Disney+, Hulu Set July Premiere for Korean Treasure-Hunt Drama ‘Low Life'

Ryu Seung-ryong, the veteran Korean star whose lead performance in Disney+'s Moving helped make it the platform's most-watched Asian original to date, returns to the streamer next month in Low Life, a colorful period crime drama set against the backdrop of 1970s South Korea's murky underworld. The 11-part series will premiere July 16 with a three-episode debut, followed by weekly releases leading up to a two-part finale on August 13. Low Life will launch internationally on Disney+ and domestically on Hulu as a Hulu Original. Written and directed by Kang Yun-seong, the screenwriter behind Disney+'s Big Bet and director of Korean blockbuster The Outlaws, Low Life follows a ragtag pair of small-time schemers — an uncle and nephew— who stumble across a tantalizing rumor: a sunken treasure ship laden with riches has been found just off the Korean coast. With dreams of finally striking it rich, the duo plunges headfirst into a cutthroat race against rival fortune-seekers, opportunists and underworld figures. The cast also includes Im Soo-jung (Melancholia, Single in Seoul) as Yang Jungsook, the matriarch of Hongbaek Industries, whose own ambitions complicate the treasure hunt. Low Life marks the latest addition to Disney+'s expanding slate of high-end Korean originals, following buzzy titles like Hyper Knife and Nine Puzzles, the latter of which is the platform's most-watched Korean drama of 2025. Later this year, Disney+ will debut other star-driven Korean projects, including Tempest, featuring Gianna Jun, Gang Dongwon and John Cho, and Made in Korea, headlined by Hyun Bin and Jung Woosung. The series reflects Disney's ongoing strategy to deepen its Asia-Pacific originals catalog with prestige Korean dramas that blend genre hooks with local period detail and star power. With Low Life, the streamer appears to be leaning into retro noir stylings and anti-hero dynamics, aiming to replicate the international appeal of Big Bet and Narco-Saints. Son Suk Ku announces hiatus after consecutive hits with Nine Puzzles and Heavenly Ever After, here's what he'll do next

Son Suk Ku, the popular actor who's impressed viewers with his performances across film and drama, is preparing to take a step back from acting. In a recent interview with Sports Seoul, the actor revealed that he plans to take a prolonged break after completing his current schedule. The announcement comes after a relentless few years that saw Son Suk Ku take on back-to-back roles in hit projects. It earned him widespread praise and solidified his place as one of the most dependable and talented actors in Korean entertainment. From blockbusters to critical darlings Few actors in recent memory have maintained the pace and consistency that Son Suk Ku has demonstrated in recent years. His filmography in just the past few years includes The Outlaws 2 (2022) and D.P. (2021–2023). He also drew significant attention in My Liberation Notes (2022). This was followed by Big Bet (2022–2023), A Killer Paradox (2024), Heavenly Ever After (2025) and most recently, the Disney+ thriller Nine Puzzles (2025). Yet despite this acclaim, the actor has decided it's time to take a breather. Time to do things differently In the interview, Son Suk Ku shared that he is still working on projects already in progress. However, he's looking forward to stepping away from the constant grind of filming. He said, 'I'm still working right now, but once I finish what I've already committed to, I plan to take quite a long break," The actor explained that he had spent the last few years chasing opportunity after opportunity, always eager to be involved in new productions. However, that relentless pace has prompted him to reconsider his creative direction. 'In the past, I was focused on appearing in as many works as possible,' he reflected. 'I've learned a lot through that experience, but now I feel it's time to focus on more meaningful expressions.' A creative pause with new plans in mind Son Suk Ku's upcoming break doesn't mean complete silence. In fact, he's planning to use the time to engage with creative challenges beyond acting, most notably, screenwriting. He shared that constantly working on multiple projects has been incredibly demanding, and 'takes a tremendous amount of time and energy.' He rethink his approach to acting, and seek new creative directions. The actor revealed that he is currently working on a screenplay. 'Whether people liked my projects or not, if they watched, they're my number one fans,' he said, showing appreciation for the public's support. 'I do have dreams and plans during this break, mainly to take on new challenges I haven't explored before.'

U's fan set to launch exciting new prediction app this summer

AN Oxford United supporter is set to launch a new football prediction app ahead of next season. Founded by Kieran Whelan, from Brize Norton, and two of his friends, TIPPL Sports will see users select six results from the 20 hardest games to predict from the Premier League down to Sky Bet League Two. The chaotic points system includes base points for correct results, bonuses for winning the 'Big Bet' and penalties for players who have poor weeks. Goal difference also contributes to a player's weekly score, ensuring no one is ever out of the title race. READ ALSO: Simon Eastwood announces United contract extension Having become bored of current apps on the market focusing on the top flight, Whelan used Microsoft Excel to create an app in a bid to engage more EFL fans. 'I decided to build a simple Excel, no budgets or score picking or anything like that, I would just choose the five hardest matches to predict from each of the top four leagues, and we would all choose six results,' Whelan explained. 'It then grew and grew, a few of our other friends joined, then friends of friends, and eventually after a couple of years I had two divisions running, relegation and promotion, and around 100 people, with more wanting to join the season after. 'I wanted to create something chaotically fun. Throughout the few years on Excel, we had a player gain as much as 36 points in one week and drop as many as minus 21. 'I think so far we've only had one season out of four where it's been won by more than 10 points, and one where the leader was first all season, and lost only on correct predictions on the final game, essentially like losing the title on goal difference. 'We even have lower league specials during international breaks where the National League and National League North and South are involved. We wanted to essentially flip the script and show that the EFL community is something that shouldn't be ignored.' He said: 'I would definitely love to see as many Oxford fans as possible getting involved, joining a fans' league, and enjoying the app. There are plans for a team's league too, so the more Oxford fans representing the club and gaining points the better.' With approximately 100 people and two divisions running in the previous couple of years, Whelan prepares for the launch of TIPPL Sports on July 18. He hopes to see the app progress into a hub for EFL fans in the future, before one day looking to take the fun overseas. For more information about TIPPL Sports, please visit:

