Auto strike against new traffic rules evokes mixed response

Patna: Strike of auto and e-rickshaw, called by several unions, evoked mixed response in the state capital on Tuesday. Several unions, including Bihar State Auto Chalak Sangh, Auto and e-rickshaw Sanyukt Sangharsh Morcha, Patna Zila e-rickshaw Chalak Sangh and Auto Men's Union had called the strike against new traffic rules. The union leaders staged a protest near the Patna Junction. The protesting leaders demanded immediate resolution of problems arising from the new traffic arrangements for vehicles operating from Patna Junction or coming towards the muti-modal hub. Their demands included reduction in fine amount of Rs 20,000, distribution of licence to e-rickshaw and auto drivers through camps and halt of collection of money in the name of parking at the railway stations, among others. Rajkumar Jha, general secretary of the federation, said: "With the construction of a multi-modal hub and implementation of the new traffic rules at the Patna Junction, auto drivers face lots of challenges. Autos have also stopped plying on some routes due to the new traffic rules." He demanded complete withdrawal of the Road Transport and Safety Bill, 2019 and implementation of Mukhyamantri Chalak Kalyan Yojana. Additionally, he called upon the govt to implement a social security scheme for all drivers. Meanwhile, auto unions including Pragatisheel Auto Chalak Union, Patna; Jan Suraj Auto and e-rickshaw Auto Chalak Sangh and others, said they did not join the strike.
