At First, Kapo ‘Didn't Dare' to Release Afrobeat Music, But Then He Leaned Into ‘What Truly Made Me Feel Most Unique'

When Kapo released 'Ohnana' in summer 2024, his only expectation was to 'create music for a niche.' He didn't hope for much, other than to have a certain number of loyal fans and play shows across a few cities in Colombia. 'My vision was that, but when the song came out, it entered the commercial side in an incredible way,' he tells Billboard. 'That's why I wanted to give my new album a sensible name like 'in case anyone is listening to us.'' On July 3, Kapo (real name: Juan David Loaiza Sepúlveda) will release his sophomore studio album Por Si Alguien Nos Escucha, home to 'Ohnana' and its follow-up hit 'UWAIE,' which entered the Hot Latin Songs, Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. last year. The 15-track set — all composed of the Afrobeat, dancehall, reggae sounds and feel-good lyrics that made Kapo a household name — is a contrast to his debut album Tu OG Favorito (2023) that is more reggaeton-heavy. 'For a long time, I'd been doing Afrobeat, but I didn't dare,' the Colombian artist explains. 'I had a lot of ideas and colors stored away. On the first album, I explored what I thought might work. … However, the songs that always worked for me were the ones that were very special, like 'Pelinegra.' The most personal songs are the ones that work for me. I began giving my music more meaning and to what truly made me feel most unique. This [new] album is a step forward, but more than that, it's accepting and having the certainty that with my sounds I could achieve great things.' Por Si Alguien Nos Escucha includes notable collaborations with Myke Towers, Yandel, Manuel Turizo, Ryan Castro, Rels B, Lion Fiah and Feid on the focus track 'X Ti.' 'I feel like it's a song that, besides being a great track, is a collaboration we've been working on for a long time,' he shares. 'Feid is very passionate about music and has been giving us good vibes for a while. I told him a long time ago that I wanted to record a song with him. After 'Ohnana,' we managed to connect and get closer. He went into the studio and we created it. It's a song that I feel will give a twist to what's happening to me, and it's one of those dream collaborations.' Kapo is confirmed for the 2025 Billboard Latin Music Week taking place from Oct. 20 to 24, 2025 at the historic Fillmore Miami Beach. Spanning over 30 years, and recognized as the most influential week in Latin music, the event will once again celebrate the heartbeat of Latin music and culture with four days of panels, marquee conversations, roundtables, showcases, networking and activations. 'I really enjoy these spaces to meet with my colleagues, share cultures, experiences, and what's happening to us. To talk about music and what we like. We're going to enjoy that week, it's going to be really cool,' he expresses. Tickets are on sale now at The full schedule and lineup will be revealed in the coming weeks. Lorde Says MDMA Therapy ‘Changed the Game' on Her Stage Fright

Lorde is opening up about how MDMA therapy helped her overcome debilitating stage fright, crediting the treatment with changing her relationship with live performance entirely. During an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the pop star candidly discussed how she once suffered from 'truly the most horrific stage fright' that dated back to her early childhood in community theatre. When Colbert asked how she got past it, Lorde didn't hold back. 'Well, it's MDMA therapy,' she said. 'Truly, like, changed the game on my stage fright.' 'Some of these things live very deep in the body, and you hold on to it,' she said. 'You hold on to a response like stage fright for reasons that no amount of talk therapy or brain use could get at. But when you bypass that and get to the body, something shifts. And that totally happened for me.' After trying 'everything' for her anxiety around performing, Lorde said she woke up the day after her MDMA therapy and instantly felt the shift: 'I was like, oh, it's over. I know it's over.' The revelation comes as Lorde gears up for the release of her new album Virgin, out June 27 via Republic Records. She recently dropped the final pre-release single 'Hammer' on June 20. The euphoric track, co-produced by Jim-E Stack, opens the album and has drawn comparisons to Lady Gaga's 'Poker Face' for its glitchy, electro-pop flair. Lorde described 'Hammer' as 'an ode to city life and horniness tbh' and has promised that Virgin will explore themes of rebirth, gender, spiritual transformation, and bodily autonomy. The album also includes production from Fabiana Palladino, Dan Nigro, Buddy Ross and Dev Hynes of Blood Orange, among others. She's been open about how her recent life changes influenced the record, from quitting birth control and experiencing disordered eating to ending a long-term relationship. The project's rawness is reflected in its visual aesthetic as well: 'The colour of the album is clear,' she wrote when announcing it. 'Like bathwater, windows, ice, spit. Full transparency.' Virgin is out Friday, June 27, with a Renell Medrano-directed video for 'Hammer' arriving the same day. Father's Day 2025: 16 Tender Moments of Latin Artists as Dads

For many artists, there is something even more powerful than filling stadiums, pulling all-nighters in recording studios, topping charts, or receiving awards: being a father. More from Billboard Natti Natasha Reveals She's Pregnant with Second Baby in Adorable Video Inside Manuel Turizo's 201 World Tour: 'We're Going to Create Chaos' Pitbull Responds to Viral Trend of Fans Dressing Up as Him at U.K. Shows: 'Priceless' On Father's Day 2025, celebrated this Sunday (June 15), we recognize not the touring singer or the hitmaker, but the man behind the microphone. He who lovingly combs his daughter's hair, is excited to know that he will be a father for the first time, shares the stage with his children, or even, inspired by them, completely changes his musical identity. Recently, social media, stages, and backstage have been filled with moments that melt hearts by showing the most human side of artists — from Maluma walking on the beach with his daughter Paris, to Mike Bahía wakesurfing with his little Kai, to Alexander Sánchez — son of Alejandro Sanz — declaring with tenderness that 'he is the best dad in the world' during a Q&A at Billboard Latin Music Week last October and more. We have rounded up 16 memorable scenes, all captured on photos and videos, that show the more family-friendly side of Latin music idols. Moments that remind us that being a father is also an art and, for many of them, the most important act of all. Find out which artist played on one of their daughter's most important days (her wedding), who got their son to record a TikTok dance routine with them and which kid stopped imitating his dad on a toy guitar to finally join his real band. Maluma takes a break from his concerts to enjoy the beach with his daughter Paris. Mau Montaner, from the brother duo Mau and Ricky, shares a musical moment with his son Apolo in which both play the electric guitar while looking at each other and enjoying the live sound in what appears to be a band rehearsal.