MBC's decision to broadcast Disney+'s 'Big Bet' met with internal dissent

After airing 'Moving' in January, TV network increasingly looks to fill slots with content from streaming services MBC, one of South Korea's leading television networks, is facing mounting backlash from its own producers following the decision to broadcast Disney+ Korea's hit original series "Big Bet," beginning in July. The series, which stars veteran actors Choi Min-sik and Son Suk-ku, originally ran on Disney+ for two seasons between 2022 and 2023. MBC has confirmed that "Big Bet" season 1 will air Fridays and Saturdays at 10 p.m. throughout July, while season 2 will move to a regular Sunday night slot starting in August. The series will retain its original 19+ rating, though MBC said some edits would be needed to meet broadcast review standards. MBC said the broadcast of "Big Bet" reflects its ongoing effort to offer strategic curation of carefully selected, proven programs, adding that it aimed to broaden viewers' content choices. However, the move has triggered significant internal dissent. A total of 53 producers and production staff from MBC's drama division recently issued a joint statement condemning the decision. Via the statement, the producers criticized the management's push to delay its upcoming series — "Judge Lee Han-young" — originally slated for the same time slot as "Big Bet." 'The seriousness of the matter is heightened by the fact that the originally planned drama production was postponed to next year, in order to artificially create a budget surplus for this year,' the statement said. As a result of MBC's decision to air "Big Bet," "Judge Lee Han-young," an adaptation of a popular Naver webtoon, has been pushed back to early 2026. The drama, which features a cast including Ji Sung, Won Jin-ah and Park Hee-soon, follows a judge who, after his unjust demise, returns to the past to deliver righteous judgments. The statement accused MBC of bypassing producers in making the programming decision, and warned of a potential fallout with the series' cast. "Due to the management's decision to schedule 'Big Bet,' 'Judge Lee Han-young' now requires renegotiation with its lead actors,' it read. The producers are demanding a full reconsideration of the "Big Bet" rollout, the restoration of decision-making authority to drama teams, and reforms to what they call profit-centered management practices. Meanwhile, this is not the first time MBC has broadcast content from streaming services to fill its drama slots. In January, the network aired the Disney+ blockbuster "Moving," broadcasting two episodes every Sunday. The strategy reflects an emerging trend in Korean broadcasting, where legacy networks are increasingly looking to partner with streaming platforms to mitigate soaring content production costs and appeal to broader demographics. The shift comes amid growing financial strain across Korea's terrestrial broadcasters. KBS has reported a cumulative net loss of 14.1 billion won ($10,228,768) over the past three years, while SBS posted an operating loss of 19.2 billion won in 2024 -- its first deficit since 2016 -- and MBC's operating profit plunged from 56.6 billion won in 2022 to 6.6 billion won last year.

Korean Crime Thriller "Nine Puzzles" in Development

Yara Sameh Disney+ is continuing its strong direction into Korean content with 'Nine Puzzles,' a cerebral crime thriller starring Kim Dami ('Itaewon Class') and Son Sukku ('Big Bet'). The 11-episode series follows Yoon Ena, a high school student who discovers her uncle's murdered body next to a single puzzle piece. Initially, the prime suspect, Ena reemerges a decade later as a criminal profiler only to find herself entangled in a new series of murders — each victim connected by puzzle pieces similar to the one from her uncle's crime scene. The show brings together notable Korean talent beyond its leads, with Kim Sungkyun ('Moving,' 'The Fiery Priest') as Police Captain Yang Jungho and Hyun Bongsik ('When Life Gives You Tangerines,' 'Gangnam B-Side') as Junior Detective Choi San. 'Narco Saints' director Yoon Jongbin helms the project from a script by Lee Eunmi ('Tunnel,' 'Navillera'). The first six episodes will drop on May 21 on Disney+ internationally. 'Nine Puzzles' adds to Disney+'s growing slate of Korean originals that has already seen success in 2025 with the investigative thriller 'Unmasked' and medical drama 'Hyper Knife,' the latter becoming the platform's most-viewed Korean premiere globally this year. Disney+ has continued investment in Korean content with upcoming 2025 releases including the treasure-hunting drama 'Low Life' starring Ryu Seungryong and the international conspiracy series 'Tempest' featuring Jun Gianna, Gang Dongwon, John Cho, and Michael Gaston.
