Adam Sandler's major reinvention from cheeky chap to Hollywood's biggest earner

There is no denying that Adam Sandler has had one of the biggest reinventions in Hollywood, transforming his career from a few small roles into the undisputed king of comedy. The 58-year-old is undoubtedly one of busiest stars around, having made his screen debut in the 80s, and is still working tirelessly today. On Friday, he is set to bring a beloved character back to our screens once again in the Happy Gilmore 2 sequel, leading the star-studded cast alongside Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller, with appearances from Travis Kelce and Bad Bunny. But how did the Brooklyn-born actor, who made us all laugh in Just Go With It, Big Daddy and Grown Ups, turn laughter into a multi-million-dollar deal with Netflix? Adam began his career in stand-up before making the transition over to the small screen, with his TV debut as Smitty in a handful of episodes on the Cosby show in 1987. From there, he landed a string of film roles in movies including Going Overboard and Coneheads, before becoming a regular on Saturday Night Live between 1990 – 1995. Over the last few years, he has juggled his regular comedies in with some more serious roles, including Uncut Gems, Hustle and Spaceman, and is set to star opposite Laura Dern and George Clooney in Jay Kelly very soon. In 2014, his Happy Madison company took a huge step and signed a massive deal with Netflix, worth $250million, to produce films for the streaming service, including The Ridiculous 6, The Do-Over and his Murder Mystery movies. He also headlined two Netflix stand-up specials, 100% Fresh and I Love You. The lucrative partnership with the streaming services has been extended twice so far and, according to the Telegraph, in 2020, Netflix bosses claimed that subscribers had spent more than two billion hours watching his films. This has all helped to cement his status as one of the biggest stars of our time. Forbes reports that he was the 9th highest paid actor for 2024 – after topping the annual list the previous year – and earned a whopping $26m. Considering he has two huge projects coming out this year and a reported net worth of around $440m, we predict more appearances in the Forbes list in his future… While Adam has remained booked and busy in the decades since his career began, he has also gone above and beyond to help out his peers in the industry, giving pals roles and cameos in whatever project he was working on. In fact, members of his circle have become his most regular co-stars, with Rob Schneider, Steve Buscemi and David Spade appearing in countless Adam Sandler creations alongside his wife, Jackie, and their daughters, Sadie and Sunny. Hollywood heavyweight Al Pacino previously shared that the Funny People superstar gave him a role in 2011's Jack and Jill at a point when he was struggling for money – due to a corrupt accountant and years of overspending. 'I was broke. I had $50 million, and then I had nothing,' he wrote in his 2024 memoir, Sonny Boy, via IndieWire. 'In this business, when you make $10m for a film, it's not $10m. Because after the lawyers, and the agents, and the publicist, and the government, it's not $10m, it's $4.5m in your pocket. 'But you're living above that because you're high on the hog. And that's how you lose it. It's very strange, the way it happens. The more money you make, the less you have. 'The kind of money I was spending and where it was going was just a crazy montage of loss. […] And I thought, It's simple. It's clear. I just know this. Time stopped. I am f**ked.' 'Jack and Jill was the first film I made after I lost my money. To be honest, I did it because I didn't have anything else,' he recalled. 'Adam Sandler wanted me, and they paid me a lot for it. So I went out and did it, and it helped. 'I love Adam, he was wonderful to work with and has become a dear friend. He also just happens to be a great actor and a hell of a guy.' There is no denying that Adam has been a major part of the most iconic comedies in recent years, with many of his early 00s films still being quoted today – but he hasn't always been taken seriously by critics. In fact, while he pocketed millions of dollars in his deal with Netflix, he also has nine Razzies to his name and many more nominations. Discussing the harsh criticism he has received throughout his career and whether that 'stings', he told the AARP: 'Sometimes. Mostly because I invite all these amazing people I care about to make movies with me, and I wish they didn't have to read s**t about whatever we've made. 'But I don't get too shook up. I always remember something my father said. He was a tough b*****d. He went through ups and downs in his life, like not having work for a year or two and not telling us. 