Mohanlal was the impetus behind 'Drishyam 3', says Jeethu Joseph
Director Jeethu Joseph, who delivered the blockbusters Drishyam and Drishyam 2, catapulting its protagonist Georgekutty into India's popular culture, revealed that the draft of the third instalment of the series, Drishyam 3, is ready.
And it was actor Mohanlal — whose steely portrayal of a father ready to shield his family from adversaries won laurels — who prompted him to write Drishyam 3.
Joseph, while recently speaking at the inaugural of a film and drama club at Nirmala College in Muvattupuzha in Kerala, said that he was under immense pressure while writing the draft. 'When I finished (writing), I felt relief,' he said in a video of the event.
The director is juggling multiple projects, including the shoots for the Malayalam thrillers Mirage, which stars Asif Ali and Aparna Balamurali in the lead; and Valathu Vashathe Kallan, with Biju Menon and Joju George. Joseph revealed that his day would begin early by around 3.30 AM, as he would write for Drishyam 3 in between. 'It was a struggle; mentally and physically I was tired,' he said. 'But now it is a great feeling.'
In an interview with Mathrubhumi, Joseph said that the impetus for the third instalment came from Mohanlal, soon after Drishyam 2 (2021). 'Though I was not sure about what to say at that time, I told him that if we ever went for another sequel, I wish for the climax to be crafted in a particular way. I shared my thoughts with him,' Joseph was quoted as saying by the publication. "At that time I had said that if Georgekutty returns once again, the climax of the movie will be in a particular way."
' Lalettan (or how Mohanlal is popularly referred to in Kerala) liked it and asked me to have a try... and if it comes right, let's move ahead with the story,' Joseph was quoted as saying by Mathrubhumi. "It was the climax of Drishyam 3 that first came to my mind."
Drishyam 3 will begin filming in September and is being produced by Aashirvaad Cinemas, a banner that has been traditionally associated with movies involving Mohanlal. The first two films of the franchise received wide critical acclaim and became massive hits at the box office, spawning massive interest and remakes in multiple Indian languages.
Apart from Drishyam 3, Mirage and Valathu Vashathe Kallan, Joseph told Mathrubhumi he has a legal drama with Fahadh Faasil lined up for 2025.
