posted on X, it said 'their presence at the club will be massively missed'. Sherine Wheeler, the chief executive of the Fire Fighters Charity, said it was 'a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifices shown by firefighters every day'. Wheeler told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the charity was 'heartbroken' by the news, and sent her condolences to the families of the three people who had died. She added: 'Firefighters go to work every day knowing that there are risks but when something like this happens it brings that reality really crashing home. 'To lose two firefighters has a far-reaching impact across the whole of the fire service community.' Chester was the proprietor of a family-run fencing and groundworks company, Chester & Sons. On Friday, a spokesperson for Bicester Motion busines park said: 'Whenever you had a question, you would 'just ask Dave', not just him but his whole family as they all cared about this place just as much as we do. 'Our whole community used to say that 'Dave always had our back'. Yesterday, he was doing just that – the epitome of his selfless spirit.' The fire was reported at 6.30pm on Thursday and spread through a former aircraft hanger at the site. Its cause it not yet known. At its height, 10 crews were tackling the blaze. Police have launched an unexplained death investigation, but are not treating it as a criminal inquiry. The business park was formerly home to RAF Bicester, an airbase that formed part of bomber command. It was decommissioned in 2004, and converted into a home for more than 50 specialist businesses that focus on classic care restoration and engineering. A golden plaque has been erected underneath the Bicester Motion sign at the entrance to the site. It reads: 'Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Bicester Motion. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of those affected by the sad loss of two firefighters and the member of the public. Love from the Bicester community.' Oxford city council has lowered the city's flag over Oxford town hall in tribute to the three victims of the fire. People are being asked to lay flowers at Bicester's Garth Park. A book of condolence will open at Garth House, in the park, on Monday.

Two hero firefighters who died alongside a 57-year-old man in an inferno in Bicester have been pictured for the first time. Brave firefighters, Jennie Logan, 30, and Martyn Sadler, 38, of Oxfordshire County Council Fire and Service, passed away in yesterday's blaze. 57-year-old David Chester, from Bicester, also perished in the horrifying fire which engulfed the former RAF base. Earlier this morning, the fire service confirmed they were 'mourning the loss' of two colleagues. It is believed to be the first time a firefighter has been died in the line of duty since January 2023 and 19 have been killed since the turn of the century. Their families are currently being supported by family liaison officers as an unexplained death probe has been launched. The incident is not being treated as a criminal investigation, as enquiries into the tragedy continue. Fire crews remain at the scene, dampening down the fire. Yesterday, witnesses said they heard multiple explosions and clouds of dense black smoke could be seen for miles following the fire at the motoring and aviation heritage site. Earlier today, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer shared his 'devastation' at the news while praising the 'astounding bravery' of firefighters. He posted on X: 'Devastating news. My thoughts are with their families and friends. The bravery of our firefighters is astounding. Hoping those in hospital make a full and swift recovery.' Eyewitnesses described seeing thick 'black' smoke in the sky from as far away as Oxford last night, as they claimed to hear multiple loud explosions. Vikas Talwar, 40, who lives in a housing estate near Bicester Motion, revealed he could see the fire from the street corner outside his house. 'There was a lot of smoke yesterday. Lots of people were gathering here on the corner but a lot of smoke was coming out.,' he said. 'There was flames on the roof, on the top of the roof, and a huge big cloud of smoke in the air. I could see it from this corner near my house.' Julie Stocker saw the flames from her bedroom window and described the deaths as 'devastating'. The 46-year-old, who lives across the road from Bicester Motion, said: 'We could hear the crackle of the fire and then obviously the various explosions and stuff. '[The smoke] was going very high. It was a mixture of white smoke and then really thick black smoke. 'We were praying that obviously no-one was injured, but sadly that's not the case. It's devastating.' The stay-at-home mother said she was concerned about her relatives living in Bicester where the 'potentially hazardous' smoke was blown. She added the site where the fire took place is usually 'very busy' and has seen workers being turned away by police this morning. Sharing a video of the blaze last night, Police and Crime Commissioner for the Thames Valley Matthew Barber described the situation as 'awful'. 'An awful situation in Bicester this evening at Bicester Heritage,' he wrote on X, adding: 'Officers from Thames Valley Police are assisting Oxfordshire Fire & Rescue Service in dealing with the significant incident.' Kieran McGurk, a product director who near the site, also reported hearing 'multiple bangs' as he saw clouds of dark smoke fill the sky. 'As we walked home and got closer to the smoke it seemed to get blacker and we heard the sirens,' he said. 'Multiple fire engines and police cars went past us and as we got to the corner at the bottom of the road ash started to fall and you could see the sheer scale of what was happening. 'Loud bangs have been constantly going off and multiple helicopters are still circling the site.' In a statement, Bicester Motion described the bravery of emergency services as 'overwhelming' as they said they were 'deeply saddened' by the three deaths. They said: 'We are deeply saddened to share the tragic news that two firefighters and a close friend of the site have lost their lives. 