'I recall one time that something didn't go right for me. I bombed onstage or didn't get an audition. I was upset and probably embarrassed. And he said, 'Adam, you can't always be happy. People aren't always going to like you. You're going to fail.' I said, 'But I just want to be happy, man. I don't want all that other crap.' More Trending 'He said, 'You won't actually know you're happy if you don't feel that other stuff.' Touching on what keeps him going amid negative reactions, he added: 'I like giving myself over to a new challenge. Sometimes I feel like I'm tapped out with new thoughts, and then all of a sudden, something new comes up and I go, 'Okay, how can I make this happen?' 'It was cool as hell pushing myself in new ways like I did on Uncut Gems. Running around the Diamond District in New York, the intensity of that amazing character, or in Hustle, being around the greatest NBA players and not worrying about laughs as much as what each character is going through and pulling for. But I do love comedy more than anything.' Happy Gilmore 2 is released on Netflix on Friday. Got a story? New trendy flavour of iconic Fox's chocolate biscuit is hitting Tesco shelves

M&S has also recently brought back its Dubai-style snack CRUNCH TIME New trendy flavour of iconic Fox's chocolate biscuit is hitting Tesco shelves Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SWEET-TOOTHED shoppers are flocking to get their hands on a new biscuit inspired by a huge 2025 flavour craze. Fox's has launched its own twist on the popular Dubai-style chocolate. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Fox's have launched their Dubai-style chocolate biscuits And to make things even sweeter, they are being sold in Tesco for just £2.65 for Clubcard customers. If you don't have a Clubcard, the limited edition biccies are £3 per pack. Fox's is the first mainstream confectionery brand to marry the luxurious pistachio filling with a biscuit. Originating from the UAE's luxury capital, Dubai-style chocolate blends Middle Eastern heritage with lavish presentation, often featuring ingredients like saffron, rose, pistachio, cardamom, camel milk, and even edible gold leaf. The craze, which started gaining popularity in 2010, has now found its way to the UK through luxury retailers, travel influencers, and foodies keen to explore global flavours. Chocolatiers in London, Manchester, and beyond have since begun crafting their own takes on Dubai-style confections, often marketing them as premium gifts or special-occasion treats. One of the most common fillings is knafeh, which is made from a crispy shredded filo pastry. Pistachio cream is also spread through the sweet chocolate, adding a nutty flavour to cut through the sweetness. Fox's biscuits make the flavour accessible for all budgets, and they are perfect with a cup of tea. Earlier this year, M&S shoppers were delighted when the retailer decided to bring back their take on the treat. Just like 'Dubai chocolate', M&S' chocolate bar - the Big Daddy - features a milk chocolate shell filled with a scrumptious green pistachio filling. The supermarket took to Instagram to share: 'Our VIRAL Big Daddy Pistachio is BACK in stock and has your name written all over it! 'If you missed out the first time, we'll forgive you, but don't let yourself miss out again on this heavenly bar of signature rich, creamy milk chocolate layered with gooey sweet and salty caramel, filled with a chunky pistachio layer with roasted pistachios, velvety pistachio creme and a light, biscuit crumb. 'Snack responsibly… or don't, we're not judging.' The Big Daddy Pistachio is actually an update on Marks and Spencer's insanely popular Big Daddy bar that had shoppers in a frenzy in 2024. This comes after a Dubai-style product was urgently recalled following a dangerous health risk. Shoppers were warned not to eat the popular sweet treat. The Food Standards Agency warned that the Neosis Schokolade Love of Dubai chocolate contains peanuts. But this is not mentioned on the label, making it a possible health risk to anyone with an allergy to the nut. Shops selling the chocolate are warned to "immediately stop sales and to undertake product withdrawals". The FSA said: "The product presents a serious risk to anyone with an allergy to peanuts." Businesses have been supplied these products by a company called Black Sea Trading Ltd, "who have so far been uncontactable". The FSA added: "Don't buy this product, and if you have bought it, don't eat it, especially if you have a peanut allergy. "Dispose of the product at home and get in touch with your local Trading Standards in Great Britain or Environmental Health Officers in Northern Ireland, to let them know where you purchased it."

