«Too intense to ignore» : Moroccan winger Ould-Chikh opens up about racism in Dutch football
Moroccan winger Bilal Ould-Chikh, who plays for FC Volendam, has opened up about the racism he continues to face from the stands—despite his decisive performances on the pitch. In an interview with cited by Voetbalprimeur, the former Morocco U20 international described the shocking abuse he's endured this season. During an away match against FC Den Bosch, he was reportedly called a «cancerous Muslim». The 27-year-old also spoke of a «feeling of structural exclusion» tied to his origins. For these reasons, he said he is seriously considering relocating to Morocco after his playing career ends. Ould-Chikh recently shone for Volendam in the Eredivisie, playing on Monday night. But in the interview, he emphasized that «it is more important to talk about discrimination», pointing to the repeated incidents that have weighed heavily on him as a player. Just last month, he reported racist behavior from some of his own supporters. While the club issued a statement at the time—saying neither the player nor the team would revisit the matter—Ould-Chikh now insists the experiences are «too intense» to be ignored. «I can't explain why I am approached more aggressively than others, except because of my origin», he said. «I remained polite during the interview. But people need to realize how much I've been a victim of discrimination and racism in recent years». According to him, these incidents «happen everywhere—at ADO Den Haag, at FC Den Bosch…». He recalled scoring the winning goal last season in Emmen, a moment that was marred by a racist remark. «After that, an older man came up to me and said: 'Nice goal, but it's a shame someone like you scored it'».