'There are no words at times like this, but our thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones. We pray for the two firefighters in hospital. 'The bravery shown by the emergency services teams has been overwhelming. We are grateful for all the support and especially the exceptional work by all in such unprecedented circumstances. 'The strength and kindness of the Bicester community, of which we are proud members, has truly shown itself. 'The site will remain closed over the weekend as we continue to work closely with the emergency services.' Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service have continued to advice locals to remain indoors as they continue to fight the blaze which is currently 'under control'. They said: 'The fire is still ongoing but is under control. Other support appliances remain on scene including a hydraulic platform, a water carrier, a command unit and a high-volume pumping unit. 'Advice for local residents to remain indoors and shut all windows has been lifted. Roads that were previously closed are now being opened but traffic is heavy.' A South Central Ambulance spokesperson said: 'We were called at 18.57 this evening to reports of a serious incident at Bicester Motion. We sent a robust command structure to support staff and are currently on scene as the incident is ongoing'. Molly Pipe told the BBC that the smoke could be smelt 'from perhaps half a mile away'. Meanwhile, local councillor Sam Holland added that he saw the blaze 'from a distance' adding: 'There's lots of emergency vehicles. 'Bicester Motion were meeting there earlier. I had spoken to someone as they were leaving. I hope there is nobody hurt or worse.' Oxford City Council lowered the City Flag flying over the 1930's extension of Oxford Town Hall to half-mast today to mourn the loss of the three victims. Councilor Susan Brown, leader of the city council said in a statement: 'On behalf of Oxford City Council and the City of Oxford, I want to express my condolences to the families of those firefighters and the member of the public, who have tragically lost their lives in the fire at Bicester Motion. 'This is a terrible reminder for us all that firefighters, as well as the other members of the emergency services, put themselves at risk on a daily basis, to protect us all. We owe them a deep debt of gratitude. 'We are deeply saddened and our thoughts are with the family, colleagues and friends of those we have lost in this tragic incident.' In a statement, MP for Bicester and Woodstock Calum Miller said: 'I am heartbroken to learn that three people lost their lives in the fire yesterday at Bicester Motion. 'My deep condolences go to the family and friends who are now grieving their loss. 'I want to pay tribute to the bravery of our firefighters and emergency services. It is terrible that two fire officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. 'The death of colleagues will be felt by all in the fire service family and I am holding them in my thoughts. This is a devastating moment for our community. I know it will express its support and care for all those affected.' Philip Garrigan, chief of the National Fire Chiefs Council, said: 'I am devastated by the news that two firefighters have lost their lives responding to a major incident in Bicester on Thursday evening. 'I am also deeply saddened that a member of the public has also died in the incident. 'Our firefighters are the very best of us, their courage and compassion is what make them so very special. 'My thoughts are with their families, friends and colleagues at this incredibly difficult time.' Another resident who lives near Bicester Motion said she thought the 'popping' noises were gunshots and described the deaths as 'very sad, very shocking'. The woman, who did not want to be named, said: 'When we looked out the window... obviously it was a fire. But later on, there were like proper explosions.' She said her neighbours were packing bags in case they were evacuated from their homes. The Fire Brigades Union said: 'The Fire Brigades Union is aware of a tragic incident at Bicester, in which one member of the public and two firefighters have been confirmed dead. 'Our thoughts are with their family, friends and colleagues. 'The Fire Brigades Union will provide whatever support is required in the days ahead, and in time we will investigate what happened.' Cllr Wendy Maples, Chair of the Fire Services Management Committee at the Local Government Association, said: 'I am deeply saddened to hear of the devastating loss of two firefighters and a member of the public following the fire in Bicester, Oxfordshire. 'On behalf of the Local Government Association, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of those who have tragically lost their lives. 'This is a stark reminder of the extraordinary bravery and selflessness our firefighters demonstrate every day. We also hold in our thoughts the two firefighters who were seriously injured and wish them a full and swift recovery.' Bicester resident Janine McKenna Jones, 48, described seeing 'black ash' near her home following the fatal fire. 'When I got home there was this massive black ash... sort of smoke,' she said: 'They closed the road at some point in the evening and I think it was closed until maybe 5am because you could still see the flashing lights. 'It felt very apocalyptic, if that makes sense, because you see the sky and there's this big black cloud of smoke.' She said she is still keeping windows shut at her home due to the smell of smoke. Ms Jones added: 'I just read about the deaths on the news and it's just sad really. 'And it's a shame because obviously it's local people so it's always a shame too when people lose their lives trying to help others.' Firefighters killed in the line of duty Barry Martin, 38, died in January 2023, after tackling a fire at the former Jenners department store building in Edinburgh. Stephen Hunt, 38, died on July 13, 2013 after responding to a fire at a hair salon on Oldham Street, Manchester City Centre. He took a wrong turn was found collapsed and unconscious. Billy Faust, 36, died on July 20, 2004, in the basement of a burning building in Bethnal Green, London. Joe McCloskey, 50, died on November 1, 2003, when roof of a burning building collapsed in Northern Ireland.

