USA TODAY Sports Network 2025 preseason All-Big Ten college football team, awards
INDIANAPOLIS — Jeremiah Smith sealed Ohio State's national championship win over Notre Dame by hauling in a deep fade. The quarterback will change for the Buckeyes but Smith is an immediate threat as one of college football's best playmakers. He was picked by a select group of USA TODAY Sports Network writers to win preseason Big Ten Player of the Year. He was one of five unanimous selections. Others included: Iowa center Logan Jones, Penn State offensive guard Olaivavega Ioane, Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles and Michigan kicker Dominic Zvada. Reporters representing the bicoastal conference named their top players by position, specialists, picked preseason awards and ranked order of finish. Thirteen of the 18 teams had a player receiving a vote. Programs not represented included Wisconsin, Nebraska, Rutgers, Maryland and Purdue, which was the consensus last-place team in predicted order of finish. And, as the transfer portal era would have it, two former Boilermakers — safety Dillon Thieneman and tight end Max Klare — made the All-Big Ten team. Four different coaches were on ballots, but it was Penn State's James Franklin who was selected Big Ten Coach of the Year. His Nittany Lions were the writers' pick to win the Big Ten, a breakthrough occurrence since the 2016 title, their lone one during the division era. Yet they could join their former division rivals, Ohio State and Michigan, in leading the Big Ten to a third straight national championship. As Big Ten football media days kicks off in Las Vegas on Tuesday, here are the picks (italicized denotes unanimous selection). Quarterback: Drew Allar, Penn State Running back (2): Jonah Coleman, Washington; Nicholas Singleton, Penn State Wide receiver (2): Elijah Sarratt, Indiana; Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State Tight end: Max Klare, Ohio State Offensive tackle (2): Gennings Dunker, Iowa; Isaiah World, Oregon Offensive guard (2): Olaivavega Ioane, Penn State; Emmanuel Pregnon, Oregon Offensive center: Logan Jones, Iowa Defensive line (4): Zane Durant, Penn State; Gabe Jacas, Illinois; Mikail Kamara, Indiana; Matayo Uiagalelei, Oregon Linebacker (3): Bryce Boettcher, Oregon; Aiden Fisher, Indiana; Sonny Styles, Ohio State Defensive backs (4): Caleb Downs, Ohio State; D'Angelo Ponds, Indiana; Dillon Thieneman, Oregon; (tie) Koi Perich, Minnesota and Xavier Scott, Illinois Kicker: Dominic Zvada, Michigan Punter: Ryan Eckley, Michigan State All-purpose: Kaden Wetjen, Iowa Player of the year: Jeremiah Smith, wide receiver, Ohio State Coach of the year: James Franklin, Penn State Newcomer of the year: Makhi Hughes, running back, Oregon

Oregon baseball's Mark Wasikowski named Big Ten Coach of the Year
Oregon baseball's Mark Wasikowski named Big Ten Coach of the Year Oregon baseball coach Mark Wasikowski was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches Tuesday morning after the Ducks captured the conference regular season crown. The Ducks went 22-8 in conference play and 41-13 overall as they will be the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten tournament this week in Omaha. This is the first time Wasikowski has been named Coach of the Year during his six seasons at Oregon. He makes it a clean sweep on the diamond as Oregon's softball coach, Melyssa Lombardi, was also given the award last week. It's quite the achievement for the Ducks in just their first season in the Big Ten. Besides Wasikowski being honored, five Oregon players were named to the conference First Team and four others were named to the Third Team. Friday night ace Grayson Grinsell, closer Seth Maddox, first baseman Jacob Walsh, outfielder Mason Neville and second baseman Ryan Cooney were the Ducks' First-Teamers. Headlining the Third Team is designated hitter Dominic Hellman, shortstop Maddox Molony, outfielder Anson Aroz, and starting pitcher Jason Reitz. Catcher Burke-Lee Mabeus was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team as well. Grinsell led the Ducks on the mound, going 9-2 with a 2.33 earned run average. Seth Maddox ended the regular season with a 2.60 ERA and seven saves. On the offensive side, Neville was the guy for the Ducks with his NCAA-leading and program single-season mark of 26 home runs and 56 runs batted in. Walsh, the program overall leader in round-trippers with 59 total, also dramatically improved his batting average to .344 and 59 RBI. Cooney, who hit eighth in the order for much of the season, managed to hit .341 and drive in 47 runs. The Ducks will attempt to make it a double championship season as they open the conference tournament on Thursday with Michigan State. The Spartans starting lefty, Joseph Dzierwa, was the Pitcher of the Year. UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky won Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

Ohio State coach Kevin McGuff facing DUI charge
Ohio State women's basketball coach Kevin McGuff is facing a drunken-driving charge after police said they found him parked in his front yard last week in Dublin, Ohio. On Tuesday, authorities confirmed McGuff's arrest on May 6 for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. The incident report released Tuesday said Dublin officers located McGuff, 55, inside a Toyota SUV that was partially parked on his lawn. Another driver had called police to report a vehicle driving recklessly and striking several curbs, officials said. Responding officers performed several field sobriety tests, including asking McGuff to say the alphabet from D to R. "Kevin could only say 'D' and could not recite any other letters," read the police report obtained by the Columbus Dispatch. McGuff refused a breathalyzer test and was taken into custody and charged with OVI, a first-degree misdemeanor. He was released about an hour later into his wife's custody. Ohio State's athletic department said it was aware of the arrest and is "monitoring the situation closely." "This is an ongoing, personal legal matter, and the department will share additional information at the appropriate time," a school spokesperson said. McGuff has a 276-113 record since taking over at Ohio State in 2013. The Buckeyes have reached the NCAA Tournament eight times under his leadership, including 2024-25 when they finished with a 26-7 record. He was the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2023-24. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2023 - All Rights Reserved

The salary pool is subject to potential annual increases based upon conference/national trends and athletics department resources. It is worth noting that Iowa agreed to pay the buyout McCollum owed for leaving Drake to take the job with the Hawkeyes. The term sheet acquired by the Register did not specify the buyout amount but stated that Iowa also agreed to pay any taxes that McCollum may owe on the buyout amount. However, if McCollum were to leave the program on or before April 30, 2026, he would be required to reimburse Iowa for the buyout covered from leaving Drake. That would be an additional cost on top of the buyout that he would have to pay Iowa. Northwestern coach Chris Collins signs multiyear extension
April 4 - Northwestern basketball coach Chris Collins signed a multiyear extension to remain with the school. Athletic director Mark Jackson announced the agreement on Friday but didn't reveal any terms. CBS Sports said his new salary will put him among the highest-paid coaches in the Big Ten. Michigan State's Tom Izzo earned $6.2 million and UCLA's Mick Cronin $6.1 million in the 2024-25 season, according to the USA Today's coaches salary database. Collins' salary was listed at just shy of $3.3 million. Collins, 50, just completed his 12th season with the Wildcats. He has led the school to three NCAA Tournaments, including back-to-back appearances in 2023 and 2024. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year in the 2022-23 season. "Northwestern is my family's home. I am really proud of what we have built over the last 12 years with our basketball program and couldn't be more excited to continue the journey together," said Collins, who has a 194-190 record (.505) with the program. His win total is second in school history behind Dutch Lonborg, who was 236-203 from 1928-50. The Wildcats finished the 2024-25 season at 17-16 (7-13 Big Ten), despite playing without two of their top three scorers, guards Brooks Barnhizer (17.1 points per game) and Jalen Leach (14.3), for a combined 26 games due to injuries.
