Baguiati cops slap cruelty FIR on puppy killer
1 2 Kolkata: An FIR under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act was registered at Baguiati PS after the driver of a sedan allegedly ran over and killed a puppy in front of the police station on Saturday afternoon. According to Constable Sanat Dey, who was on sentry duty at the time of the incident, the vehicle was speeding and driving recklessly when it struck the puppy around 3.30 pm just outside the sentry post of the station. The puppy reportedly died on the spot due to the impact. The constable lodged a formal complaint with the officer-in-charge, urging prompt legal action against the driver for the alleged act of cruelty. Police registered a case under Section 325 of the BNS which deals with mischief by killing or maiming an animal, and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. "The man came to Gorakshanath Temple adjoining our police station premises. The incident happened while he was leaving the temple after offering puja. He was driving in a very reckless manner, leading to the puppy's death. We have sent a notice to him and will take the strictest possible action against him," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act penalises individuals who treat animals cruelly, including causing unnecessary pain or suffering. Animal rights activists have welcomed the swift registration of the case and demanded strict punishment.

Bidhannagar cops make body cams, CCTV must for passport verification
Kolkata: Aimed at enhancing transparency and security in the passport verification process, Bidhannagar City Police has made it mandatory for all passport verifications to be conducted under camera surveillance — either through body cams during home visits or CCTV systems in police stations — from this month. The move comes at a time when Kolkata Police is investigating a fake passport racket and have arrested a retired sub-inspector for allegedly clearing applications without proper enquiry and adequate verification. Officers said the move will also help them reduce complaints from residents about officers, civic volunteers and middlemen demanding money or harassing applicants in the name of additional documentation. "Now, all passport verifications are being conducted under body camera surveillance. In the case of home verification, only representatives from the Special Branch are visiting the houses of applicants, and the entire process is being recorded. The footage is being stored until the passport is issued. At police stations, the passport verification process is being conducted strictly under CCTV monitoring with audio recording," said Tauseef Ali Azhar, ADCP SB of Bidhannagar City Police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo "Whenever we receive specific complaints, we take strict action with zero tolerance. In several instances, we initiated departmental enquiries and took disciplinary action against the officers concerned." The officer added that since May, during passport verification at home, police station, or office, an OTP-based Aadhaar verification system has been introduced through an internal app. "This has made the process more accurate and transparent. The passport verification now undergoes four-five layers of scrutiny — from the verifying officer to the local IC to the police commissioner — ensuring greater accountability," he said. The initiative gains significance in light of a racket that allegedly used forged identity documents to secure genuine Indian passports. The case came to light last Sept when the Kolkata Regional Passport Office flagged nearly 240 suspicious passports issued on the basis of faulty documents. A special probe team of Kolkata Police was formed to investigate the scam, and a charge sheet was submitted in March. Investigators found that police allegedly failed to detect forged documents during verification. On Tuesday, ED carried out raids at multiple locations across Kolkata and its surrounding districts as part of the wider investigation.

Airport issues new SOP to tackle laser interference
Kolkata: Following a spate of laser light interference incidents threatening flight safety, Kolkata airport authorities issued a fresh set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Bidhannagar City Police and surrounding municipal bodies to tackle the issue. At least 13 such incidents were reported between Jan and April, prompting urgent coordination between law enforcement and local administrative units. Under the revised protocol, Bidhannagar cops have been directed to act immediately upon any laser interference report filed by the airport operator. "In case of a laser interference reported by us to NSCBI airport police station, they should immediately inform the police station or district administration concerned to identify the source of the light and take appropriate action under relevant laws. Once the violators are identified and the laser activity is stopped, a report has to be forwarded to the airport director," said an airport official. Cops patrolling around the airport have also been advised to keep a vigil on the use of lasers in the vicinity. If there is any request for a laser show or laser illumination, the cops shall not approve it. A laser light — often originating from nearby ceremonial events, like weddings, festivals, and circuses — can momentarily blind a pilot, leaving him incapacitated until vision is restored after a while. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo This is hazardous during the landing procedure when a plane descends 1,500 ft-2,000 ft per minute. "The problem is more acute when the pilot concentrates on the runway and then the laser lights cause distraction, causing temporary blindness," said an airline official. Municipal bodies of NKDA, Bidhannagar, Dum Dum, Madhyamgram, Barasat, and Barrackpore have been tasked with increasing public awareness through regular campaigns and advertisements, emphasizing the legal and safety ramifications of unauthorised laser use. According to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)'s mandate, laser lights are banned within an 18.5-km radius of an airport. Bidhannagar cops have repeatedly stressed that laser shows are banned within its jurisdiction and a large part of Barrackpore Commissionerate's territory. "There is a complete ban. We have also asked officers in charge of all police stations in our area to hold meetings with banquet operators and remind them that their licence will be cancelled if they continue to use such lights," said an officer. The SOP also directs prominent signage banning laser usage be mandatorily displayed at puja pandals, banquet halls, hotels, and circus tents. 1 2 3 4 5 6 Kolkata: A class XII examinee taking scooter lessons from her friend on a New Town road without wearing a helmet died after she failed to negotiate a speed-breaker and fell on the ground, suffering severe head injuries on Sunday night. The accident happened near the Majherhat shrine in the Rekjuani area in New Town around 10 pm when there were very few vehicles plying on the road. Victim Pooja Saha (18) was a resident of Salua on Rajarhat Main Road, located near the place of accident. CCTV footage showed Saha riding the scooter with unstable hands as her friend, Subhankar Bhowmik, a resident of Narayanpur, was seen guiding her from the pillion seat. Bhowmik was seen wearing a helmet. "It looked like the girl suddenly turned the accelerator in full throttle as she lost control of the two-wheeler, and it began moving at a high speed before it hit the speed breaker," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. As the accident happened, Saha was flung off the scooter, and her head rammed against the concrete. Bhowmik also fell down, but since he had the helmet strapped on, he escaped with minor injuries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Locals rushed Saha to Rekjuani Rural Health Center with injuries on her head, neck, chest, and abdomen. Doctors declared her dead on arrival at the hospital. Bhowmik was treated for minor injuries. Family members said Saha recently passed higher secondary examination with good scores and was awaiting college admission. "She purchased a new bag and clothes in anticipation, which now remain untouched in her closet. She wanted to pursue graduation in English. She had so many dreams. We were all so proud of her," said a grieving relative. "This loss is unbearable." Airport PS has launched an unnatural death probe. The damaged scooter has been seized and Saha's body sent for post-mortem. "We have been pleading with riders to always wear helmets. If the woman wore the helmet, she could still live," said the officer. "We also urge citizens, especially young and inexperienced riders, to be cautious while operating two-wheelers and avoid late-night rides without supervision or proper training. "