Inferno at former RAF base kills two firefighters in service's worst day for 15 years
The fire service suffered its deadliest day for 15 years as two firefighters died and two more were seriously injured tackling a blaze at a former RAF base. The inferno at the 444-acre automotive complex in Bicester, Oxfordshire, claimed the lives of the service's Jennie Logan, 30, and Martyn Sadler, 38. Civilian David Chester, 57, from Bicester, also died in the inferno. Flames lit up the sky above the town during the 'apocalyptic' blaze. Smoke and ash were visible for miles around and residents in the area were urged to remain indoors and close their windows. In emotional scenes, Oxfordshire Fire And Rescue Service's chief fire officer fought back tears as he confirmed the tragic losses at the scene yesterday. Pausing to compose himself, Rob MacDougall said he was 'immensely proud and grateful' for the 'unwavering bravery' shown by the emergency services. He added: 'It's with a heavy heart that today we report the loss of two of our fire officers. A member of the public has also sadly died in the incident. 'Two further firefighters sustained serious injuries and are currently in hospital.' It was the deadliest single incident for the fire service since the 2010 Shirley Towers tragedy. The latest tragedy led to an outpouring of grief, with the Prime Minister describing it as 'devastating'. 'The bravery of our firefighters is astounding. Hoping those in hospital make a full and swift recovery,' Sir Keir Starmer said on X. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch called the fire 'an absolutely horrifying incident' and said she hoped the investigation would reveal what started the deadly inferno. 'My heart goes out to the families of those people who have lost their lives... I hope that we can get to the bottom of exactly what's caused this and make sure that it doesn't happen again.' Fire stations up and down the country lowered flags to half-mast and held a two-minute silence to honour their fallen colleagues. It is not yet known what caused the ferocious blaze but Thames Valley Police has launched an unexplained death probe. However, the force said it is 'currently not a criminal investigation'. Sherine Wheeler, chief executive of the Fire Fighter's Charity, said the entire firefighting community had been left 'heartbroken'. 'It's very rare and tragic to have the loss of two firefighters alongside a member of the public and I think the impact of that is being felt deeply,' she said. Julie Stocker recalled seeing the flames and noise from her home across the road from the site. She said: 'We could hear the crackle of the fire and then obviously the various explosions and stuff... the smoke was going very high. 'We were told to close windows and doors because there was potentially asbestos in the roof.' Janine McKenna Jones, 48, described seeing 'black ash' near her home, adding: 'It felt very apocalyptic because you see the sky and there's this big black cloud of smoke.' Jake Bushen, 19, said: 'The biggest fire I have seen in my life. I saw it about 7.30am. It was going right into the horizon. It was quite scary.' 30-year-old Jennie Logan is one of the brave firefighters who died in the Bicester fire yesterday Another local, Toby Roberts, added: 'I saw smoke from all the other side of Bicester at Whitelands. There were sirens blasting everywhere... I have lived my whole life in Bicester and never seen anything like it.' Bouquets were placed outside the compound, where the fire had been brought 'under control' by Friday afternoon but a heavy police presence remained. A poignant message left from Thames Valley Police read: 'To my Red Light Family, in memory of two heroes.' Three dead in 'devastating' fire at former UK airbase
LONDON: Three people, including two firefighters, have died in a fire at a former British airbase, officials said Friday (May 16), in what Prime Minister Keir Starmer called a "devastating" incident. "Firefighters and Oxfordshire County Council colleagues are today mourning the loss of two firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty while dealing with a major incident in Bicester (southern England)," the council said in a statement. A member of the public was also killed, and two other firefighters remained hospitalised with serious injuries after the blaze erupted Thursday evening, said the statement.
