'Underrated' horror movie hailed by fans finally arrives on Amazon Prime
A 'must see' horror movie has finally arrived on Amazon Prime Video, ready for us all to be terrified again. Nosferatu hit the big screen in 2024, with Bill Skarsgård leading a star-studded cast alongside Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Director Robert Eggers put his own stamp on the Dracula-inspired Gothic tale, following a young woman tortured by a psychic connection to an evil vampire. The film made a huge splash when it was released just a few months ago, and was branded 'chilling', 'hauntingly beautiful' and 'downright evil' by cinemagoers. It raked more than $181million at the global box office, earning four Oscar nominations for best cinematography, best costume design, best production design and best hair and makeup styling. The scare-fest will is now available to stream on Amazon Prime, just in case fans missed it in cinemas, or want another excuse to hide behind their sofa cushions. Jonathan M praised: 'The new Nosferatu was fantastic – beautifully dark atmosphere and amazing performances all around. It stayed true to the spirit of the classic while adding some fresh twists that kept things interesting. 'A couple of scenes felt slightly long, but overall, it's one of the best horror films I've seen lately.' Tyler F said: 'A horror absolute must see. You cannot unsee this movie. It's one of those ones that sticks with you.' 'The best Dracula-related film ever made. Proper Gothic treatment of the film. Eggers has created a masterpiece that will continue to inspire future generations,' Darko J agreed. Ronald M commented: 'A horror movie that focuses more on psychological and atmospheric creepiness than gore and jump scares. A very enjoyable reimagining of the almost-lost classic and a welcome deviation from the usual Dracula story. The gradual introduction of Count Orlok. The attention shifted between characters. It's captivating. Darkness at its finest. A masterpiece.' However, unpacking his experience on set, Nicholas – who played Thomas Hutter – revealed that the scares weren't just saved for the screen, as he had a terrifying moment on set with his animal co-stars. In a recent interview with Empire magazine, he was questioned on whether he was 'actually freaked out' during filming, and recalled the 'rules' he was given when meeting the Czech Shepherds playing the 'wolves'. 'They were Czech Shepherds, so they weren't wolves but part-wolf. When we met them with the animal handlers, they were like, 'Oh, they're just like dogs,'' he said. 'When we got to set, there was a moment before that scene where I'm running on the spot, trying to get my heart rate up. 'The wolves – it sent them crazy. They'd been told to chase me and then they saw me getting myself fired up, and they were barking, being held back on these leashes. I was like, 'Whoa! Whoooooaaa.' 'And there was one time doing that shot where I was running – they'd be like, 'Okay, three-two-one, action,' and I would go on three, and [the wolves] would be released on one – and there was one time where I slipped, trying to get out of the window. More Trending 'I was like, 'Well, I know these wolves have been released, and I know they're chasing me, but I never asked, like… 'What are they trained to do if they do get to me? Directed by Robert Eggers, Nosferatu opened on Dec. 25, 2024. The official logline for the movie reads, 'A gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman and the terrifying vampire infatuated with her, causing untold horror in its wake.' Skarsgård stars as the vampire Count Orlok in Nosferatu, while Depp plays Ellen Hutter, whom the vampire has been haunting in her dreams. Hoult plays Ellen's husband, Thomas Hutter, a real estate agent who is trying to thwart Orlok from preying on his wife. The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Simon McBurney, Ralph Ineson and Willem Dafoe. Prime Video has announced that Nosferatu will join its streaming video on demand lineup on Friday, June 27. Viewers who don't have Prime Video can get the streaming service as one of the benefits of being an Amazon Prime subscriber for $14.99 or $139 per year. Prime Video-only subscriptions are also available for $8.99 per month. According to streaming tracker When to Stream, only the theatrical version of Nosferatu will be available on Prime Video when the film makes its SVOD debut on the platform on Friday. The extended cut of Nosferatu, which includes four minutes of additional footage is only available on the Peacock streaming service. Robert Eggers Contacted Bill Skarsgård About 'Nosferatu' After Seeing Him In 'IT: Chapter Two' Nosferatu director Robert Eggers said it was because of another horror role — Pennywise the Clown— that led him to pursue Bill Skarsgård to play Count Orlok. However, it wasn't Skarsgård's portrayal as the clown that inspired Eggers. 'It was [Bill's role] as Pennywise, but in IT: Chapter Two, when he played Pennywise as a middle-aged human man instead of a clown,' Eggers said in a Zoom conversation prior to the film's theatrical release. 'It just had a kind of darkness and depth that I really believed. 'So, that's when I emailed or texted Bill and said, 'Let's talk about Orlok.' I really wanted to work with Bill since I met him almost 10 years ago,' the filmmaker added. 'I cast him in The Northman in a supporting role but because of COVID, it didn't happen. He was always on my mind.' Nosferatu received awards season recognition for films released in 2024, largely in the technical categories. The film earned nominations for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design for the 97th Academy Awards; and received nominations in the same four categories and a Best Original Score nomination from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards. Nosferatu begins streaming on Prime Video on Friday.