Canadian visits 'UK's fattest town' in Wales and is stunned when he enters McDonald's

Canadian visits 'UK's fattest town' in Wales and is stunned when he enters McDonald's A Welsh town has unfortunately become known as the 'UK's fattest town' with fatty food one cause of the obesity crisis, but one Canadian was impressed by the kindness of locals on his visit Will Tennyson is from Toronto and he recently visited Ebbw Vale A popular Canadian fitness influencer travelled to a town in Wales that was called 'UK's fattest town' and delivered a surprise verdict. Ebbw Vale in south Wales earned the unwanted title because of the number of people who have health problems like obesity and the town's high number of takeaways where 73% of restaurants are fast food outlets. YouTuber Will Tennyson, who is from Toronto, travelled all the way to the former steel town in the south Wales Valleys to investigate why people were struggling with their health. And what he found behind the ominous statistics disturbed him. ‌ Checking into his hotel, he said the receptionist remarked: 'We are known as the fattest town in Britain. There's not an awful lot to be honest with you. There isn't a great deal around here other than kebab shops and vape shops.' And after reaching his room, he was greeted by fast food menus, and he said the number of options was 'absolutely insane'. ‌ However, after a night's rest, he explored the town, and said the smell of food struck him right away. He added: 'They were not kidding about the kebab houses, they are actually everywhere. We probably passed 15 on the way here.' He had breakfast in Frenchie's cafe and ordered the 'Big Daddy' that consisted of four sausages, two black puddings, beans, bacon, three hashbrowns, four eggs, tomatoes and six slices of bread. He spent 24 hours in the town in South Wales Article continues below Will said that people in Ebbw Vale were incredibly warm and speaking to a cafe worker about whether it was hard to be healthy here, she replied: 'The wages are not very good. The prices of everything have gone up.' He added: 'Everybody here is so nice, like this entire town. It is probably because they are well fed. Like you don't want to deal with angry people, right?" Adding that "everyone is happy" he then delivered his four-word verdict that it is a "great place to be". ‌ But while chatting to other residents that day, the pressure from the economy became a theme, with one woman, who lost over nine stone in the last 12 months, telling him: "Obesity is normalised and everybody here is obese. It is a lack of education and social normality and the environment you are living in.' Another young man said he had not been to the gym in two years because he keeps getting rejected for jobs because of his lack of experience. He said money was therefore tight and cheap meals were the most alluring option he had. He spent the day filling up on cheap fatty foods ‌ Summarising his findings, Will told the camera: 'A lot of people here don't have jobs. They are living off the state. The cheap food is absolutely crucial for them to survive. They can't afford the healthier foods which is why there is only one green grocer in the entire town.' With that in mind, Will visited the Fresh N Fruity green grocer, and noted that it was extremely quiet. He picked up a packet containing six duck eggs priced at £3.50, saying the nearby Greggs was selling a breakfast roll and hot drink for just £2.95. Reflecting, he said it was 'hard to argue with the convenience' and said a butternut squash was more expensive than an entire pizza that was displayed on a poster for £1.50 on a window of a shop nearby. ‌ In that shop, Heron Foods, a store worker told Will the fruit and veg aisle was the least popular and that it was 'really expensive' to eat healthy. This has led to unwelcome headlines in recent years including some addresses getting takeaways delivered three times a day and people's driveways being blocked by people queuing for the McDonald's. He praised locals for their kindness during his trip And the latter inspired Will to visit the local Maccies where customers can wait up to 30 minutes to get served. After entering, he said: 'The place is absolutely packed. I was walking the town and I was like, 'Where is everybody?' They are all here. This must be the unofficial town hall. Just a constant stream of cars and inside it is ridiculous.' ‌ Later in the day Will entered a pizza shop where on Thursdays it is buy one get one free. While tucking into his fast food, he noted a shop across the road selling seriously cheap booze. He observed: 'You are literally set up for failure everywhere you go here. Think about a recovering alcoholic working at a brewery. That is what it would be like. If you are trying to lose weight and you are surrounded… I can't imagine how hard it would be.' Will, who lost a lot of weight in his younger years, said he was not sure whether it would have been possible living in Ebbw Vale. He added: 'It is really scary to think about and I feel really bad for people that are here. It is all they know and you only know what you know and they are brought up on the same habits as their parents and it is a generational trickle down effect.' ‌ Despite acknowledging that people were unable to afford a gym because of low income, he did say that he did not once see anyone cycling or running on the street during his visit. However, his overall feeling was one of sympathy, and concluding his vlog, he said: '24 hours in the UK's most obese town was eye-opening. People here are kind of trapped. 'They have limited choices to be healthy and breaking the norm is extremely difficult and when financial troubles are in the mix, it isn't about health, it is purely about survival and putting food on the table.'
